Where POA students go wrong

POA errors tend to repeat, because one misunderstanding in Sec 3 carries into every later topic. These are the ones tutors fix most often.

Classification errors: a prepaid expense recorded as an expense, or an improvement to a van treated as a repair instead of a capital cost.

Double entry goes in the wrong direction, such as crediting cash when cash is received, so the trial balance never agrees.

Financial statements are set out in the wrong order, or items such as drawings and accumulated depreciation land in the wrong statement.

Depreciation by the reducing-balance method is worked on cost every year instead of on net book value.

Ratio questions stop at the calculation, without explaining what the change means for the business.

Each of these is a habit, and habits change with regular practice and line-by-line checking.

The POA syllabus, grouped for lessons

The 7087 and K342 syllabuses share three key understandings. A tutor teaches the recording system first, because every later topic depends on it, then follows your child's school order.

The recording system

How a transaction becomes figures in the ledger, and the theories that decide how it is recorded.

Topics covered
  • The accounting equation
  • The double-entry recording system
  • The accounting information system and the accounting cycle
  • Journals and ledger accounts
  • Accounting theories, including accrual, prudence, matching and consistency
  • Internal controls

Assets, liabilities and equity

The items that appear on the Statement of Financial Position, each with its own rules.

Topics covered
  • Cash in hand, cash at bank and bank reconciliation
  • Inventory, cost of sales and FIFO
  • Trade receivables and allowance for impairment
  • Non-current assets, capital and revenue expenditure
  • Depreciation by straight-line and reducing-balance methods
  • Trade payables, long-term borrowings, capital and drawings

Financial statements and correcting errors

Bringing it together for one financial year, the 20-mark question in Paper 2.

Topics covered
  • Statement of Financial Performance
  • Statement of Financial Position
  • Sole proprietorships and private limited companies
  • Income received in advance, prepaid expenses and expenses payable
  • Correcting errors not revealed by the trial balance
  • Adjusted profit after correction of errors

Analysis and decisions

Using accounting and non-accounting information to judge a business and choose between options.

Topics covered
  • Gross profit margin, mark-up and profit margin
  • Current ratio and quick ratio
  • Inventory turnover and trade receivables turnover
  • Comparing up to three years, or against one other business
  • Forms of business: sole proprietorship, limited liability partnership and private limited company
  • The scenario-based decision question

The POA exam papers

Both papers are compulsory, answers are written on the question paper, and an approved calculator is allowed. This format is the same in O-Level 7087 for 2026 and SEC G3 K342 for 2027.

Questions can cover at most three financial periods, and the financial statements question covers one financial year. Errors revealed by a trial balance are not required, only errors it does not reveal.

POA Tuition: a guide for parents

Principles of Accounts is an upper secondary elective that starts in Sec 3. In 2026 it is examined as O-Level 7087, which SEAB marks as its last year. From 2027 it becomes SEC G3 Principles of Accounts K342 or G2 K233, as the 2027 graduating cohort is the first to sit the SEC. The syllabus is built on three key understandings: accounting and non-accounting information support decisions, accounting is a language for business activity, and accounting is an information system with a double-entry recording system at its heart. Students learn to record transactions, prepare a Statement of Financial Position and a Statement of Financial Performance, and judge a business by its ratios.

Read the full guide

POA is unusual among secondary subjects because almost every mark depends on method and layout. A POA tutor drills the accounting equation and double entry until each transaction is classified without hesitation, then builds up to full financial statements for a sole proprietorship or a private limited company. Lessons cover the topics students find hardest: inventory with FIFO, depreciation by the straight-line and reducing-balance methods, allowance for impairment of trade receivables, bank reconciliation and correcting errors the trial balance does not reveal. The tutor also teaches the scenario-based question, where your child chooses between two options and gives three reasons. Lessons are 1-to-1 at home or online.

A classification error of the kind POA papers test: a trader pays $3,000 to fit a new engine that increases a delivery van's capacity and extends its useful life, and $400 for its routine service. Both amounts are recorded as repairs expense. The syllabus says spending on a non-current asset after purchase is capitalised only if it increases capacity and useful life and improves function, so the $3,000 is capital expenditure and the $400 is revenue expenditure.

Before any depreciation, profit is understated by $3,000 and the van is understated by $3,000 on the Statement of Financial Position. The correcting journal entry debits the motor van account and credits repairs expense with $3,000. A tutor has your child classify first, write the double entry second, and state the effect on profit and on assets last.

POA Tuition: frequently asked questions

What changes in POA from O-Level to SEC?

The code changes from 7087 to K342 for G3 and K233 for G2. The 2026 O-Level and 2027 G3 syllabuses print the same two papers, with a 7-mark scenario-based question. In G2 POA, the scenario-based question is worth 5 marks. SEAB marks K233 as refined, which means syllabus content changes only. Your child's school will say which level they take.

What is the POA scenario-based question?

It sits inside one Paper 2 question. Your child chooses between two options for a fictional business, using both accounting and non-accounting information, and explains three reasons for the choice. The context is one of five topics: inventory, trade payables, trade receivables, non-current assets or business entities. Marks go to the decision and to reasons backed by evidence from the scenario.

Can my child start POA tuition without any accounting background?

Yes. POA is a Sec 3 elective, so nobody arrives with accounting knowledge. The accounting equation and double entry come first, and a student unsure of them finds every later topic harder. A tutor who starts there and practises many small transactions gives your child a base that every later topic depends on.

How much does POA tuition cost?

POA is in our Upper Secondary rate band. Hourly rates run S$35 to S$45 with an undergraduate tutor, S$45 to S$65 with a full-time tutor and S$65 to S$95 with an ex-MOE teacher. Most families book one lesson a week, and many keep lessons to 1.5 hours so there is time for a full financial statements question.
