What costs marks in Sec 4 Physics

By Sec 4 most students know the topics. Marks are lost in how they use them under exam conditions.

In circuit questions, the effective resistance of parallel resistors is added like a series pair, so every later answer is wrong.

Transformer questions use the turns ratio the wrong way round, giving a step-down answer for a step-up transformer.

Ray diagrams for a converging lens are drawn freehand, so the image position and size cannot be read from the diagram.

The data-based question at the end of Paper 2 is left until the last minutes, though it carries 8 to 12 marks.

Half-life answers count the time for the activity to fall to zero instead of to half.

Most of these are fixed with targeted practice and careful marking, which is what the Sec 4 year has time for.

The later sections of the G3 Physics syllabus

Schools set their own order across Sec 3 and Sec 4, so these are the later syllabus sections, not a fixed Sec 4 list. The exam covers all 20 topics. Revision of Sec 3 topics runs alongside.

Topics covered
  • Speed, frequency, wavelength, period and amplitude
  • Speed of wave = frequency × wavelength
  • Transverse and longitudinal waves, echoes and ultrasound
  • The electromagnetic spectrum and its uses and hazards
  • Refraction, sin i/sin r and refractive index
  • Critical angle, total internal reflection and optical fibres
  • Ray diagrams for a thin converging lens

Electricity

Topics covered
  • Proton number, nucleon number, isotopes and nuclide notation
  • Alpha, beta and gamma radiation
  • Nuclear decay as random and spontaneous
  • Background radiation
  • Half-life calculations from tables and decay curves
  • Fission and fusion

The three G3 Physics papers in the 2027 SEC

Candidates take all three papers. This is SEAB's scheme of assessment for G3 Physics, syllabus K323.

These papers, marks and weightings match O-Level Physics 6091 as examined in 2026, so school practice papers from earlier years still fit the format.

PaperWhat it containsTime and marksWeighting
Paper 1, Multiple Choice40 compulsory multiple-choice items.1 h, 40 marks30%
Paper 2, Structured and Free ResponseSection A: compulsory structured questions for 70 marks. The last two carry 20 marks, and one is a data-based question worth 8 to 12 marks. Section B: answer one of two questions for 10 marks.1 h 45 min, 80 marks50%
Paper 3, PracticalSection A: one or two experiments in 55 minutes for 20 marks. Section B: one experiment in 55 minutes for 20 marks. Planning is 15% of the practical assessment.1 h 50 min, 40 marks20%

What families ask when Physics tuition starts in the exam year.

QuestionFor Secondary 4
Which tutor suits Sec 4 Physics?Choose a tutor who marks timed papers in detail and knows the data-based question and the practical paper well. An ex-MOE teacher or a full-time tutor who has taught the exam year recently suits a late start. Every profile sets out the tutor's qualifications, past experience and levels.
What does it cost?In the Upper Secondary band, an hour is S$35 to S$45 with an undergraduate tutor, S$45 to S$65 with a full-time tutor and S$65 to S$95 with an ex-MOE teacher. Eight 1.5-hour lessons with a full-time tutor, two a week in a busy month, total S$540 to S$780.
How does it start?Tell us the school, your child's last Physics result and the topics that feel weakest. We send 2 to 4 tutor profiles within 16 hours. The first lesson is a paid trial at the tutor's hourly rate.

Secondary 4 Physics Tuition: a guide for parents

Students in Sec 4 in 2027 are the first cohort to sit the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate. MOE announced in 2024 that the students who entered Sec 1 that year would sit the SEC in 2027, in place of the O-Level and N-Level. For Physics taken at G3, the syllabus code is K323. SEAB's 2027 K323 syllabus has the same learning outcomes, three papers, marks and weightings as O-Level Physics 6091, which was examined for the last time under that name in 2026. Past O-Level papers therefore remain sound practice. The grade is reported on the G3 scale, from A1 to 9.

The Sec 4 year is short. School finishes the remaining topics while revision of Sec 3 work has to start early. A Sec 4 Physics tutor plans backwards from the common SEC exam period, which MOE has set to start in October. Lessons split between closing gaps in Sec 3 topics such as kinematics and thermal physics, finishing the newer topics with the school, and timed practice on full papers. The tutor marks scripts the way the papers reward: working shown, the formula stated, units correct, and answers tied to the question.

A common Sec 4 circuit question: a 12 V supply is connected to a 4 Ω resistor in series with a parallel pair of 6 Ω and 3 Ω. Find the current through each resistor. Students often add all three, 13 Ω, and get the wrong current everywhere. The parallel pair is 1 ÷ (1/6 + 1/3) = 2 Ω, so the total resistance is 6 Ω and the supply current is 12 ÷ 6 = 2 A.

The 4 Ω resistor takes 8 V, leaving 4 V across the pair, so the 6 Ω branch carries 0.67 A and the 3 Ω branch 1.33 A, which add back to 2 A. A tutor teaches your child to redraw the circuit, combine the parallel part first and check that the branch currents sum to the total.

Secondary 4 Physics Tuition: frequently asked questions

Is SEC Physics different from O-Level Physics?

For G3 Physics, the content and format are the same. SEAB's 2027 K323 syllabus keeps the learning outcomes, the three papers, the marks and the weightings of O-Level Physics 6091 examined in 2026. The name, the code and the certificate change, and the grade is on the G3 scale from A1 to 9. Past O-Level Physics papers remain good practice.

How much does Secondary 4 Physics tuition cost?

Sec 4 is in our Upper Secondary band: S$35 to S$45 an hour with an undergraduate tutor, S$45 to S$65 with a full-time tutor and S$65 to S$95 with an ex-MOE teacher. Some families add a second weekly lesson after the June holidays, when full timed papers start, and return to one lesson once the papers are over.

When are the Sec 4 Physics papers in 2027?

MOE has set one common SEC exam period starting in October, with English and Mother Tongue written papers about a month earlier, in September. SEAB publishes the exact timetable, so check its site for the Physics dates once it is out. Results are released in January of the following year. The tutor plans the year so full-paper practice is done before the exam period.

Can tutoring help with the Physics practical?

Yes, in part. The practical paper is 40 marks over 1 h 50 min, in two sections of about 55 minutes each, and is worth 20% of the grade. A tutor at home cannot copy a school lab, but can practise the written skills: tables with units in the headings, consistent decimal places, graphs with suitable scales, gradients, sources of error and improvements to a method.
