JC H2 Physics (9749) is the prerequisite for Engineering, Computer Science (computational track), and most physical-science university courses at NUS, NTU and SMU. The format is four papers. Paper 1 is multiple-choice (30 marks). Paper 2 is structured questions (80 marks). Paper 3 is Free Response (80 marks). Paper 4 is the practical assessment (55 marks). The 9749 syllabus covers measurement, kinematics, dynamics, forces, work-energy-power, motion in a circle, gravitational field, oscillations, waves and superposition, electric fields, current of electricity, DC circuits, electromagnetism, electromagnetic induction, alternating currents, quantum physics and nuclear physics. The dominant grade-determining sections are the multi-step Free Response questions and the practical assessment.
Our H2 Physics tutors run a structured JC1 to JC2 programme. The JC1 syllabus covers mechanics (kinematics, dynamics, forces, energy, circular motion, gravitation), oscillations and waves. The JC2 syllabus then layers electricity, magnetism, electromagnetic induction, alternating currents and quantum and nuclear physics. Tutors are NUS, NTU graduates with strong Physics or Engineering majors, ex-MOE JC Physics teachers, or PhD holders in physics-related fields.
The simple harmonic motion topic is a useful diagnostic for whether a student has mastered the calculus-and-physics integration that 9749 expects. The question typically asks the student to derive the SHM equation from F equals minus k x, then solve the second-order differential equation, then interpret the energy graph. Students who learned SHM by formula memorisation freeze at the derivation. Students who understand the calculus origin (Newton second law applied to a restoring force, separation of variables, sinusoidal solution) flow through.
Our tutors restart SHM from the calculus derivation in JC1 Term 3, then drill 15 to 20 application questions across the JC2 year. The same approach applies to electromagnetic induction (Faraday and Lenz law) and to circular motion (centripetal acceleration as the second derivative of position around a circle). Concept-first teaching at this level is what separates a JC2 H2 Physics A from a B.
Common JC H2 Physics Struggles We Fix
H2 Physics marks at the A and B bands are decided on Free Response application questions and practical interpretation. The patterns we see most often:
Cannot identify which physical principle applies to an unfamiliar problem because principles were memorised without conceptual grounding.
Multi-step Free Response questions involving conservation laws are skipped because the student cannot break the problem into stages.
Electromagnetic induction questions confuse Lenz law direction and Faraday equation application.
Quantum physics conceptual questions (photoelectric effect, wave-particle duality, energy levels) lose marks for vague vocabulary.
Practical assessment uncertainty estimation and graphical analysis lose 6 to 10 marks.
Calculus application in physics (especially in oscillations and circular motion) is confused.
These are the gaps our H2 Physics tutors fix with structured topical sequencing and weekly Free Response drilling.

What Our Parents Say
"Electromagnetic induction was confusing throughout JC2. The tutor walked me through Lenz law and Faraday equation with 15 worked examples. By prelims I was getting full marks on the EM induction questions. Final A-Level H2 Physics was A."
- Joel
JC2 student from Bishan
"I struggled with simple harmonic motion calculus throughout JC1. The tutor explained the calculus derivation and from there oscillations questions clicked. Final A-Level was B, which got me into NTU Engineering."
