What P2 parents tend to notice

P2 work is still gentle, but the gaps that will matter in P3 are already visible at home.

A short story is read aloud correctly, but your child cannot say what happened in it.

Writing about a picture stops after one sentence, or every sentence starts with 'I'.

The 3 and 4 times tables are recited from the start each time instead of recalled.

Mother Tongue spelling or dictation scores drop as the word lists get longer.

Money questions go wrong when $2.35 has to be written as 235 cents.

Each one is easier to fix in a year without marks than in P3, when four subjects are assessed at once.

How PSLE Achievement Levels work

Each subject gets an AL from 1 (best) to 8. The four ALs add up to the PSLE score, from 4 to 32.

What P2 tuition can cover

A P2 tutor works on the current school topics and quietly prepares for P3. These are the usual areas.

English: understanding what is read

Moving from reading words correctly to understanding a whole passage and writing a few connected sentences.

Topics covered
  • Retelling a story in order
  • Answering who, what, where and why questions
  • Building vocabulary from reading
  • Joining ideas with 'and', 'but' and 'because'
  • Writing three or four sentences about a picture

Mother Tongue: more words, more reading

Longer lists and passages, so regular revision of what was taught matters more than in P1.

Topics covered
  • Revising each week's new words
  • Reading passages aloud with expression
  • Simple sentence patterns from the textbook
  • Oral practice on everyday topics
  • Dictation preparation

Maths: numbers to 1,000 and the first tables

The P2 content in the 2021 MOE syllabus, built around place value and the first five times tables.

Topics covered
  • Place value in hundreds, tens and ones
  • Adding and subtracting up to 3 digits
  • Times tables of 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10, with division
  • Fractions of a whole and adding like fractions
  • Money, length, mass, volume and time to the minute
  • Picture graphs with scales

What changes between P2 and P3

P2 is the last unmarked year. This is how P3 differs, from MOE's assessment policy and syllabuses.

Each school sets its own assessment plan within these rules, so ask for it early in P3 and share it with the tutor.

Before you book a P2 tutor

The questions P2 parents ask most, with a year to go before marks.

QuestionFor Primary 2
Which tutor suits P2?A tutor who is patient with seven and eight year olds and makes practice feel short. Undergraduate tutors teach P2 often and suit most needs. Choose a full-time tutor or an ex-MOE teacher if your child is well behind. Every profile lists the tutor's qualifications, experience and subjects.
What does it cost? Each P2 subject is charged at Lower Primary rates: S$25 to S$35 an hour with an undergraduate tutor, S$35 to S$45 with a full-time tutor and S$50 to S$70 with an ex-MOE teacher. English and Maths at one hour each a week with a full-time tutor come to S$280 to S$360 for eight lessons in four weeks.
How does it start?Tell us the school, the subject and one example of what goes wrong, such as reading or the 4 times table. We send 2 to 4 tutor profiles within 16 hours. The first lesson is a paid trial at the tutor's hourly rate.
What are the terms? No contract and no minimum, so a single term before P3 is fine. Cancel or move a lesson at least 24 hours ahead, or it is charged. If the tutor is not the right fit, we re-match you free.

Primary 2 Tuition: a guide for parents

Primary 2 keeps the same three main subjects as P1: English, a Mother Tongue Language and Maths. It is also the last year without marks. MOE removed weighted assessments and examinations for P1 and P2 from 2019, including the P2 year-end exam, so the report book still uses descriptors rather than scores. In Maths the year moves to numbers up to 1,000, the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables, fractions of a whole, money in decimal notation and picture graphs with scales. In English, the reading grows longer and children write more than a sentence at a time.

The reason some families start in P2 is what comes next. In P3, Science joins the timetable and weighted assessments start in every subject, both in the same year. A child who still sounds out common words or counts the 4 times table on fingers will feel that change sharply. P2 is a calm year to settle reading and the times tables, without a test date pushing the pace. Fewer parents search for P2 help than for P1 or P3, and many book one subject for a term or two rather than the whole year. Each subject page has the P2 detail.

A P2 money question shows how small habits matter: Ali has $2.35 and Mei has 180 cents. Who has more, and by how much? Many children compare 2.35 with 180, see that 180 is bigger and answer Mei. The P2 syllabus asks children to convert money in decimal notation to cents and back, so a tutor teaches one step first: write both amounts in the same unit. $2.35 is 235 cents, so Ali has more, by 235 minus 180, which is 55 cents. The tutor has your child say the unit aloud before comparing, every time. The same check, same unit before you compare, comes back in P3 with lengths and masses in compound units.

Primary 2 Tuition: frequently asked questions

Is Primary 2 too early for tuition?

Not if there is a clear gap. P2 suits targeted help: reading comprehension, the first times tables, or a Mother Tongue the family does not speak at home. If your child is coping and enjoys school, reading together and short practice may be all that is needed. A term of weekly lessons before P3 is a common plan.

How much does Primary 2 tuition cost?

Rates for P2 follow our Lower Primary band, at S$25 to S$35 an hour with an undergraduate tutor, S$35 to S$45 with a full-time tutor and S$50 to S$70 with an ex-MOE teacher. A month of weekly 1-hour lessons with a full-time tutor is S$140 to S$180.

How will I know how my child is doing in P2?

There are no marks, so use what the school gives you: the qualitative descriptors in the report book, the teacher's comments at parent meetings and the homework that comes back. A tutor adds a plain view of which topics your child manages alone and which still need support, which helps you decide whether to continue into P3.

Which subject should we start with in P2?

Start where homework is hardest. For many families that is the Mother Tongue. For others it is English reading or the times tables in Maths. If both English and Maths need work, one tutor can sometimes teach both at lower primary, which keeps one routine. The tutor profiles we send say which subjects each tutor teaches.
