Where IP English gets difficult

IP English moves fast and is set by the school, not by a national syllabus. These struggles are common in Years 1 to 4.

Essay tasks ask for a thesis and an argument, and your child is still writing summaries of the text.

Analysis of an unseen poem, speech or advert stays at what it says, with little on how it works.

The school's rubric uses terms such as 'insight' or 'sophistication' that your child cannot turn into action.

Oral presentations and seminar discussions are a large part of the grade, and your child freezes or reads from notes.

Long-term projects or research essays are started late, without a plan for drafts.

IP English rewards independent thinking, which can be taught step by step once the school's expectations are clear.

The skills IP English builds toward

Each IP school designs its own English programme, so the tutor starts from your child's unit outlines, tasks and rubrics. The skills below are the ones the IP's own end points ask for, whether your child finishes with the A-Level or the IB.

Argument and essay writing

Building a clear thesis and sustaining it with reasoning and evidence.

Topics covered
  • Writing a thesis that answers the question
  • Topic sentences that advance the argument
  • Using evidence and explaining its relevance
  • Dealing with counter-arguments
  • Conclusions that reach a judgement

Textual analysis

Explaining how writers and speakers shape meaning, in literary and non-literary texts.

Topics covered
  • Annotating an unseen text
  • Identifying purpose, audience and context
  • Analysing word choice, structure and imagery
  • Visual and multimodal texts
  • Comparing two texts on a theme

Speaking and presenting

Oral tasks that ask your child to present, discuss and respond.

Topics covered
  • Planning a short talk from notes, not a script
  • Responding to questions on the spot
  • Taking part in a seminar discussion
  • Using evidence when speaking
  • Recorded practice with feedback

Working to the school's rubric

Turning the school's criteria into concrete steps and planning longer work.

Topics covered
  • Reading each rubric band together
  • Rewriting a paragraph to reach the next band
  • Planning drafts for long projects
  • Using teacher feedback between drafts
  • Language accuracy in extended writing

IP English: what is fixed and what your school decides

Parents often ask what an IP English tutor can follow when there is no national syllabus. This is what MOE states, and what the school sets.

Bring the school's term outline and one returned essay to the first lesson. It lets the tutor plan around what your child will actually be marked on.

QuestionThe answer
How long is the IP?Six years, ending in the GCE A-Level, the IB Diploma or the NUS High School Diploma, depending on the school.
Is there a Sec 4 national exam? No. IP students do not need to take the SEC in Sec 4.
Who designs the English curriculum? The school. MOE says each IP school's programme is unique and builds on its own strengths, culture and ethos.
Who sets the tests and rubrics? The school, so the tutor works from your child's own task sheets, rubrics and returned scripts.
Can students change IP school?MOE says transfers between IP schools are generally not allowed.

IP English Tuition: a guide for parents

The Integrated Programme is a six-year course that leads to the A-Level, the IB Diploma or the NUS High School Diploma, depending on the school. IP students do not take the SEC in Sec 4, and MOE says each IP school's programme is unique. So there is no single IP English syllabus to follow. The school writes its own units, its own assessments and its own rubrics. A good IP English tutor does not bring a fixed course. They read your child's unit outline and past tasks first, then teach to what that school marks.

Read the full guide

What IP English schools share is where the six years end. Students who finish with the A-Level take General Paper, and those on the IB take English A. Both reward clear argument, close reading of unseen texts and the ability to explain how language works on a reader. Years 1 to 4 are where those habits are built, without a national exam to pace them. Our tutors help your child plan essays, analyse texts with evidence, and prepare for oral presentations, all against the school's own criteria. Progress is checked on the school's returned work, not on a separate test.

Here is the kind of task an IP English student may meet: analyse how a short opinion article persuades its readers to cut food waste. A first attempt often lists what the article says, point by point. A stronger response opens with a thesis, for example that the writer persuades by making waste personal and the solution easy. Each paragraph then takes one method, such as the use of 'we' to include the reader, a striking statistic placed early, or a closing call to action.

Each is backed by a short quotation and an explanation of its effect on the reader. A tutor teaches this structure on short texts first, then on the kinds of text your child's school sets, using the school's rubric to show what the next band asks for.

IP English Tuition: frequently asked questions

Is there an IP English syllabus?

Not a common one. MOE says each IP school's programme is unique and builds on its own strengths. IP students do not sit the SEC in Sec 4, so there is no national English exam in Years 1 to 4. The school sets the units, tasks and marking. A tutor should ask to see your child's rubrics and returned work before planning lessons.

How much does IP English tuition cost?

IP Years 1 and 2 use our Lower Secondary band, S$30 to S$45 an hour for an undergraduate tutor up to S$60 to S$85 for an ex-MOE teacher. Years 3 and 4 use the Upper Secondary band, S$35 to S$45 up to S$65 to S$95. Full-time tutors sit in between.

Does IP English prepare for GP or IB English?

It depends on your school. The IP leads to the A-Level, the IB Diploma or the NUS High School Diploma. Students finishing with the A-Level usually take General Paper, and IB students take English A. Both reward argued essays and analysis of unseen texts, so these skills are worth building from Year 1.

Can my child switch IP schools if English is a struggle?

MOE says transfers between IP schools are generally not allowed, so most students stay in the same school's programme for all six years. That makes it worth sorting out English difficulties early, with work matched to the school's own expectations. Talk to the school first about the support it offers.
