I’ve tried other tuition agencies before, but TSS is definitely the one I’d recommend. The service is much better.

Where Literature marks are lost

The SEAB band descriptors describe weaker answers in plain terms. These are the patterns tutors see most in upper secondary Literature.

The answer retells the story. The descriptors place answers that are largely narrative in the lower bands, however accurate the plot summary.

Quotations are dropped in without comment, so the evidence never connects to the point being argued.

The question is answered in general terms instead of its own terms, which caps the band before the essay is half written.

The unseen poem is paraphrased line by line, with little about the effect of its language, form or structure.

1 more

Passage-based answers drift away from the extract into the rest of the text, or ignore how the passage works on its own.

Each of these improves with timed practice on real question types and feedback marked against the band descriptors.

The Literature course, as a tutor teaches it

The SEAB syllabus names five assessment objectives, from close analysis of the texts to a sensitive and informed personal response. A tutor works through the set texts your child's school chose and builds the skills alongside them.

Prose set text

One novel or collection from the prescribed list, answered in Paper 1 Section A.

Topics covered
  • Plot, character and the text's main concerns
  • Passage-based questions on an extract
  • Essay questions on the whole text
  • Choosing short, precise quotations
  • Singapore texts, one or two set every year

Unseen poetry

No set texts. A choice of two unseen poems, one question on each, in Paper 1 Section B.

Topics covered
  • Reading a poem for its subject and tone
  • Imagery, diction and sound
  • Form, structure and line breaks
  • A personal response backed by the words on the page
  • One question set on a Singapore text each year

Drama set text

One play studied for Paper 2, with one compulsory passage-based question and one essay.

Topics covered
  • Dramatic structure and stagecraft
  • Character and conflict through dialogue
  • Dramatic irony and tension
  • Writing about a scene as performance
  • Linking the extract to the whole play

Writing the answer

What the band descriptors reward in every question, whatever the text.

Topics covered
  • Close attention to the terms of the question
  • A consistent viewpoint held through the essay
  • Judicious selection of textual evidence
  • How the writer's choices shape meaning
  • Clear, organised and coherent expression

For every year of examination, one or two Singapore texts are set in each set text section, and one unseen poetry question is set on a Singapore text. Schools may not choose screenplays or abridged versions of the texts.

Literature Tuition: a guide for parents

Literature in English in upper secondary comes in two forms. Pure Literature is a full subject, examined in 2026 as O-Level 2065 and from 2027 as SEC G3 Literature in English K331 or G2 K228. The Literature elective sits inside Combined Humanities, paired with Social Studies, examined in 2026 as O-Level 2262 and from 2027 as SEC G3 K337 or G2 K231. SEAB says the 2027 graduating cohort is the first to sit the SEC, so a Sec 4 student in 2026 still takes the O-Level. MOE lets students in Full SBB schools take Literature in English at a more demanding level from Secondary Two.

Read the full guide

Pure Literature is two papers. Paper 1 has a prose set text and an unseen poem, Paper 2 a drama set text, and every question is marked out of 25 against band descriptors. A Literature tutor reads the set texts closely with your child, then teaches the skills the descriptors reward: answering the terms of the question, choosing textual evidence that proves a point, explaining how the writer's choices of form, structure and language shape meaning, and keeping an argument instead of retelling the plot. Unseen poetry is practised often, because no amount of revision covers a poem nobody has seen. Lessons are 1-to-1 at home or online.

Take an essay question of the kind the syllabus sets on a play: 'How does the writer make this scene so dramatic?' Many students retell the scene in order, adding a quotation now and then. The descriptors call that largely narrative, so it sits in the lower bands. A tutor teaches a different shape. Each paragraph opens with a claim about the drama, such as rising tension between two characters.

It then quotes a few words, names what the writer does with them, perhaps a short reply that cuts off a speech, and explains the effect on an audience. The conclusion answers the question in its own words. The top band asks for close attention to the terms of the question and judicious selection of textual evidence, so this shape is what the marker looks for.

Literature Tuition: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Pure Literature and Combined Humanities Literature?

Pure Literature is a full subject with two papers: Prose and Unseen Poetry, then Drama. The Literature elective is one paper inside Combined Humanities, alongside a Social Studies paper. In the 2027 G3 Humanities (Social Studies, Literature in English) syllabus K337, the Literature paper is 1 hour 40 minutes and 50 marks, with a prose set text and an unseen poem but no drama. The school decides which your child takes.

Does the SEC change Literature in English?

The code changes, from 2065 in 2026 to K331 for G3 in 2027. Both syllabuses print the same two papers, the same timings and the same band descriptors. The 2027 prescribed list is shorter, with five prose texts and four plays. G2 Literature K228 keeps the same paper structure.

How are Literature answers marked?

Each question is marked out of 25 against band descriptors, one set for set text questions and one for unseen questions. The top band asks for close attention to the terms of the question, sound understanding with some insight into the text's main concerns, a consistent viewpoint backed by judicious textual evidence, and clear, organised writing. Answers that are largely narrative sit in the lower bands.

Is there Literature after Sec 4?

Yes. SEAB's 2027 A-Level list has H1 Literature in English 8841, H2 9539 and H3 9805. H1 is one 3-hour paper with an unseen poem, a prose text and a drama text. H2 adds an elective paper on either the English Romantic Period or Postcolonial Literature. At both levels, answers are typed in a digital answer booklet. JC Literature is in our JC rate band: S$45 to S$60 an hour with an undergraduate tutor, S$65 to S$90 with a full-time tutor and S$90 to S$130 with an ex-MOE teacher.

How much does Literature tuition cost?

Literature in Sec 3 and Sec 4 is in our Upper Secondary band. Typical hourly rates are S$35 to S$45 for an undergraduate tutor, S$45 to S$65 for a full-time tutor and S$65 to S$95 for an ex-MOE teacher. Many families book one 1.5-hour lesson a week, at home or online.
