Where IGCSE English marks slip
IGCSE English is marked closely against Cambridge's assessment objectives. These problems come up often, whichever syllabus your child takes.
The 0500 selective summary goes over 120 words or copies the text, so marks for own-words writing are lost.
Directed writing repeats the source texts instead of evaluating them for a speech, letter or article.
Compositions describe or narrate without control of structure, so they read like a list of events.
In ESL papers, the informal email and the formal piece sound the same, with no change in register.

Students practise with old past papers and are surprised by the 2027 0500 layout.
Each of these maps to a Cambridge assessment objective, so the tutor can show your child exactly what the marker is looking for.

What international school families ask before choosing a tutor.
| Question | For IGCSE English |
|---|---|
| Which tutor suits IGCSE? | Choose a tutor who has taught the Cambridge syllabus your child is entered for, since 0500 and the ESL syllabuses test different things. Ask whether they know the 2027 changes to 0500. The profiles show what each tutor has taught before. |
| What does it cost? | IGCSE English shares the IB Diploma and IGCSE band: S$45 to S$60 an hour with an undergraduate tutor, S$65 to S$90 with a full-time tutor and S$90 to S$130 with an ex-MOE teacher. Booking four 1.5-hour lessons with a full-time tutor costs S$390 to S$540. |
| How does it start? | Tell us the school, the syllabus code, the exam series and whether your child does coursework. We send 2 to 4 tutor profiles within 16 hours. The first lesson is a paid trial at the tutor's hourly rate. |
| What are the terms? | No contract and no minimum, so lessons can follow the school's own calendar and holidays. Cancel or move a lesson at least 24 hours ahead, or it is charged. If the fit is wrong, we re-match you free. |

IGCSE English Tuition: a guide for parents
Students at international schools in Singapore who take Cambridge IGCSE English usually sit one of three syllabuses. First Language English 0500 is for students whose main language is English, with a Reading paper and either a writing paper or a coursework portfolio. English as a Second Language comes as 0510, where speaking is endorsed separately, or 0511, where speaking counts toward the grade. All three are graded A* to G. Knowing which code your child is entered for decides what a tutor teaches, because the tasks, the marks and the role of speaking are very different.
Read the full guide
The 0500 syllabus has been revised for exams from 2027. Paper 1 Reading now has four compulsory questions worth 20 marks each, and Paper 2 adds a short reading question before the directed writing task. A student who prepared with 2026 past papers needs to practise the new layout. Our IGCSE English tutors work from the correct Cambridge syllabus for your child's exam year, mark writing against its assessment objectives, and build timed practice into the run-up to the June or November series. Where the school uses the coursework option, the tutor helps plan drafts without writing them.
In 0510 and 0511, one writing exercise asks for an informal email of 120 to 160 words, marked out of 6 for content and 9 for language. A typical prompt asks your child to write to a friend about a school event, covering what happened, what they enjoyed and what they plan next. Many students cover two prompts well and forget the third, which caps the content mark. Others write formally, which does not suit a friend.
A tutor teaches a short routine: tick off each prompt as it is answered, keep the tone warm and natural, and use a few varied sentence structures for the language mark. The same routine is then adapted for the second, formal task, an article, report, essay or review, where the register has to change.

IGCSE English Tuition: frequently asked questions
Which IGCSE English syllabus is my child taking?
Ask the school for the syllabus code. First Language English is 0500. English as a Second Language is 0510, where the speaking mark is reported separately, or 0511, where speaking counts for 25% of the grade. All are graded A* to G. The code decides which papers your child sits, so the tutor needs it before the first lesson.
How much does IGCSE English tuition cost?
IGCSE is in our IB Diploma and IGCSE rate band. An undergraduate tutor charges S$45 to S$60 an hour, a full-time tutor S$65 to S$90, and an ex-MOE teacher S$90 to S$130. Weekly lessons through the two exam years are common, with more sessions before the June or November series.
What changed in IGCSE First Language English for 2027?
Cambridge revised 0500 for first exams in 2027. Paper 1 Reading keeps 80 marks and 2 hours but now has four compulsory questions of 20 marks each, including a new short question on attitudes after the summary. Paper 2 adds a 5-mark reading question before the directed writing task, and the marking criteria were updated.
Does the speaking test count in IGCSE English?
It depends on the syllabus. In 0511 the speaking test counts for 25% of the grade. In 0510 the speaking mark does not count toward the grade and is shown separately on the certificate, from 1 to 5. In 0500 the Speaking and Listening Test is optional and also reported separately.
