Where Sec 4 Chinese marks slip

By Sec 4 most students know the papers. Marks are usually lost to time, focus and the oral, not to unknown content.

The composition runs past the time, so the email is written in a rush, or the other way round.

Email answers cover some of the required points but not all, which caps the mark however good the Chinese is.

Compositions go off topic halfway, especially on argumentative questions.

The oral is prepared from memorised scripts that do not fit the video clip on the day.

Revision is left for October like the other subjects, when the Chinese written papers come in September.

A plan that starts from the September paper fixes most of these.

What Sec 4 Chinese lessons cover

Lessons follow the G3 Chinese paper (K320) or the G2 paper (K220) and the school's prelim timing, with everything practised under time.

Topics covered
  • Splitting the 2 hours between the two tasks
  • Covering every point in the email

  • Staying on topic in argumentative writing
  • Using the approved dictionary sparingly

  • Checking answers in the last ten minutes

Paper 3: oral and listening

Reading aloud, the video-based conversation and 10 listening questions.

Topics covered
  • Mock orals with unseen video clips
  • Flexible ideas instead of memorised scripts
  • Reading aloud with expression
  • Listening to news reports and announcements
  • Note-taking during listening

Secondary 4 Chinese Tuition: a guide for parents

Secondary 4 Chinese (中四华文) in 2027 is a year of firsts. The Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) replaces the O-Level, and G3 Chinese Language moves from syllabus 1160 to K320. The papers themselves do not change: SEAB's two syllabuses set the same writing, comprehension, oral and listening papers with the same marks, and SEAB says the overall standard stays the same. What changes is the calendar. O-Level Mother Tongue written papers came in two sittings, one at mid-year. Under the SEC there is one sitting for all Mother Tongue levels, in September, with the oral and listening before it.

Read the full guide

That puts the Chinese peak in Term 3, weeks before the other subjects. A Sec 4 tutor plans backwards from September: timed emails and compositions early in the year, oral practice in time for the oral, then full papers under time in the June holidays. Each lesson ends with something marked, a paragraph, a set of answers or a recorded response, so progress is visible. Higher Chinese (K355) sits in the same September period, and our Higher Chinese page covers that paper. If your child takes G2 Chinese, the plan follows the K220 papers, which fall in the same September sitting.

The email task is worth 20 marks and needs at least 150 characters. A typical question gives an email from a cousin overseas who plans to visit Singapore during the holidays and asks three things: where to go, what to eat and what to pack. Students often write a lively reply about food and forget the packing question, which caps the content mark. A tutor teaches your child to number the points in the question before writing, then tick each one off in the draft.

The tone matters too: a cousin gets a warm, informal reply, while an email to a community centre needs polite, formal phrasing. With that checklist, the email takes about 30 minutes, which leaves the rest of the 2 hours for the 40-mark composition.

Secondary 4 Chinese Tuition: frequently asked questions

Is the SEC Chinese paper harder than O-Level Chinese?

SEAB says there is no change in the overall standard of examinations under the SEC. The G3 Chinese syllabus K320 sets the same papers as O-Level Chinese 1160: writing 30%, language use and comprehension 35%, oral 25% and listening 10%, with the same tasks and marks. Past O-Level papers therefore remain useful practice for the SEC.

When are the Sec 4 Chinese papers in 2027?

SEAB holds the Mother Tongue written papers in September under the SEC, together with the English written papers. The oral and listening are held before the written papers. The other subjects are written from October to November. SEAB publishes the exact dates in its timetable, and the school will share them, so ask for them early in the year.

How is G3 Chinese graded?

G3 subjects in the SEC use the same grades as the O-Level: A1, A2, B3, B4, C5, C6, D7, E8 and 9. G2 subjects use grades 1 to 6, and G1 subjects use A to E. Results for the SEC are released in January of the following year, so a Sec 4 student in 2027 receives results in January 2028.

Does Higher Chinese sit at the same time?

Yes. SEAB holds one written sitting for all Mother Tongue levels, including G3 Higher Chinese (K355), in September. Higher Chinese has its own papers: a composition of at least 500 characters, a summary of about 80 characters in the comprehension paper, and an oral presentation with discussion. Our Higher Chinese tuition page covers that subject.

How much does Secondary 4 Chinese Tuition Singapore cost?

Rates run S$35 to S$95 an hour, depending on the tutor: undergraduate tutors at the lower end, ex-MOE teachers at the upper end. You pay only the hourly rate on your tutor's shortlist.
