Where H1 Physics marks slip away
H1 Physics has fewer topics than H2, but its questions still expect A-Level reasoning. These are the patterns that show up in JC1 and JC2 scripts.
Uncertainty questions are guessed, because the student never learned when to add absolute uncertainties and when to add fractional or percentage ones.
In projectile questions the horizontal speed is put into the vertical equation, so the time of flight comes out wrong.
Momentum is conserved correctly in a collision, but kinetic energy is then assumed to be conserved too, which holds only for a perfectly elastic collision.
Potential divider questions with a thermistor or light-dependent resistor stall, because the student cannot say which way the output voltage moves as temperature or light changes.

The Section B question is started with 15 minutes left, so a 20-mark answer that links three topics is only half written.
These are method problems rather than gaps in effort, and each responds to a few weeks of targeted practice.

The 8867 syllabus, section by section
SEAB sets out H1 Physics in four sections. Your JC may teach them in a different order, so the tutor follows the lecture schedule and keeps all four in view for the A-Level.

- Random and systematic errors, and combining uncertainties
- Adding vectors and resolving them into perpendicular components
- Moments, couples and equilibrium with free-body diagrams
- Kinematics graphs and equations of uniformly accelerated motion
- Newton's laws of motion and linear momentum
- Energy stores, work, fields, power and efficiency
Mechanics
Real situations modelled with the foundations: thrown objects, collisions and orbits.
Topics covered
- Projectile motion and terminal velocity
- Gravitational potential energy near the Earth's surface
- Impulse as the area under a force-time graph
- Conservation of momentum in elastic and inelastic collisions

- The random nature of radioactive decay, activity and half-life
- Alpha, beta and gamma radiation
- Mass defect and nuclear binding energy

The H1 Physics exam, paper by paper
Both papers are compulsory. This is the format the SEAB syllabus sets for the 2027 A-Level.
SEAB weights knowledge with understanding at 45% and handling, applying and evaluating information at 55%, so more than half of the marks go to using physics in unfamiliar situations rather than recalling it.
| Paper | Time and marks | What is in it | Weighting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | 1 hour, 30 marks | 30 multiple-choice questions, each with four options | 33% |
| Paper 2, Section A | 60 of the paper's 80 marks | Structured questions, all compulsory, including one or two data-based questions worth 15 to 20 marks | Within Paper 2 |
| Paper 2, Section B | 20 marks | Two 20-mark questions, answer one. Each draws on several areas of the syllabus | Paper 2 in total: 2 hours, 67% |

Before you book an H1 Physics tutor
What JC parents usually ask before H1 Physics lessons begin.
| Question | For H1 Physics |
|---|---|
| Which tutor suits H1 Physics? | Look for a tutor who has taught the JC syllabus, not only O-Level, and who can show your child how a data-based question is answered and marked. Each profile lists the tutor's qualifications, experience and the levels taught, so you can check for A-Level Physics. |
| What does it cost? | H1 Physics sits in our Junior College band: S$45 to S$60 an hour with an undergraduate tutor, S$65 to S$90 with a full-time tutor and S$90 to S$130 with an ex-MOE teacher. A month of four 1.5-hour H1 Physics lessons with a full-time tutor comes to S$390 to S$540. |
| How does it start? | Tell us your child's JC, whether they are in JC1 or JC2, and the latest Physics result. We send 2 to 4 tutor profiles within 16 hours. The first lesson is a paid trial at the tutor's hourly rate. |
| What are the terms? | No contract and no minimum, so lessons can stop after the A-Level or pause around the promotional exams. Cancel or move a lesson at least 24 hours ahead, or it is charged. If the fit is wrong, we re-match you free. |

H1 Physics Tuition: a guide for parents
H1 Physics (SEAB syllabus 8867) takes four of the six sections in the A-Level Physics curriculum: Foundations of Physics, Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism, and Modern Physics. Across them sit eleven topics, from quantities and measurement through projectile motion, collisions and circular orbits, to currents, circuits, electromagnetism and nuclear physics. The 2027 syllabus assumes secondary Physics at G3 standard, studied as a single subject or within a combined science course. SEAB does not allow Physics at H1 and H2 in the same examination, so the level is settled in JC1 together with the rest of the subject combination. H1 suits a student who wants a physics grounding while their main subjects lie elsewhere.

An H1 Physics tutor works on the habits the two papers reward. Paper 1 is 30 multiple-choice questions in one hour, so speed with units, graphs and estimates matters. Paper 2 runs for two hours: compulsory structured questions in Section A, including one or two data-based questions worth 15 to 20 marks, and a choice of one 20-mark question in Section B that draws on several topics. Lessons repair weak secondary foundations, such as resolving vectors or applying circuit rules, before moving to JC questions. The tutor also teaches the command words SEAB uses, because show, estimate and determine each expect a different kind of answer.
A typical H1 Physics question: a ball is thrown horizontally at 12 m/s from a ledge 20 m above level ground. Ignoring air resistance and taking g as 9.81 m/s², how far from the base of the ledge does it land? The ball starts with no vertical velocity, so 20 = ½ × 9.81 × t², which gives t = 2.02 s. The horizontal velocity stays at 12 m/s, so the distance is 12 × 2.02 = 24.2 m.
The usual mistake is to put 12 m/s into the vertical equation. A tutor has your child set out two columns, horizontal and vertical, before writing any equation, then adds the follow-up the syllabus also expects: describe, using forces and energy, how air resistance would change the path.

H1 Physics Tuition: frequently asked questions
Who takes H1 Physics instead of H2?
Any JC student can take H1 Physics, provided Physics is not also taken at H2, since SEAB does not allow both in the same examination. The H1 sciences are designed to broaden a student's learning and support scientific literacy, while H2 prepares for further study in the subject. If a university course your child is considering lists Physics as a requirement, check which level it asks for before subject choices are final.
How is H1 Physics assessed?
Two compulsory papers. Paper 1 is one hour with 30 four-option multiple-choice questions and is worth 33%. Paper 2 is two hours and 80 marks, worth 67%. Its Section A has structured questions including one or two data-based questions, and Section B offers two 20-mark questions, of which your child answers one. A data and formulae page is printed in both papers.
Is H1 Physics simply a smaller H2?
It shares the same starting point. SEAB organises A-Level Physics into six sections and H1 takes four of them: Foundations, Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism, and Modern Physics. The questions are still A-Level questions, with data analysis and unfamiliar contexts. A student who found secondary Physics hard should expect to need early help with uncertainty, vectors and circuits.
When should my child start H1 Physics tuition?
Early in JC1 is most useful, while the foundations section is being taught, because uncertainty, vectors and energy reappear in every later topic. Students who start in JC2 can still make progress. The tutor then works from your child's promotional exam script to decide which topics to repair first and which to practise under timed conditions.
How much does H1 Physics Tuition Singapore cost?
Rates run S$45 to S$130 an hour, depending on the tutor: undergraduate tutors at the lower end, ex-MOE teachers at the upper end. You pay only the hourly rate on your tutor's shortlist.
