Signs an IP Years 3 and 4 Physics student needs support
Without a national exam in Year 4, gaps in IP Physics can stay hidden until JC work exposes them.
School tests go well on recall, but questions set in an unfamiliar context are left half done.
Graphs are read for values but not for meaning, such as what the gradient or the area under a velocity-time graph stands for.
Open-ended investigations or projects take so long that core topics such as circuits fall behind.
Your child joined the IP at Sec 3 from another school, and the new course assumes topics they have not met.

Answers give the right number but no units, no formula and no statement of the physics used.
These are easier to fix in Years 3 and 4, before H2 Physics adds its own load in Year 5.
The ground H2 Physics builds on
IP schools set their own order and may go beyond these topics. Because H2 Physics assumes O-Level knowledge, the tutor uses the G3 Physics syllabus as a checklist of what must be secure by the end of Year 4, and teaches it in whatever order your child's school uses.

IP Years 3 and 4 Physics compared with the SEC track
What is fixed and what each school decides, using MOE's IP pages and SEAB's syllabuses. We describe no single school's Physics course, since each sets its own.
The H2 syllabus opens with a section called Foundations of Physics, which it says is meant to strengthen the approach learners bring from secondary school. Coming in with secure basics makes that section a review, not a rescue.
| Question | IP Years 3 and 4 | Sec 3 and 4 on the SEC track |
|---|---|---|
| National exam at the end of Year 4 or Sec 4 | None. IP students do not sit the SEC in Secondary 4. | SEC G3 Physics, syllabus K323, in three papers including a practical. |
| Who sets the course | Each IP school designs its own programme, so topics, pace and tests differ. | SEAB publishes one syllabus that every school teaches to. |
| Where it goes | The A-Level, the IB Diploma or the NUS High School Diploma, depending on the school. | JC, polytechnic or other routes after the SEC results. |
| What H2 Physics assumes | Knowledge and understanding of Physics at O-Level, which the IP covers in its own way. | The same knowledge, tested by the SEC paper itself. |

Before you book an IP Physics tutor
What IP families ask before Years 3 and 4 Physics tuition starts.
| Question | For IP Years 3 and 4 |
|---|---|
| Which tutor suits IP Physics? | Pick a tutor who is comfortable working from school materials and can also teach ahead toward H2 ideas when your child is ready. Some tutors also teach H2 Physics, which helps with the bridge. The profiles we send give qualifications, experience and the levels each tutor teaches. |
| What does it cost? | IP Years 3 and 4 use the Upper Secondary band: S$35 to S$45 an hour with an undergraduate tutor, S$45 to S$65 with a full-time tutor and S$65 to S$95 with an ex-MOE teacher. A month of four 2-hour lessons with a full-time tutor is S$360 to S$520. |
| How does it start? | Tell us the IP school, the year, and what the latest Physics test or project showed. We send 2 to 4 tutor profiles within 16 hours. The first lesson is a paid trial at the tutor's hourly rate. |
| What are the terms? | No contract and no minimum, so lessons can run only in the terms you need them. Cancel or move a lesson at least 24 hours ahead, or it is charged. If the fit is wrong, we re-match you free. |

IP Physics Tuition: a guide for parents
Students in the Integrated Programme do not sit the SEC in Secondary 4. MOE describes the IP as a six-year course, and says each IP school's programme is unique and builds on its own strengths. So there is no single IP Physics syllabus for Years 3 and 4, and a tutor should not pretend there is one. What is common is the destination. MOE describes the IP as a course to the A-Level, and the H2 Physics syllabus (9478) states that candidates are assumed to have knowledge and understanding of Physics at O-Level. Some IP schools end in the IB Diploma or the NUS High School Diploma instead.

That gives IP Physics tuition two jobs. The first is to keep up with your child's school course, which may move faster than the SEC track, add topics, or set open-ended tasks and projects. The tutor works from the school's notes, worksheets and returned tests. The second job is to make sure the ground covered by the G3 Physics syllabus is secure, since H2 builds on it and there is no Year 4 exam to expose gaps. Kinematics graphs, forces, energy, circuits and waves come up again in JC, and an IP student who skipped the basics can meet them again in Year 5 under time pressure.
A velocity-time question shows how a tutor builds the IP base: a car accelerates uniformly from rest to 20 m/s in 8 s, then travels at 20 m/s for 12 s. Find the distance travelled and the average speed. The distance is the area under the graph: a triangle of ½ × 8 × 20 = 80 m plus a rectangle of 20 × 12 = 240 m, so 320 m in total.
The average speed is 320 ÷ 20 = 16 m/s, not the average of 0 and 20 m/s. The gradient of the first part is 20 ÷ 8 = 2.5 m/s², the acceleration. A tutor asks your child what each area and gradient means in words, not only its value, because the H2 syllabus treats motion, forces and energy as threads that run through the whole course.

IP Physics Tuition: frequently asked questions
Does an IP student need Physics tuition without a Year 4 exam?
Not always. Many IP students manage their school's course well. Tuition helps when school tests show a pattern of lost marks, when a project or investigation crowds out core topics, or when your child finds application questions hard. Since H2 Physics assumes O-Level knowledge, Years 3 and 4 are the time to close gaps cheaply, before JC topics build on them.
How much does IP Physics tuition cost for Years 3 and 4?
IP Years 3 and 4 use our Upper Secondary rate band. Hourly rates are S$35 to S$45 for an undergraduate tutor, S$45 to S$65 for a full-time tutor and S$65 to S$95 for an ex-MOE teacher. Tell us the IP school when you ask, so we suggest tutors who know that course.
Can the tutor follow my child's IP school course?
Yes. There is no national IP syllabus for Years 3 and 4, so the tutor works from the school's notes, worksheets, test papers and project briefs. Share the school's scheme of work or the latest test at the start. The tutor keeps a list of topics taught and checks it against the G3 Physics syllabus, so nothing H2 assumes is missed.
My child moved into the IP at Sec 3. What should we watch for?
MOE allows students on the O-Level track who do well to apply to transfer into the IP at Secondary 3. A transfer student may meet a course that has already covered topics in a different order, or uses a different style of assessment. A tutor can map what the new school has covered against what your child knows, and fill the gaps in the first term.
