Where IB Physics students lose ground

The current course rewards understanding across themes, so a gap in one theme shows up in another. These are common signs in DP1 and DP2.

Uncertainties are left off results or combined the wrong way, though data questions and the investigation both depend on them.

Momentum and impulse problems go wrong at the sign, for example when a ball rebounds and its velocity changes direction.

Field questions mix up field strength with potential, because gravitational and electric fields were learned as two separate lists of formulas.

HL students reach induction or quantum physics with weak circuit and field foundations from DP1.

The research question for the investigation is too broad, so the data collected cannot answer it in the time available.

None of these needs a fresh start. They need a tutor who can see where the chain of ideas breaks.

IB Physics themes and what a tutor covers

The IB groups the syllabus in five themes. Some topics are for all students, some add HL content, and some are HL only. The tutor follows your school's order and marks which parts apply at SL.

A. Space, time and motion

Mechanics for every student, with two topics reserved for HL.

Topics covered
  • Kinematics
  • Forces and momentum
  • Work, energy and power
  • Rigid body mechanics (HL only)
  • Galilean and special relativity (HL only)

B. The particulate nature of matter

Thermal physics, gases and electric circuits.

Topics covered
  • Thermal energy transfers
  • Greenhouse effect
  • Gas laws
  • Thermodynamics (HL only)
  • Current and circuits

C and D. Wave behaviour and fields

Oscillations and waves, then gravitational, electric and magnetic fields.

Topics covered
  • Simple harmonic motion
  • Wave model and wave phenomena
  • Standing waves, resonance and the Doppler effect
  • Gravitational fields, and electric and magnetic fields
  • Motion in electromagnetic fields
  • Induction (HL only)

E. Nuclear and quantum physics

The atom and its nucleus, through to the physics of stars.

Topics covered
  • Structure of the atom
  • Quantum physics (HL only)
  • Radioactive decay
  • Fission
  • Fusion and stars

QuestionFor IB Physics
Which tutor suits IB Physics?Choose a tutor who has taught the course first assessed in 2025, since the themes and paper structure changed from the older syllabus. Check the profile for SL or HL experience, and ask whether the tutor has guided students through a science investigation.
What does it cost?IB Physics sits in our IB Diploma and IGCSE band: S$45 to S$60 an hour with an undergraduate tutor, S$65 to S$90 with a full-time tutor and S$90 to S$130 with an ex-MOE teacher. Four 1.5-hour IB Physics lessons with a full-time tutor come to S$390 to S$540.
How does it start?Tell us your child's school, DP year, SL or HL, and which theme feels hardest. We send 2 to 4 tutor profiles within 16 hours. The first lesson is a paid trial at the tutor's hourly rate.
What are the terms? No contract and no minimum, so you can add lessons before mocks and scale back afterwards. Cancel or move a lesson at least 24 hours ahead, or it is charged. If the fit is wrong, we re-match you free.

IB Physics Tuition: a guide for parents

IB Diploma Physics changed for students first assessed in 2025. The course is organised in five themes: space, time and motion, the particulate nature of matter, wave behaviour, fields, and nuclear and quantum physics. The IB recommends 150 teaching hours at SL and 240 at HL. HL students go further in shared topics and also take five topics that SL does not: rigid body mechanics, Galilean and special relativity, thermodynamics, induction, and quantum physics. The experimental programme takes 40 hours at SL and 60 at HL, and includes a collaborative sciences project with students of other sciences as well as an individual scientific investigation.

Read the full guide

IB Physics asks for more writing and more data handling than many students expect from a physics course. Paper 1B and Paper 2 rely on data, and the scientific investigation is a written report of up to 3,000 words on a research question your child sets. A tutor helps in three ways: building the mechanics and fields topics that later themes rest on, practising data questions with uncertainties and graphs, and coaching the inquiry process from a workable research question to an honest evaluation. The tutor guides method and physics, and the investigation stays your child's own work.

A data-style IB Physics question: a 0.060 kg tennis ball hits a wall at 20 m/s and rebounds along the same line at 15 m/s. Contact lasts 0.010 s. Find the impulse on the ball and the average force from the wall. Taking the rebound direction as positive, the change in momentum is 0.060 × (15 - (-20)) = 0.060 × 35 = 2.1 N s, so the average force is 2.1 ÷ 0.010 = 210 N.

Many students subtract the speeds and get 0.30 N s, a seventh of the right answer. A tutor makes your child write a sign convention before any number, then extends the question the IB way: if each speed was measured to plus or minus 1 m/s, how uncertain is the force?

IB Physics Tuition: frequently asked questions

Should my child take IB Physics at SL or HL?

HL covers the same themes in more depth and adds five HL-only topics, with 240 recommended teaching hours against 150 at SL. HL papers are also longer, 4.5 hours of exams in total against 3 hours at SL. If your child is aiming for engineering or a physical science at university, check each course's subject requirements before choosing, and talk to the school's IB coordinator.

How is IB Physics assessed?

External exams make up 80% of the grade. Paper 1 has two parts, multiple-choice questions in 1A and data-based questions in 1B, and counts for 36%. Paper 2, with short-answer and extended-response questions, counts for 44%. The remaining 20% is the internal assessment, a scientific investigation written up as a report of up to 3,000 words.

Can a tutor help with the IB Physics internal assessment?

Yes, within the rules. A tutor can teach how to frame a focused research question, choose and control variables, propagate uncertainties and write an evaluation, practising each on separate examples. The investigation itself must remain your child's work, supervised by the school's teacher. A careful tutor will say clearly where that line sits.

My child did IGCSE or O-Level Physics. How different is the IB course?

Some topics will feel familiar, such as kinematics, circuits and radioactivity. What changes is the depth and the style: IB questions ask your child to explain, handle data and link ideas across themes. HL also adds relativity and quantum physics, which are not in the IGCSE Physics syllabus. A tutor can map which DP1 topics build on what your child already knows.

How much does IB Physics Tuition Singapore cost?

Rates run S$45 to S$130 an hour, depending on the tutor: undergraduate tutors at the lower end, ex-MOE teachers at the upper end. You pay only the hourly rate on your tutor's shortlist.
