Secondary 2 Maths is the year the Additional Mathematics (4049) decision is effectively made. Most schools use Sec 2 end-of-year Maths performance to stream students into the Sec 3 A-Math class, and A-Math in turn is near-essential for the JC Science track and Polytechnic engineering courses. The Sec 2 syllabus — algebraic manipulation, expansion and factorisation, simultaneous equations, congruence and similarity, Pythagoras and trigonometry basics, direct and inverse proportion — is also the direct foundation that Sec 3 A-Math and E-Math build on.
