Where marks go in Primary 6 English
By P6 most children know the components. Marks are lost in timing, in planning, and in the oral, which comes weeks before the written papers.
The composition starts well, then runs out of time, so the ending is two lines and the word count barely passes 150.
The composition ignores the pictures, or uses one so loosely that the link to the topic is unclear.
In Paper 2, the open-ended comprehension at the end is rushed because too long was spent on the cloze passages.
In the oral conversation, answers are polite but short, and the examiner has to keep prompting.
1 more
In listening, the answer is chosen on the first reading, and the second reading is not used to check.
These are exam-year problems, and they respond to timed practice with honest marking and review of every mistake.

The PSLE English paper format (0001)
SEAB's format for Standard PSLE English Language, implemented from the 2025 exam and listed unchanged for 2026. Four papers, 200 marks in total.
Paper 2 carries almost half the weighting, and its open-ended comprehension comes last in the booklet. That is why timing the booklet section by section is part of every P6 plan.
| Paper | What is in it | Marks | Weighting | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 Writing | Situational writing (14 marks), then continuous writing of at least 150 words based on at least one of three pictures (36 marks) | 50 | 25% | 1 h 10 min |
| Paper 2 Booklet A | 25 multiple-choice questions: grammar (10), vocabulary (5), vocabulary cloze (5), visual text comprehension (5) | 25 | Part of Paper 2 | Part of 1 h 50 min |
| Paper 2 Booklet B | Grammar cloze (10), editing for spelling and grammar (10), comprehension cloze (15), synthesis and transformation (5 questions, 10 marks), comprehension open-ended (10 questions, 20 marks) | 65 | Paper 2 is 45% in all | 1 h 50 min for both booklets |
| Paper 3 Listening | 20 multiple-choice questions. The first seven use graphics, and each text is read twice | 20 | 10% | About 35 min |
| Paper 4 Oral | Reading aloud (15 marks) and a stimulus-based conversation on a photo (25 marks), not linked by theme | 40 | 20% | About 5 min preparation and about 5 min with the examiners |

How the English mark becomes an AL
MOE converts each Standard subject's percentage score into an Achievement Level. The four ALs are added to give the PSLE Score, from 4 to 32, where lower is stronger.
For Foundation English, grade A (75 to 100 percent) counts as AL6, grade B (30 to 74 percent) as AL7 and grade C (below 30 percent) as AL8.
| Achievement Level | Percentage score |
|---|---|
| AL1 | 90 and above |
| AL2 | 85 to 89 |
| AL3 | 80 to 84 |
| AL4 | 75 to 79 |
| AL5 | 65 to 74 |
| AL6 | 45 to 64 |
| AL7 | 20 to 44 |
| AL8 | Below 20 |

A PSLE English plan for 2027
SEAB had not published the 2027 PSLE timetable on 25 October 2026. In 2026 the English oral was on 12 and 13 August, listening on 15 September and Papers 1 and 2 on 24 September. This plan uses the 2027 school terms and assumes a similar pattern.
- Term 1: 5 Jan to 12 Mar 2027Find the weak papersA full diagnostic on recent work, then situational writing and the Paper 2 items that lose the most marks.
- Term 2: 22 Mar to 28 May 2027Oral and compositionWeekly reading aloud and photo conversations, plus one planned composition every week or two.
- June holidays: 29 May to 27 Jun 2027First timed papersTimed Paper 1 and Paper 2 practice, marked against the format, and listening practice with past-style texts.
- Term 3: 28 Jun to 3 Sep 2027Oral exam and prelimsOral practice peaks before the August oral dates. Schools also hold their own preliminary exams, so check your school calendar.
- September holidays: 4 to 12 Sep 2027Last written practiceShort timed sections of Paper 2 and one or two compositions, reviewed line by line.
- Term 4: 13 Sep to 19 Nov 2027Listening and written papersLight review of the errors that still repeat, until the last English paper on the dates SEAB publishes.

Before you book a P6 English tutor
What families ask in the PSLE year, when the oral comes first.
| Question | For Primary 6 |
|---|---|
| Which tutor suits P6? | A tutor who works from the current PSLE format, marks compositions in detail and has run oral practice before. An ex-MOE teacher or full-time tutor suits a child far from the target AL. Look for recent PSLE English experience on each profile. |
| What does it cost? | P6 English is in the Upper Primary band: S$30 to S$40 an hour with an undergraduate tutor, S$40 to S$55 with a full-time tutor and S$60 to S$80 with an ex-MOE teacher. Eight 1.5-hour English lessons with an ex-MOE teacher, twice a week for a month, come to S$720 to S$960. |
| How does it start? | Send a recent composition and the latest school paper, and tell us the AL your child is aiming for. We send 2 to 4 tutor profiles within 16 hours. The first lesson is a paid trial at the tutor's hourly rate. |
| Can we stop after the PSLE? | Yes. There is no contract and no minimum number of lessons, so lessons can end with the last paper. Cancel or move a lesson at least 24 hours ahead, or it is charged. If the fit is wrong, we re-match you free. |

Primary 6 English Tuition: a guide for parents
Primary 6 English is the PSLE year, and the English paper is spread across more of the year than any other subject. In 2026 the oral exam was on 12 and 13 August, listening comprehension on 15 September, and the two written papers on Thursday 24 September. The Standard paper (SEAB code 0001) is worth 200 marks: Paper 1 Writing 25 percent, Paper 2 Language Use and Comprehension 45 percent, Paper 3 Listening 10 percent and Paper 4 Oral 20 percent. The result becomes an Achievement Level from AL1 to AL8, which is added to the other three subjects to make the PSLE Score.
Read the full guide
A P6 English tutor plans the year backwards from those dates. Oral comes first, so reading aloud and the photo-based conversation need work in Terms 1 and 2. The written papers come last, so timed composition, situational writing and the Paper 2 booklet run through Term 3 and the September holidays. The tutor marks every practice piece the way the paper is marked, and shows your child which components lose the most marks. Lessons are 1-to-1, at home or online, and some families add a second weekly lesson before the orals or the written papers. We send 2 to 4 tutor profiles on WhatsApp within 16 hours, and you choose.
In the PSLE oral, the stimulus-based conversation starts from a photo, for example children planting vegetables in a school garden. The examiner may ask, Would you like to take part in an activity like this? Why? A typical short answer is, Yes, because it is fun. A tutor teaches a fuller pattern: give a clear view, a reason, and a personal example. Yes, I would, because growing food shows how much work goes into a meal.
Last year my grandmother let me help with her chilli plants, and I was proud when the first chilli appeared. The tutor then asks a follow-up your child did not expect, such as how schools could get more pupils involved, so your child practises thinking aloud instead of reciting.

Primary 6 English Tuition: frequently asked questions
What is the PSLE English paper format?
The Standard paper (SEAB code 0001) is worth 200 marks over four papers. Paper 1 Writing (1 h 10 min, 25%) has situational and continuous writing. Paper 2 Language Use and Comprehension (1 h 50 min, 45%) has 25 multiple-choice and 50 open-ended questions. Paper 3 Listening (about 35 min, 10%) has 20 multiple-choice questions. Paper 4 Oral (20%) has reading aloud and a conversation about a photo.
How does the continuous writing question work?
Your child writes a composition of at least 150 words on a given topic. Three pictures are provided, each offering a different angle on the topic, and the composition must be based on at least one of them. The picture does not have to be the whole story, but the link should be clear. A tutor practises choosing a picture quickly and planning around it.
When is the PSLE English oral?
In 2026 the English oral was on 12 and 13 August, well before the written papers on 24 September. SEAB had not published the 2027 timetable when we checked on 25 October 2026. Because the oral comes in Term 3, oral practice needs to start in Term 1 or 2 rather than after the school's preliminary exam.
How much does Primary 6 English tuition cost?
P6 is in our Upper Primary band: S$30 to S$40 an hour with an undergraduate tutor, S$40 to S$55 with a full-time tutor and S$60 to S$80 with an ex-MOE teacher. Some P6 families book two lessons a week before the oral or the written papers, then stop after the last paper.
How is Foundation English graded at PSLE?
Foundation English (SEAB code 0031) is a separate paper worth 100 marks. Results are graded A, B or C, and for the PSLE Score these count as AL6, AL7 and AL8. The papers are shorter, the composition needs at least 120 words based on a series of pictures, and the comprehension is at the literal and inferential levels. A tutor should work from Foundation materials.
