Why Sec 3 English feels harder
Sec 3 is the first time your child meets English papers built like the national exam. These difficulties are common in the first upper secondary year.
Writing runs out of ideas before the word range is reached, so the second half of the piece repeats the first.
The summary is written in the passage's own sentences, and points are lost to copying or to going over about 80 words.
Questions on the effect of a word or phrase get the literal meaning only, with nothing on what it suggests.
In the oral, the planned response to the video clip ends well before the 2 minutes allowed.
1 more
English homework gets less time as new subjects such as the sciences and humanities electives arrive.
Each of these improves with steady marked practice, and Sec 3 gives the time that Sec 4 does not.
Building the four SEC English papers in Sec 3
The 2027 SEC English syllabuses have four papers, the same as the O-Level. In Sec 3 the tutor builds each one in turn, at your child's G2 or G3 level, in the order your child's school teaches them.

Topics covered
- Planning a full piece in a few minutes
- Situational writing from a visual stimulus
- Choosing a continuous writing question you can sustain
- Narrative, discursive and argument pieces
- Editing a short passage for grammatical errors
Comprehension and summary
Reading a narrative and a non-narrative passage closely, then condensing ideas in your own words.

- Language for effect in a narrative passage
- Vocabulary in context
- Picking summary points from a non-narrative text
- Rephrasing and combining points within about 80 words
Listening

- Listening for opinion and implied meaning
- Note-taking from an informational talk

Oral communication
A planned response to a video clip and a discussion with the examiners on a related topic.
Topics covered
- Using preparation time to plan a short talk
- Filling up to 2 minutes with developed ideas
- Engaging the listener
- Extending answers in discussion
- Practising on a computer, as the SEC oral is delivered

Before you book a Sec 3 English tutor
What parents ask at the start of upper secondary.
| Question | For Secondary 3 |
|---|---|
| Which tutor suits Sec 3? | Choose a tutor who knows the SEC papers at your child's level and marks writing against the band descriptors. A tutor who can stay into Sec 4 saves a change in the exam year. Profiles show qualifications and experience for each tutor. |
| What does it cost? | Sec 3 English uses the Upper Secondary band: S$35 to S$45 an hour with an undergraduate tutor, S$45 to S$65 with a full-time tutor and S$65 to S$95 with an ex-MOE teacher. With a full-time tutor, four lessons of 1.5 hours cost S$270 to S$390. |
| How does it start? | Tell us your child's school, whether English is at G2 or G3, and which paper worries you most. We send 2 to 4 tutor profiles within 16 hours. The first lesson is a paid trial at the tutor's hourly rate. |
| What are the terms? | No contract and no minimum, so the plan can change as Sec 3 workload shifts. Cancel or move a lesson at least 24 hours ahead, or it is charged. If the fit is wrong, we re-match you free. |

Secondary 3 English Tuition: a guide for parents
Secondary 3 is the first year where English is taught with the national exam in view. Students in Sec 3 in 2027 will sit the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate in 2028, at the level they take English. The 2027 SEC English papers keep the same four parts as the O-Level: Writing, Comprehension, Listening and Oral Communication. What changes in Sec 3 is length and stamina. A G3 situational writing task asks for 250 to 350 words, and the continuous writing piece 350 to 500. Many students have never written that much in one sitting.
Read the full guide
A Sec 3 English tutor uses the year to build each part in turn, so nothing is left to Sec 4. Lessons follow your child's school, which sets its own order and its own common tests. Writing is marked against the band descriptors for task fulfilment, content and language, and comprehension answers are reworked until the reasoning is clear. The tutor also asks for your child's returned scripts, since the school's feedback shows which part is slipping. Outcomes vary, and we report progress by paper, not by one overall grade.
A narrative comprehension passage might read: The rain hammered on the zinc roof all night, and nobody in the house slept. A Sec 3 question asks for the effect of the word 'hammered'. A typical first answer is that it shows the rain was heavy, which is the literal meaning and earns little. A full answer adds what the word suggests: hammering is loud, repeated and forceful, so the rain sounds relentless, almost violent, and it explains why no one could sleep.
A tutor teaches a three-step answer: what the word literally means here, what it suggests or makes the reader feel, and how that fits the moment in the story. Your child practises this on one or two phrases from every passage they read, which also improves their own descriptive writing.

Secondary 3 English Tuition: frequently asked questions
Which exam will my child sit after Sec 3?
A student in Sec 3 in 2027 sits the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate in 2028, not the O-Level. The last O-Level English papers were in 2026. G3 English in the 2027 SEC is syllabus K300 and G2 English is K200. SEAB says the mode of assessment and standards stay the same as the O-Level and N-Level.
How much does Secondary 3 English tuition cost?
Sec 3 is in our Upper Secondary rate band. Rates run S$35 to S$45 an hour for an undergraduate tutor, S$45 to S$65 for a full-time tutor and S$65 to S$95 for an ex-MOE teacher. Weekly 1.5-hour lessons with writing marked between sessions work well for English in Sec 3.
Is Sec 3 too early to practise exam papers?
Not for single sections. Sec 3 is a good time to practise one part at a time, such as a situational writing task or a summary, at the length the SEC asks for. Full timed papers are better left for Sec 4, once each part is secure. The tutor uses the school's own tests to decide which part needs work first.
What is the difference between G2 and G3 English papers?
In the 2027 SEC, both levels have the same four papers, marks and timings. The G3 paper asks for longer writing, 250 to 350 words of situational writing against 180 to 250 at G2, and 350 to 500 words of continuous writing against 250 to 400. The two comprehension passages are also longer at G3.
