What makes Primary 3 Science tricky

Science is a new subject in P3, and the way it is tested surprises many families. These are the struggles that show up in the first year.

Classification charts are read wrongly, or a living thing is grouped by how it looks instead of by the feature the question gives.

Life cycle questions mix up three-stage and four-stage cycles, for example giving the grasshopper a pupa stage.

Magnet answers say a magnet attracts all metals, or mix up like and unlike poles.

Answers about materials name a property without saying why it suits the object's use.

Experiment questions leave your child unsure what was changed, what was kept the same, and why.

None of this needs more facts. It needs a way of reading questions and answering them that most eight year olds are still building.

How PSLE Achievement Levels work

Each subject gets an AL from 1 (best) to 8. The four ALs add up to the PSLE score, from 4 to 32.

  1. AL190 and above
  2. AL285 to 89
  3. AL380 to 84
  4. AL475 to 79
  5. AL565 to 74
  6. AL645 to 64
  7. AL720 to 44
  8. AL8Below 20

The four P3 Science topics

Under the 2023 MOE Primary Science syllabus, P3 covers topics from three themes: Diversity, Cycles and Interactions. The Systems and Energy topics begin in P4.

Diversity of living and non-living things

What makes something alive, and how living things are sorted into broad groups by what can be observed.

Topics covered
  • Characteristics of living things: need water, food and air. Grow, respond and reproduce
  • Flowering and non-flowering plants
  • Animal groups: amphibians, birds, fish, insects, mammals and reptiles
  • Fungi such as mould, mushroom and yeast
  • Bacteria
  • Classifying living things by similarities and differences

Diversity of materials

Why objects are made from the materials they are, based on physical properties.

Topics covered
  • Wood, metal, ceramic, rubber, glass, plastic and fabric
  • Strength and flexibility
  • Ability to float or sink in water
  • Waterproof materials
  • How much light a material allows through
  • Matching a material to its use

Life cycles of plants and animals

Observing and comparing how living things change over their lives.

Topics covered
  • Stages of a flowering plant: seed, young plant, adult plant
  • Growing plants from seeds and recording changes over time
  • Life cycles of the chicken, frog and cockroach
  • Life cycles of the butterfly, mosquito, beetle and grasshopper
  • Comparing life cycles with different stages

Magnets

The first topic on forces, taught through simple investigations.

Topics covered
  • A magnet can push or pull
  • Two poles: like poles repel, unlike poles attract
  • A freely hanging bar magnet rests pointing north and south
  • Magnetic and non-magnetic materials
  • Making a magnet by the stroke method and the electrical method
  • Uses of magnets in everyday objects

Primary 3 Science Tuition: a guide for parents

Primary 3 is the first year of Science in Singapore schools. The P3 and P4 MOE syllabus is built around themes: the diversity of living things and of materials, life cycles of plants and animals, plant and human body systems, magnets, and light and heat. P3 children meet these ideas for the first time, and the questions already ask them to explain what they observe, not only to recall facts.

Read the full guide

A P3 home tutor builds the habits the PSLE later rewards: reading a question carefully, describing an observation precisely, and using the keywords a marker looks for. Lessons follow the school topics with simple experiments at home where they help, and short written answers so your child gets used to explaining in full sentences. Starting well in P3 makes the heavier P5 and P6 content far less of a shock.

A typical P3 question shows a table of four materials, A to D, with results for strength, flexibility and whether each floats, then asks which material is most suitable for a raft and why. The common error is to name a material without a reason, or to give a reason the table does not support, such as 'it is light'.

A full answer names the property and links it to the use: material C floats on water, so the raft stays on the surface, and it is strong, so it will not break when someone sits on it. A tutor trains this two-part pattern, property then purpose, on many short questions. The same pattern returns with conductors of heat in P4 and electrical conductors in P5.

Primary 3 Science Tuition: frequently asked questions

How is P3 Science assessed in school?

The 2023 syllabus recommends that school-based Science assessment combines written tests, weighted 70% to 85%, with performance-based tasks, weighted 15% to 30%. These tasks can include practicals, projects, model-making, journals or teacher observation. So your child's result is not only the written paper. A tutor helps with both: clear written answers and careful recording of observations.

How much does Primary 3 Science tuition cost?

P3 is in our Lower Primary rate band. Typical hourly rates are S$30 to S$40 for an undergraduate tutor, S$40 to S$55 for a full-time tutor, and S$50 to S$65 for an ex-MOE teacher. Many P3 families pair Science with Maths or English in one longer weekly session with the same tutor, which can be simpler to schedule.

Does my child need to memorise animal names for P3 Science?

No. The 2023 syllabus says recall of the names of specific living things and their characteristics is not required. Questions give the information, and your child uses it to classify or compare. Likewise, the terms transparent, translucent and opaque are not required. Children describe whether a material lets most, some or no light through. A tutor focuses on using information, not memorising lists.

Should my child start Science tuition in P3?

Only if there is a reason. Many children manage P3 Science with school lessons and some reading at home. Tuition helps when your child finds it hard to explain answers in full sentences, misreads experiment questions, or struggles with the English in Science questions. It can also suit a child who will need steady support through P4, when the Standard or Foundation decision is made.
