Signs your P1 child needs help with Chinese

P1 Chinese starts gently, but small gaps in sound and stroke habits grow quickly once the character lists get longer.

Tones are mixed up, so 妈 (mā, mother) and 马 (mǎ, horse) sound the same when your child reads aloud.

Characters are recognised on the textbook page but not when they appear in a new sentence.

Strokes are written in any order, which makes more complex characters harder to form later.

Your child understands simple Chinese but always replies in English when spoken to in Chinese.

You cannot read the homework yourself, so mistakes only surface when the teacher's comments come back.

None of these are serious in P1. They are habits, and habits are easiest to change in the first year.

  • Writing one or two sentences about a picture (写话)

How P1 Chinese is organised in school

MOE's primary Chinese course uses modules. Every child takes the core module, which fills 70% to 80% of lesson time. The rest depends on your child's starting point.

Schools can group P1 classes flexibly, because MOE notes that a P1 child's learning is still settling. Your child's module can change after P1.

ModuleWho takes itWhat it means for tuition
Core module (核心单元)Every child in the Chinese courseThe PSLE Chinese paper is set at this level, so the tutor treats the core lessons as the standard to reach.
Bridging module (导入单元)Children who have had little Chinese before P1Taught before the core lessons. A tutor adds the speaking and listening time these children miss at home.
School-based module (校本单元)Most children of average abilityDesigned by the school, so the tutor asks to see the school's own worksheets.
Enrichment module (深广单元)Stronger children who enjoy ChineseExtra depth. The tutor can add wider reading for a child who is ahead.

Primary 1 Chinese Tuition: a guide for parents

Primary 1 Chinese in 2027 follows MOE's 2024 primary Chinese curriculum, taught from the 《欢乐伙伴2.0》 textbooks that started with the P1 cohort of 2024. P1 is the first part of what MOE calls the foundation stage (奠基阶段). The focus is listening, speaking, simple conversation, and recognising and writing characters, with short sentence writing (写话) growing out of that. Each textbook lesson lists two sets of characters: ones your child should recognise when reading (识读字) and a smaller set to write from memory (识写字). In the very first lesson there are ten characters to read and five to write. P1 has no weighted assessments or exams, so the year is about habits, not marks.

Read the full guide

A common reason parents look for P1 Chinese tuition is that they read little Chinese themselves, so they cannot check the homework or answer their child's questions about it. That is a sound reason to get help early. A P1 Chinese tutor reads each textbook lesson with your child, practises hanyu pinyin and the four tones, and gets your child saying full sentences about home, school and food. Lessons are short and active, with flashcards, reading aloud and games built around that week's characters.

The tutor can explain in English where your child is lost, then switch back to Chinese. Ask for a short note after each lesson listing what to revise at home, even if you cannot read it yourself.

Here is how a P1 tutor might teach radicals, which the MOE curriculum asks children to recognise. The very first textbook lesson includes 口 (mouth) among the characters to write. A few weeks later the reading lists bring in 吃 (eat), then 唱 (sing) and later 叫 (call). The tutor writes the three side by side and asks what they share. Each has 口 on the left, and each is something you do with your mouth.

Your child then sorts a small pile of character cards into a mouth group and a not-mouth group. Once a child sees that a part of a character gives a clue to its meaning, new characters stop looking like random strokes, and the long reading lists of P2 and P3 become far easier to remember.

Primary 1 Chinese Tuition: frequently asked questions

We speak English at home. Will P1 Chinese be too hard for my child?

MOE plans for this. In P1 and P2, children who have had little contact with Chinese can take bridging modules (导入单元), taught before the core lessons to give them a base. Schools also have flexibility in how they group P1 classes. What school cannot add is speaking time at home, and that is where a tutor helps most in P1.

Can my child take Higher Chinese in P1?

Only in some schools. MOE's 2024 syllabus says Higher Chinese in P1 and P2 runs only in selected primary schools. Most children take the Chinese course in P1, and stronger children can be stretched through the enrichment modules (深广单元). A tutor can give extra reading for a child who is ahead without moving away from the school textbook.

How often should a P1 child have Chinese tuition?

One lesson a week of about an hour suits most P1 children. Six-year-olds remember characters more easily in short, frequent bursts, so the tutor usually leaves five to ten minutes of reading for each day between lessons. A second weekly lesson is worth it only if your child has very little Chinese at home.

There are no marks in P1. How will I know if tuition is working?

MOE removed weighted assessments and exams in P1 and P2 and asked schools to describe progress in words instead. So look for practical signs: your child reads the week's lesson aloud without stopping, writes the week's characters from memory, and answers a simple question in Chinese. Ask the tutor to show you these at the end of each month.

How much does Primary 1 Chinese Tuition Singapore cost?

Rates run S$25 to S$80 an hour, depending on the tutor: undergraduate tutors at the lower end, ex-MOE teachers at the upper end. You pay only the hourly rate on your tutor's shortlist.
