Where Primary 2 English starts to wobble

P2 children often read smoothly enough that parents assume all is well. These are the gaps that tend to show up in homework and reading at home.

Your child reads a page aloud well but cannot tell you what happened, or why a character did something.

Spelling is learnt word by word for the weekly list and forgotten once the list changes.

A recount of the weekend is one long sentence joined by and then, with no full stops.

Past and present tense are mixed in the same story, such as Yesterday I go to the park.

A why question gets a one-word answer, or an answer copied from the book that does not fit.

These are easier to fix in P2, before P3 brings marked assessments and longer passages.

What a P2 English tutor covers

P2 is the second half of the Lower Primary stage in the MOE syllabus. The tutor builds on P1 reading and moves your child towards the close reading and planned writing that P3 expects.

Reading for meaning

Moving from reading the words correctly to understanding and talking about them.

Topics covered
  • Retelling a story in order
  • Finding the sentence that answers a question
  • Why and how questions about characters
  • Working out a new word from the sentence around it
  • Reading with expression and pauses at full stops

Spelling and word patterns

Spelling taught through patterns that cover many words, not only a weekly list.

Topics covered
  • Long vowel spellings, such as ai, ay and ee
  • Adding s, ed and ing to a word
  • Words that sound the same but are spelt differently
  • Common tricky words for the year
  • Checking spelling by sounding the word out again

Grammar in sentences

The syllabus starts with grammar at word, phrase and sentence level, learnt in real sentences.

Topics covered
  • Naming words, doing words and describing words
  • Keeping to past tense in a recount
  • Singular and plural with is, are, was and were
  • Capital letters, full stops and question marks
  • Joining ideas with because, so and when

Writing and speaking

Short pieces that recount or describe, and speaking in full sentences with clear pronunciation.

Topics covered
  • A three or four sentence recount
  • Writing about a picture with a beginning, middle and end
  • Describing a person or place with two details
  • Talking about a book or a picture for a minute
  • Listening to a short story and answering questions

What changes from P2 to P3 English

P3 is the start of the Middle Primary stage in the MOE syllabus and the first year with marked assessments. Seeing the change side by side shows what a P2 tutor is preparing for.

None of the P3 skills appears suddenly. A child who already answers why questions and writes in linked sentences in P2 finds the P3 papers far less of a shock.

Primary 2 English Tuition: a guide for parents

By Primary 2 most children can decode a simple page. The question shifts from whether your child can read the words to whether your child understood them. A P2 reader may sound fluent and still be unable to say why a character was upset, or what happened first. The MOE English syllabus treats P1 and P2 as one Lower Primary stage, aiming for accuracy and fluency through word recognition and a positive attitude to reading. P2 is the year to make that solid, because the Middle Primary stage that starts in P3 asks for close reading at the literal and inferential levels, using clues in the text and what the child already knows.

Read the full guide

A P2 English tutor works 1-to-1 on reading with questions, spelling by pattern rather than by memory alone, and writing three or four linked sentences instead of one long chain joined by 'and then'. There are still no weighted assessments or exams in P2, so the end of the year arrives without a mark that tells you where your child stands. The tutor gives you that picture in plain words. Lessons run at home or online, usually once a week for about an hour. We send 2 to 4 tutor profiles on WhatsApp within 16 hours, each showing the tutor's qualifications, experience and rate, and you choose.

A typical P2 writing fix: your child writes, I went to the zoo and then I saw a lion and then I ate ice cream and then I went home. The ideas are fine. The problem is the chain. A tutor first asks your child to read it aloud and notice where the breath runs out. Together they split it into four sentences, each with a capital letter and a full stop.

Then the tutor adds one joining word that carries meaning: I went to the zoo because it was my brother's birthday. Finally your child adds one detail to a single sentence, such as how the lion looked. In four steps, a list turns into a short recount, the kind of text the syllabus asks lower primary children to produce.

Primary 2 English Tuition: frequently asked questions

Does my child sit English exams in Primary 2?

No. MOE removed weighted assessments and exams in P1 and P2 from 2019, including the P2 year-end exam. Teachers check reading, spelling and writing through class work and describe progress in words. Without a mark, it is easy to miss that a fluent reader is not understanding. A P2 tutor tells you clearly what your child manages alone and what still needs support.

Is P2 too early for English tuition?

Not if there is a clear reason. Common ones are reading that sounds fine but carries little meaning, spelling that does not stick, or writing that stays at one sentence. Starting in P2 gives a full year to build these before P3 marks begin. If your child is coping well, a tutor will say so, and a lighter schedule may be enough.

How much does Primary 2 English tuition cost?

P2 is in our Lower Primary band: S$25 to S$35 an hour with an undergraduate tutor, S$35 to S$45 with a full-time tutor and S$50 to S$70 with an ex-MOE teacher. A weekly lesson of about an hour is common in P2, with reading practice at home between lessons.

How can I help with P2 English at home?

Read with your child most days and talk about the book afterwards. Ask what happened, why it happened and what might happen next. Let your child read some pages aloud to you. The tutor can suggest books at the right level and send a short activity for the week, so home reading supports what the lessons teach.
