I’ve tried other tuition agencies before, but TSS is definitely the one I’d recommend. The service is much better.

What makes JC Chinese hard

JC Chinese is short, one subject among many, and often sat early. These are the problems JC students bring to tuition.

The summary (缩写) in the H1 comprehension paper runs over its 70-character limit, or leaves out a key idea.

H1 essays of 500+ characters state opinions without current examples, so the argument stays thin.

The oral presentation is fine, but the discussion that follows, worth 30 of the 50 oral marks, gets short answers.

H2 Chinese Language and Literature students read the set texts once and struggle with open-book questions under time.

1 more

With H2 subjects taking up time, Chinese gets left until a few weeks before an end-of-JC1 sitting.

Each of these has a clear fix, and the earlier your child starts, the less it costs in JC2.

JC Chinese Tuition: a guide for parents

JC Chinese (高中华文) is not one subject. Most students take H1 Chinese Language (8655), with an essay of at least 500 characters, a comprehension paper that includes a summary, and an oral built on a short video clip. Students who love the language can take H2 Chinese Language and Literature (9575), where half the marks come from an open-book literature paper on classical prose and poetry, modern fiction and drama. Chinese B (8611) has typed writing and computer-based questions. MOE has announced that JC and MI students posted from 2028 onwards will take either H1 Mother Tongue or Mother Tongue 'B', depending on their SEC subjects.

Read the full guide

A JC tutor first checks which syllabus your child is on and when the paper falls, because H1 Chinese can be sat at the end of JC1. Lessons for H1 work on the summary, on essays that argue with current examples, and on the discussion that follows the oral presentation, which carries more marks than the presentation itself. For H2, the tutor reads the set texts with your child and practises open-book answers under time. For Chinese B, lessons build confidence with typing in pinyin and with the conversation on a video clip, at home or online around the college timetable.

The H1 summary is a good example of a small task with outsized trouble. The question points to a few paragraphs of the second comprehension passage and asks for a summary of no more than 70 characters. Students usually fail in one of two ways: they copy whole sentences and run out of space, or they cut so hard that a key idea disappears. A tutor teaches a fixed routine. First, mark each main idea in the paragraphs, often three or four.

Second, write each idea in a short phrase of your own. Third, join the phrases with connectives such as 因此 or 不但, and count the characters. Fourth, cut repeated words, never ideas. Practised on a passage a week, the summary becomes predictable marks.

JC Chinese Tuition: frequently asked questions

When is H1 Chinese sat?

SEAB's H1 Chinese syllabus allows JC1 students to sit at the end of the year, and JC2 students to sit at mid-year or at the end of the year. Many students therefore finish Chinese before their other A-Level subjects. Ask the college which sitting your child is entered for, because a JC1 sitting leaves less than a year to prepare.

What changes for JC Chinese from 2028?

MOE says that JC and Millennia Institute students posted from 2028 onwards will take either H1 Mother Tongue Language or Mother Tongue Language 'B', depending on the subjects they took at the SEC examinations. That affects students who sit the SEC in 2027. Check with the school which course your child will be placed in.

How different is H2 Chinese Language and Literature from H1?

Very. H2 CLL has no oral. Its writing paper asks for at least 600 characters and is taken on a computer, as is the comprehension paper, which includes a short commentary of up to 200 characters. Half the subject is a 3-hour open-book literature paper on prescribed classical and modern texts. It suits students who enjoy reading and analysing Chinese literature.

What is Chinese B at A-Level?

Chinese B (8611) is for students on the Chinese B course. Writing is an email or a diary entry of at least 200 characters, typed on a computer with pinyin input. The language use and reading paper is 20 multiple-choice questions on a computer. The oral, a presentation and a conversation, is 35%, and listening is 15%.

How much does JC Chinese Tuition Singapore cost?

Rates run S$45 to S$130 an hour, depending on the tutor: undergraduate tutors at the lower end, ex-MOE teachers at the upper end. You pay only the hourly rate on your tutor's shortlist.
