What gets in the way in Primary 6 Maths
By P6 most children know much of the content. Marks are lost in the new P6 topics, in timing, and in how working is shown.
Ratio questions where one amount changes, such as a transfer between two people, are set up without finding what stays the same.
Percentage increase and decrease is worked out on the new value instead of the original value.
Circle questions use the diameter where the radius is needed, or leave out the straight edge in the perimeter of a semicircle.
Paper 1 runs out of time, so the last short-answer questions are rushed or left blank.

Paper 2 working is too brief to earn method marks when the final answer is wrong.
These are exam-year problems, and they respond to regular timed practice with careful review of every mistake.

How PSLE Achievement Levels work
Each subject gets an AL from 1 (best) to 8. The four ALs add up to the PSLE score, from 4 to 32.

P6 topics and PSLE preparation
The P6 content in the 2021 MOE syllabus is shorter than P5, but it includes the topics PSLE questions combine most often. A tutor teaches these first, then moves to mixed revision across P3 to P6.
Ratio and algebra
Two new topics. Ratio links back to fractions, and algebra introduces letters for unknown numbers.

Primary 6 Maths Tuition: a guide for parents
Primary 6 PSLE Maths is graded on the AL (Achievement Level) banded system: AL1 = 90+ marks, AL2 = 85 to 89, AL3 = 80 to 84, AL4 = 75 to 79, AL5 = 65 to 74, AL6 = 45 to 64. Secondary school cut-offs are set as PSLE Score totals, so moving Maths up one band lowers the total by one point and can change the posting outcome. P6 is not a content year, the syllabus is complete by mid-year, it is a revision, heuristic-consolidation and timed-paper year.

Our P6 Maths home tutors run a first-lesson diagnostic against recent PSLE papers and the student's school topical-test record to set an accurate band target, then structure the year around it. A common focus is the Paper 2 multi-step problem sum: students at the AL3 to AL5 boundary usually lose marks not from concept gaps but from skipping the model-drawing setup and leaping to algebra. We practise on past PSLE papers and school-style prelim questions. The plan builds in timed full papers ahead of the September prelim.
A typical P6 ratio question: Ali and Ben had marbles in the ratio 3:5. After Ben gave Ali 12 marbles, they had the same number. How many marbles did Ali have at first? The total does not change, so a tutor teaches your child to find the unchanged quantity first. Before, there are 3 units and 5 units, 8 units in all. After, the shares are equal, so each has 4 units.
Ben gave away 1 unit, which is 12 marbles, so Ali had 3 x 12 = 36 marbles at first. The common error is to treat the ratio numbers as the actual marbles. In Paper 2, a clear before-and-after table earns method marks even if the last step slips, which is why the tutor asks for the table every time.

What is the PSLE Maths paper format from 2026?
PSLE Maths has two papers on the same day, 100 marks in total. Paper 1 (1 h 10 min, no calculator) has 10 one-mark and 8 two-mark multiple-choice questions, then 12 two-mark short-answer questions, for 50 marks. Paper 2 (1 h 20 min, calculator allowed) has 5 two-mark short-answer questions and 10 structured or long-answer questions worth 3 to 5 marks each, also 50 marks.
How much does Primary 6 Maths tuition cost?
P6 is in our Upper Primary rate band. Typical hourly rates are S$35 to S$50 for an undergraduate tutor, S$45 to S$60 for a full-time tutor, and S$55 to S$75 for an ex-MOE teacher. Some P6 families add a second weekly lesson in the months before the preliminary exam and PSLE, then return to one lesson a week.
Is it too late to start Maths tuition in P6?
No, but the plan has to be tighter. Schools usually finish the P6 content early and then focus on revision and the preliminary exam. A tutor starting in P6 first finds which topics lose the most marks, then splits lesson time between those topics and timed practice. Starting early in the year leaves room for both.
How is Foundation Maths different at PSLE?
Foundation Mathematics has its own syllabus content and its own PSLE paper. It covers fewer topics, with no ratio, algebra or circles. Foundation results are graded A, B or C, which count as AL6, AL7 and AL8 in the PSLE Score. If your child takes Foundation Maths, ask for a tutor who works from Foundation materials rather than Standard papers.
