Where secondary Geography marks are lost

Geography looks like a content subject, but much of the paper tests skills and judgement. These are the patterns tutors see most in upper secondary.

Answers describe a graph or map in general terms instead of quoting figures or features from it.

Explain questions get a list of factors with no link from each cause to the effect asked about.

The 9-mark question argues only one side, so it cannot reach the top level, which needs both sides and a reasoned evaluation.

Fieldwork questions on sampling, questionnaires or the reliability of findings are guessed at, because the method was never revised.

1 more

Map work slips on compass direction, scale or latitude and longitude, which are easy marks to lose.

Each of these improves with practice on real exam questions and careful feedback on how they are marked.

The G3 Geography clusters, as a tutor teaches them

The SEAB syllabus groups topics into clusters of three. Pure Geography covers all five, and the Humanities elective covers Clusters 1 and 2 plus either Climate or Tectonics. The tutor follows the order your child's school uses.

Geography in Everyday Life

Geographical concepts and methods learned in familiar places, then used in every other cluster.

Topics covered
  • Thinking geographically about places and landscapes
  • Sustainable development
  • Research questions and measurable hypotheses
  • Sampling methods, from convenience to stratified random sampling
  • Closed-ended questionnaires, rating scales and mental maps
  • Reliability of data and validity of findings

Tourism and Singapore

Human geography: why tourism grows and what it changes. The Singapore cluster is in Pure Geography only.

Topics covered
  • Tourism activity and tourism development
  • Sustainable tourism development
  • Singapore as a small island city-state
  • Opportunities and challenges for Singapore
  • A sustainable and resilient Singapore

Climate

Weather and climate, why temperature and rainfall vary, and how people respond to a changing climate.

Topics covered
  • Weather variables and climate types
  • Why air temperature varies: rotation, revolution, latitude and altitude
  • The water cycle and relative humidity
  • Climatic hazards such as heat waves, droughts and floods
  • Climate change and climate action

Tectonics

Physical geography: how plates move, what happens at their boundaries, and how communities manage disaster risk.

Topics covered
  • Earth's internal structure and plate tectonic theory
  • Convection currents and slab-pull
  • Evidence from seafloor spreading and magnetic striping
  • Divergent and convergent plate boundaries
  • Earthquakes, volcanoes and disaster risk management

Geography paper formats for 2026 and 2027

These are the formats printed in the SEAB syllabuses. G3 Pure Geography and the G3 Humanities elective are the same in 2026 (O-Level) and 2027 (SEC), and an approved calculator may be used.

In each G3 paper one 9-mark question is marked on level descriptors and the rest are point-marked. The fieldwork question may be set in a context outside the syllabus clusters, so the method has to be understood, not memorised for one study.

PaperFormat
G3 Pure Geography, Paper 1 (2279 or K329)1 h 45 min, 50 marks, 50%. Three compulsory structured questions: a 20-mark fieldwork question on Geographical Methods, Tourism for 15 marks and Climate for 15 marks
G3 Pure Geography, Paper 2 (2279 or K329)1 h 45 min, 50 marks, 50%. Three compulsory structured questions: Geography in Everyday Life for 15 marks, Tectonics for 15 marks and Singapore for 20 marks
G3 Humanities, Geography elective (2260 or K335)1 h 45 min, 50 marks, 50% of Humanities. Section A: Geography in Everyday Life for 14 marks and Tourism for 18 marks. Section B: Climate or Tectonics for 18 marks
G3 Humanities, Social Studies (2260 or K335)1 h 45 min, 50 marks, 50% of Humanities. A 35-mark source-based case study and 15 marks of structured-response questions
G2 Pure Geography from 2027 (K226)Two papers of 1 h 45 min and 50 marks. Each has two 25-mark structured questions, with a 6-mark level-marked question in Paper 2

Geography Tuition: a guide for parents

Secondary Geography in Singapore comes in two forms. Pure Geography is a full subject, examined in 2026 as O-Level 2279 and from 2027 as SEC G3 Geography K329 or G2 Geography K226. The Geography elective sits inside Combined Humanities, paired with Social Studies, examined in 2026 as O-Level 2260 and from 2027 as SEC G3 K335 or G2 K229. SEAB says the 2027 graduating cohort is the first to sit the SEC, so a Sec 4 student in 2026 still takes the O-Level, and anyone now in Sec 3 sits the SEC. Under Full Subject-Based Banding, MOE lets students take Humanities subjects, including Geography, at a more demanding level from Sec 2.

Read the full guide

Both courses are built on the same clusters. G3 Pure Geography has five: Geography in Everyday Life, Tourism, Climate, Tectonics and Singapore, plus a 10-week extended fieldwork study. The G3 elective takes Geography in Everyday Life and Tourism, then either Climate or Tectonics, with shorter fieldwork. A Geography tutor teaches the content cluster by cluster, then the skills the papers reward: reading maps and graphs, writing explanations that link cause to effect, and building the 9-mark answers that are marked on levels. Fieldwork questions are practised too, because Paper 1 opens with one in Pure Geography. Lessons are 1-to-1 at home or online.

Take a 9-mark question of the kind the syllabus describes: 'Tourism development brings more benefits than problems to a local community. How far do you agree?' Many students write three benefits, such as jobs and better roads, and stop. That is one side, so it cannot reach Level 3. A tutor teaches a fixed shape. First, two benefits, each explained and tied to a named place. Next, two problems, such as rising prices or damage to the environment, explained the same way.

Then a judgement that weighs them, for example that benefits outweigh problems only where the community has a say in planning. The level descriptors ask for both sides, good elaboration, examples and an evaluation that follows from the arguments, so this shape is what the marker looks for.

Geography Tuition: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Pure Geography and Combined Humanities Geography?

Pure Geography is a full subject with two papers and five clusters, including Tectonics and Singapore, plus a 10-week extended fieldwork study. The Geography elective is one paper inside Combined Humanities, alongside a Social Studies paper. It covers Geography in Everyday Life and Tourism, then either Climate or Tectonics, with shorter bite-sized fieldwork. The school decides which your child takes.

Does the SEC change Geography?

The codes change. SEAB lists G3 Geography K329 for 2027 against 2279 for 2026, and G3 Humanities (Social Studies, Geography) K335 against 2260. The 2026 and 2027 G3 syllabuses print the same clusters and the same paper format. G2 Geography K226 has its own format, with two longer structured questions in each paper and a 6-mark level-marked question.

How are the 9-mark Geography questions marked?

They are marked on three levels. Level 3, worth 7 to 9 marks, needs arguments for both sides with good elaboration, examples that show a full understanding, and an evaluation that follows from weighing the arguments. A one-sided answer, however well argued, sits lower. A tutor practises the structure until your child writes both sides and a judgement by habit.

Is there Geography after Sec 4?

Yes. At JC, SEAB's 2027 A-Level syllabuses include H1 Geography 8834, H2 Geography 9173 and H3 Geography 9822. IB Diploma students can take Geography at SL or HL, a course IBO says integrates physical and human geography. JC Geography is in our JC rate band: S$45 to S$60 an hour with an undergraduate tutor, S$65 to S$90 with a full-time tutor and S$90 to S$130 with an ex-MOE teacher.

How much does Geography tuition cost?

Sec 3 and Sec 4 Geography is in our Upper Secondary band. Typical hourly rates are S$35 to S$45 for an undergraduate tutor, S$45 to S$65 for a full-time tutor and S$65 to S$95 for an ex-MOE teacher. Many families book one 1.5-hour lesson a week, at home or online.
