Where Computing students get stuck

Computing mixes written theory with programming under time pressure. These are the problems tutors fix most often.

Reading code is fine but writing it from a blank cell is not, because the student has never broken a problem into small steps.

Programs run on the sample data but fail on boundary or invalid input, because no test cases were planned.

The syllabus asks for algorithms without built-in shortcuts, such as finding a maximum without max(), and students only know the shortcut.

Number conversions, two's complement and Boolean simplification with De Morgan's theorem lose easy marks in Paper 1.

1 more

Spreadsheet formulas break when copied, because relative, absolute and mixed cell references were never understood.

Each of these improves with regular hands-on practice and a tutor who reads the code line by line with your child.

The five Computing modules, as a tutor teaches them

The 7155 and K349 syllabuses share five modules. Paper 2 tests Algorithms and Programming and Spreadsheets on a computer, and Paper 1 tests all five in writing.

  • Processor, main memory, secondary storage, data and address buses
  • Binary, denary and hexadecimal conversions
  • Two's complement for negative whole numbers
  • Logic gates and truth tables, up to 3 inputs
  • Boolean statements and De Morgan's theorem

Algorithms and Programming

Python, from variables to functions, tested in both papers.

Topics covered
  • Strings, lists and dictionaries
  • Selection and iteration with if, for and while
  • User-defined functions, local and global variables
  • File input and output
  • Trace tables, test cases and data validation

One Paper 2 question, on a spreadsheet, plus written questions in Paper 1.

Topics covered
  • Relative, absolute and mixed cell references
  • Goal Seek and Conditional Formatting
  • Logical functions: IF, AND, OR, NOT
  • Lookup functions: VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP, INDEX, MATCH
  • Statistical functions such as COUNTIF and AVERAGEIF

Networking and Impact of Computing

How data moves between computers, and the laws and ethics around it, tested in Paper 1.

Topics covered
  • LANs, switches, routers and wireless access points
  • MAC, IPv4 and IPv6 addresses
  • Anti-malware, firewalls and encryption
  • The PDPA and POFMA
  • Intellectual property, copyright and software licences

Before you book a Computing tutor

What parents ask before the first Computing lesson.

QuestionFor Computing
Which tutor suits Computing?Choose a tutor who writes Python fluently, knows the syllabus limits on built-in functions and sets lab-style tasks on a computer. Say whether your child takes G3 or G2, since G2 uses block-based programming. Each profile lists the tutor's qualifications, experience and the subjects taught.
What does it cost?Computing in Sec 3 and Sec 4 is in the Upper Secondary band: S$35 to S$45 an hour with an undergraduate tutor, S$45 to S$65 with a full-time tutor and S$65 to S$95 with an ex-MOE teacher. A month of weekly 1.5-hour lessons with a full-time tutor comes to S$270 to S$390.
How does it start?Tell us the school, the level, G2 or G3, and the topic causing trouble. We send 3 to 12 tutor profiles within 16 hours. The first lesson is a paid trial at the tutor's hourly rate.
What are the terms? No contract and no minimum, so lessons can share the week with other subjects and step up before the exams. Cancel or move a lesson at least 24 hours ahead, or it is charged. If the fit is wrong, we re-match you free.

Computing Tuition: a guide for parents

Computing is an upper secondary subject, examined in 2026 as O-Level 7155 and from 2027 as SEC G3 Computing K349, as SEAB says the 2027 graduating cohort is the first to sit the SEC. The 7155 and K349 syllabuses print the same two papers and five modules: Computing Fundamentals, Algorithms and Programming, Spreadsheets, Networking and Impact of Computing. G2 Computing K237 is a new and different course from 2027. At JC, SEAB sets H2 Computing 9569 and no H1 or H3 paper.

Read the full guide

Paper 1 is a 2-hour written paper on all five modules. Paper 2 is a 2 hour 30 minute lab-based exam on a computer, with a spreadsheet, Python and JupyterLab, and the work is submitted as softcopy. A Computing tutor teaches the written topics students find abstract, such as binary, two's complement, logic gates and IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, and spends most of the time on Python: writing, testing and debugging programs until a new problem no longer stalls your child. Spreadsheet functions such as VLOOKUP, INDEX, MATCH and COUNTIF are practised on real tasks. Lessons are 1-to-1 at home or online.

Take a task of the kind the syllabus lists: find the largest value in a list of test scores without using max(). Many students write max(scores), which the task rules out, or start a loop with largest = 0 and get a wrong answer when every score is negative. A tutor teaches a fixed method. First, work three small lists by hand and write down the steps. Next, set largest to the first item, then loop through the rest and replace it whenever an item is bigger.

Then test normal data, a list of one item and a list of negative numbers, the normal, boundary and error conditions the syllabus names. The syllabus asks students to solve small instances by hand to find the general steps, so this method is what the marker looks for.

Computing Tuition: frequently asked questions

What changes in Computing from O-Level to SEC?

For G3, the code changes from 7155 to K349. The 2026 and 2027 syllabuses print the same papers, timings, marks and modules. G2 Computing K237 is new for 2027 and different: Paper 1 is a 1 hour 30 minute e-Examination for 70 marks, and Paper 2 is a 2 hour 15 minute lab-based paper with media software, spreadsheet and programming tasks, using Scratch or MakeCode blocks.

What is the Computing lab-based exam?

Paper 2 is taken on a computer with a spreadsheet, Python and JupyterLab. It has one question on spreadsheets and four to five questions on programming, all compulsory. A quick reference guide for Python is provided, and the work is submitted as softcopy, with saving time included in the 2 hours 30 minutes. It is worth 40% of the grade.

Can my child start Computing tuition with no coding experience?

Yes. The syllabus builds from variables and simple input and output, so no coding background is assumed. A tutor starts there, sets many small programs, and teaches the habits the syllabus lists, such as solving a small version of a problem first and testing as each part is added.

Is there Computing after Sec 4?

Yes. H2 Computing 9569 is two 3-hour papers: a written paper for 60% and a lab-based paper for 40%, in which candidates use Python, HTML, CSS, SQLite and the Flask web framework. Its six modules run from programming fundamentals and data structures to networks and emerging technologies. JC Computing is in our JC rate band: S$45 to S$60 an hour with an undergraduate tutor, S$65 to S$90 with a full-time tutor and S$90 to S$130 with an ex-MOE teacher.

How much does Computing tuition cost?

Computing in Sec 3 and Sec 4 is in our Upper Secondary band. Typical hourly rates are S$35 to S$45 for an undergraduate tutor, S$45 to S$65 for a full-time tutor and S$65 to S$95 for an ex-MOE teacher. Many families book one 1.5-hour lesson a week, at home or online.
