What gets in the way in P6

By P6 most children have seen almost every topic. The problems are about time, papers and the last new topics.

Ratio and algebra questions in Maths are new in P6 and are combined with older topics in long questions.

Science open-ended answers lose marks for missing key words, even when the idea is right.

English compositions run out of time under exam conditions.

The Mother Tongue oral in August arrives before written revision has started.

Four subjects of revision compete for the same evenings, and the weakest paper gets the least time.

A plan built around the PSLE dates and the weakest paper uses the year better than more hours spread evenly.

What P6 tuition can cover

In P6 tuition moves from teaching topics to preparing for papers. A tutor balances the remaining new content against timed practice.

Maths: the last new topics and timed papers

The P6 Standard content in the 2021 MOE syllabus, then mixed questions across P3 to P6.

Topics covered
  • Ratio
  • Algebra with letters for unknowns
  • Percentage and dividing fractions
  • Area and circumference of a circle
  • Average of a set of data
  • Timed Paper 1 and Paper 2 practice

Science: open-ended answers

The written paper rewards precise explanations, so practice centres on answering in the way it is marked.

Topics covered
  • Key words for each theme
  • Cause and effect in full sentences
  • Experiment questions on fair tests
  • Graph and table questions
  • Timed practice on school prelim papers

English: writing, comprehension and oral

Two written papers, a listening paper and an oral, each needing its own practice.

Topics covered
  • Timed composition practice
  • Comprehension and editing
  • Oral reading and conversation
  • Listening comprehension practice
  • Reviewing marked scripts

Mother Tongue and Higher Mother Tongue

The oral comes first in August, then listening and the written papers in September.

Topics covered
  • Oral practice ahead of August
  • Listening comprehension
  • Composition under time
  • Comprehension and language use

The PSLE timetable, using 2026 as the guide

SEAB had not published the 2027 PSLE timetable on 25 Oct 2026. This is the 2026 timetable for the Standard papers, which shows the shape of the exam period.

Foundation papers ran on the same days, most of them shorter. The 2027 school terms put Term 3 from 28 Jun to 3 Sep and Term 4 from 13 Sep to 19 Nov, so if 2027 follows the same pattern, the written papers would fall early in Term 4.

Before you book a P6 tutor

What families ask in the PSLE year, when every month counts.

QuestionFor Primary 6
Which tutor suits P6?A tutor who has taught P6 recently and marks practice papers to the PSLE format. A full-time tutor or an ex-MOE teacher suits a child far from the AL you are aiming for. A strong undergraduate tutor suits a child who mainly needs timed practice. Profiles show qualifications, experience and levels taught.
What does it cost? Each P6 subject is charged at Upper Primary rates: S$30 to S$40 an hour with an undergraduate tutor, S$40 to S$55 with a full-time tutor and S$60 to S$80 with an ex-MOE teacher. Two subjects a week at 2 hours each with a full-time tutor come to S$640 to S$880 for eight lessons over four weeks.
How does it start?Tell us the school, each subject's level, the latest marks and the AL your child is aiming for. We send 2 to 4 tutor profiles within 16 hours. The first lesson is a paid trial at the tutor's hourly rate.
What are the terms? No contract and no minimum number of lessons, so lessons can end with the last PSLE paper. Cancel or move a lesson at least 24 hours ahead, or it is charged. If the fit is wrong, we re-match you free.

Primary 6 Tuition: a guide for parents

Primary 6 is the PSLE year. Your child sits four subjects, English, Mother Tongue, Maths and Science, at Standard or Foundation level in the combination the school recommends after P5, and some also sit Higher Mother Tongue. Each subject gets an Achievement Level from AL1 to AL8, and the four are added into a PSLE Score from 4 to 32. In Maths, the last new topics arrive in P6: ratio, algebra, area and circumference of circles, average, and harder percentage and fraction questions. Schools finish the syllabus and turn to revision, with the oral exams in August and the written papers in late September in 2026.

Read the full guide

Families often add a subject in P6, or a second weekly lesson in one subject, for the months before the papers. That makes the timetable the main thing to plan. Four subjects, school revision and a preliminary exam leave little free time, so lessons should be on the weakest papers, not spread evenly. A tutor who marks to the PSLE format helps most this year. Rates are in our Upper Primary band. SEAB had not published the 2027 PSLE timetable on 25 Oct 2026, so the 2026 dates below are a guide only. The subject pages and the PSLE preparation page go into each paper.

Here is how the PSLE Score shapes a P6 plan. Suppose a child's latest school results point to AL3 in English, AL6 in Maths, AL4 in Science and AL4 in Chinese, a score of 17. Moving Maths from AL6 to AL5 needs a jump from below 65% to 65% or more, and AL5 to AL4 needs 75%. Moving English from AL3 to AL2 needs 85%. For this child, the Maths paper has the most room, so a tutor puts most lesson time there: ratio and algebra first, then timed Paper 2 questions marked for method. Science gets a shorter weekly slot on key words. The score is a sum, so one point gained in any subject counts the same.

Primary 6 Tuition: frequently asked questions

Is it too late to start tuition in Primary 6?

No, but the plan has to be focused. A tutor starting in P6 first finds which papers and question types lose the most marks, then splits lesson time between those and timed practice. Starting early in the year gives room for both. Starting after June means working almost only on past-paper weaknesses.

How much does Primary 6 tuition cost?

Rates for P6 follow our Upper Primary band, at S$30 to S$40 an hour with an undergraduate tutor, S$40 to S$55 with a full-time tutor and S$60 to S$80 with an ex-MOE teacher. Four 2-hour lessons in one subject with an undergraduate tutor come to S$240 to S$320.

How many subjects should we get help with in P6?

Usually one or two. Every AL counts the same in the PSLE Score, so the subject with the most room to improve is often where extra time pays off most, whatever the subject. Three or four subjects a week leaves little time for school revision and rest. If you add a subject, set a clear end date, such as the last written paper.

When is the PSLE in 2027?

The 2027 dates were not yet out on SEAB's site when this page was written on 25 October 2026. In 2026 the oral exams were on 12 and 13 August, listening comprehension on 15 September and the written papers from 24 to 30 September. Check SEAB's PSLE page early in 2027 for the confirmed dates, and plan tuition around them.
