O-Level and SEC English Tuition

Most Secondary 3 and Secondary 4 students plateau at B3/B4 not because their English is weak in general, but because one or two components are leaking marks: situational writing where the format, purpose and audience are misjudged; continuous writing that is grammatically fine but underdeveloped; comprehension inference questions answered too literally; or the summary, where students lift phrases wholesale instead of paraphrasing to the point count. Our O-Level English tuition diagnoses which components are actually costing the grade and works on those, rather than treating English as one undifferentiated subject.

The 1184 exam is four papers: Paper 1 (Writing, including editing, situational writing and continuous writing), Paper 2 (Comprehension, including the visual text, comprehension passages and the summary), Paper 3 (Listening Comprehension) and Paper 4 (Oral, a Planned Response and Spoken Interaction). For many students a good place to start is Paper 1 situational writing, where marks for tone, register and format are entirely learnable, and Paper 2 summary, where a clear paraphrasing method can be taught.

Our tutors, who range from undergraduates to full-time and ex-MOE teachers, coach each component against the actual assessment criteria: they mark writing to the rubric, teach inference questions as evidence-plus-reasoning, and rehearse the oral for the fluency and development the rubric rewards. For Sec 3 students the programme builds the components in sequence; for Sec 4 students it is a component-by-component audit followed by marked practice under exam conditions.

On rates and scheduling: O-Level English home-tuition rates in Singapore typically run S$45 to S$95 an hour for upper-secondary, with ex-MOE teachers at the upper end. Parents pay only the hourly rate shown on their tutor shortlist. We re-match free if the fit is wrong.

English benefits from marked homework between lessons, students submit a piece of writing or a comprehension set, the tutor marks it to the rubric, and the next lesson works through the feedback, which is why we suggest weekly 90-minute sessions plus marked practice over longer, less frequent lessons. For Sec 4 students in the run-up to the prelims and the national written papers (held in September for the SEC from 2027), tutors prioritise situational writing, summary and the oral, the components with the most learnable marks.

A note on the 2027 transition: the October and November 2026 sitting is the final GCE O-Level. From 2027, Sec 4 students sit the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC), where English Language is taken at G3 under syllabus code K300, in place of 1184. MOE treats an O-Level grade as equivalent to G3, so this page applies to both the last O-Level cohort and the first SEC cohorts. Under the SEC timetable the English written papers are held in September, earlier than the other subjects.

From the 2028 Post-Secondary Admissions Exercise (PSE), which replaces the JAE for SEC students, English is the L1 in the L1R4 aggregate and needs A1 to C6 for Junior College. Our tutors teach to the syllabus your child will actually sit.
