What goes wrong in Sec 2 Chinese
Sec 2 asks students to hold an opinion in Chinese, in writing and aloud. These are the signs a student is not there yet.
Argumentative compositions state a view in the first line and then tell a story, so there is no real argument.
Reasons are repeated in different words instead of supported with an example.
Questions on an advert or notice are answered from general knowledge, not from the details in the text.
In the oral, your child describes the video clip well but has nothing to say when asked what they think.
1 more
Character errors (错别字) such as 在 and 再, or 的, 得 and 地, keep costing marks in every piece of writing.
Upper secondary Chinese builds on all five of these, so Sec 2 is a good year to sort them out.

Before you book a Sec 2 Chinese tutor
What parents of a Sec 2 child ask before choosing a tutor.
| Question | For Secondary 2 |
|---|---|
| Which tutor suits Sec 2? | Look for a tutor who teaches argumentative writing and enjoys discussion, since Sec 2 is about opinions. If your child also takes Higher Chinese, check that the profile lists it alongside the tutor's qualifications and experience. |
| What does it cost? | Sec 2 Chinese is in the Lower Secondary band: S$30 to S$45 an hour with an undergraduate tutor, S$45 to S$60 with a full-time tutor and S$60 to S$85 with an ex-MOE teacher. A month of four weekly 1.5-hour lessons with a full-time tutor costs S$270 to S$360. |
| How does it start? | Send us your child's level, school and latest Chinese result, and say whether writing or speaking worries you more. We send 2 to 4 tutor profiles within 16 hours. The first lesson is a paid trial at the tutor's hourly rate. |
| What are the terms? | No contract and no minimum, so lessons can pause for a heavy CCA term. Cancel or move a lesson at least 24 hours ahead, or it is charged. If the fit is wrong, we re-match you free. |

Secondary 2 Chinese Tuition: a guide for parents
Secondary 2 Chinese (中二华文) is where many students first meet argumentative writing (议论文) in earnest. The G3 paper at the end of Sec 4 offers three composition questions across narrative, expository and argumentative writing, and a student who can only write stories has fewer choices. Reading also widens. The comprehension section of that paper uses practical texts such as advertisements, flyers and news reports, and MOE's syllabus brings contemporary issues and current affairs into class so students meet Chinese as a living language. In the oral, students are asked for their views on everyday topics, not just a description of the clip.

A Sec 2 home tutor works on three things the school year rarely has time for. The first is planning: a clear stand, two reasons and an example for each before writing a word. The second is reading real Chinese texts each week, from news items to notices, and talking about them. The third is spoken practice, so your child can give and defend an opinion for a minute or more. Lessons follow your child's G1, G2 or G3 level and school scheme of work. By the end of the year, your child should be able to plan a composition of each type in a few minutes.
Take a typical argumentative question: 有人认为中学生每天都应该使用社交媒体,你同意吗?Many students in Sec 2 write 我同意 and then describe one afternoon on their phone. That is a story, not an argument. A tutor teaches a plan in four parts. First, a clear stand in the opening paragraph. Second, two reasons, each with a specific example, such as a class project organised in a group chat. Third, one sentence that answers the other side, for example that screen time can hurt sleep, and how to manage it. Fourth, an ending that returns to the question.
Written this way, the piece passes 300 characters naturally, which is the G3 length for the Sec 4 composition, and the same plan works for a spoken answer in the oral.

Secondary 2 Chinese Tuition: frequently asked questions
Which national Chinese paper will my Sec 2 child sit?
A student in Sec 2 in 2027 reaches Sec 4 in 2029 and sits the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC). Chinese is examined at G1, G2 or G3. Under the SEC, all Mother Tongue written papers are held in one sitting in September, with the oral and listening earlier.
Why does Sec 2 focus on argumentative writing?
In the Sec 4 G3 paper, students choose one composition from three questions covering narrative, expository and argumentative writing. A student who can only write narratives may be left with one usable question. Argumentative writing also trains the thinking used in the oral, where students give and defend a view. Sec 2 gives time to practise planning before the exam years.
Should my child read Chinese news?
Yes, a little every week helps. MOE's syllabus uses contemporary issues and current affairs in class, and the multiple-choice comprehension section of the secondary paper uses texts such as adverts, flyers and news reports. A tutor can choose short articles at the right level and turn each one into a discussion, which also feeds ideas into compositions and the oral.
My child also takes Higher Chinese. Is that a separate tutor?
It can be the same tutor if they teach both. Higher Chinese is a separate subject with harder tasks: at the end of Sec 4 the composition needs at least 500 characters, and the oral is a presentation of up to 2 minutes followed by a discussion. Our Higher Chinese tuition page covers that subject. Tell us both subjects in your request.
