Why IGCSE Physics grades stall

IGCSE Physics looks manageable until the theory paper asks for working and explanation. These signs usually appear in the two years before the exam.

Distance-time and speed-time graphs are mixed up, so gradient and area are used the wrong way round.

Density questions with an irregular object skip the displacement step or use the wrong volume.

Specific heat capacity answers drop the temperature change or forget to turn grams into kilograms.

Students on the Extended course still add resistances in parallel as if they were in series.

Alternative to Practical answers describe an experiment loosely, without the variable to control or the reading to repeat.

These are habits, and habits change with regular, marked practice on Cambridge-style questions.

The six 0625 topics, grouped for lessons

Nuclear physics and space physics

The atom and radioactivity, then the Solar System, stars and the Universe.

Topics covered
  • The nuclear model of the atom
  • Detection of radioactivity
  • Alpha, beta and gamma emission
  • Radioactive decay and safety precautions
  • The Earth and the Solar System
  • The Sun as a star, and the Universe

Core or Extended: IGCSE Physics papers and grades

Every candidate takes three papers. Which ones depends on the route, as set out in the Cambridge 0625 syllabus for 2026, 2027 and 2028.

Momentum and impulse, and calculating the combined resistance of two resistors in parallel, are examples of Supplement content. If your child is near the Core and Extended boundary, the tutor starts with the Supplement topics your school has already taught.

IGCSE Physics Tuition: a guide for parents

Cambridge IGCSE Physics (0625) is a course for students aged about 14 to 16, studied in six topics: motion, forces and energy, thermal physics, waves, electricity and magnetism, nuclear physics, and space physics. The current syllabus runs for exams in 2026, 2027 and 2028, and Cambridge has already published the 2029 syllabus, stating there are no significant changes which affect teaching. Every topic has Core content, and the Extended course adds Supplement content to it. The route your child is entered for decides the papers and the grades available: Core candidates can reach grades C to G, and Extended candidates can reach A* to G.

Read the full guide

An IGCSE Physics tutor first checks whether your child is on Core or Extended, because the Supplement content changes what a lesson covers. Momentum and impulse, for example, are Supplement only, and so is calculating the combined resistance of two resistors in parallel. Lessons build a calculation routine, with the equation written, values substituted and the unit stated, and practise full-sentence explanations for the theory paper. The practical component is worth 20%, so the tutor also works on planning, recording and evaluating experiments. This matters most for students sitting the Alternative to Practical paper, who never handle apparatus in the exam room.

An Extended-style IGCSE Physics question: a 6.0 Ω resistor and a 3.0 Ω resistor are connected in parallel, and this pair is in series with a 4.0 Ω resistor across a 12 V supply. Find the current from the supply. The parallel pair has a combined resistance of 1 ÷ (1/6.0 + 1/3.0) = 2.0 Ω, which is less than either resistor, a fact the syllabus asks every candidate to state. The total is 2.0 + 4.0 = 6.0 Ω, so the current is 12 ÷ 6.0 = 2.0 A.

A common error is to add 6.0 and 3.0 and get 9.0 Ω. A tutor has your child check that a parallel total is smaller than the smallest branch before moving on, then asks for the p.d. across the 4.0 Ω resistor, which is 8.0 V.

IGCSE Physics Tuition: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Core and Extended IGCSE Physics?

Core covers the Core content only, and Extended covers Core plus Supplement content. Core candidates sit Paper 1 and Paper 3 and can achieve grades C to G. Extended candidates sit Paper 2 and Paper 4 and can achieve A* to G. Both take one practical paper. Cambridge advises Core entry for students expected to achieve grade D or below.

What are the IGCSE Physics papers?

There are three. The multiple-choice paper has 40 questions in 45 minutes and is worth 30%. The theory paper has short-answer and structured questions, 80 marks in 1 hour 15 minutes, worth 50%. The practical component is either Paper 5, a Practical Test of 1 hour 15 minutes, or Paper 6, an Alternative to Practical of 1 hour, each 40 marks and 20%.

Does IGCSE Physics change for 2029?

Cambridge has published the 2029 Physics syllabus and states there are no significant changes which affect teaching. Textbooks endorsed for examination from 2023 are still suitable. So a student starting the course in 2027 for a 2029 exam can use the same books and recent past papers as students sitting in 2026 to 2028.

When should my child start IGCSE Physics tuition?

Starting in the first year of the course gives time to secure the mechanics and electricity topics that later questions draw on. Students who join in the exam year can work from their mock results: the tutor picks the topics that lost the most marks and practises them with timed theory questions.

How much does IGCSE Physics Tuition Singapore cost?

Rates run S$45 to S$130 an hour, depending on the tutor: undergraduate tutors at the lower end, ex-MOE teachers at the upper end. You pay only the hourly rate on your tutor's shortlist.
