Where IGCSE Chemistry marks go

IGCSE Chemistry mixes recall, calculation and practical skill. These are the gaps that show up in school tests and mocks.

Formulae of ionic compounds are written with the wrong charges, so every equation after that is wrong too.

Extended students divide by the wrong molar mass, or forget the mole ratio from the balanced equation.

Electrolysis answers name the products at the wrong electrode.

Tests for ions and gases are half-remembered, such as the colour of a precipitate or the effect of a gas on damp litmus paper.

Organic questions on alkenes, alcohols and polymers are answered from general memory rather than the specific reactions in the syllabus.

A tutor turns each of these into short, regular checks so they are secure well before the exam.

What Extended adds in IGCSE Chemistry

Two examples from the Cambridge 0620 syllabus for 2026, 2027 and 2028, with the papers and grades for each route.

Both routes take one practical component, Paper 5 Practical Test or Paper 6 Alternative to Practical, each worth 40 marks and 20%.

QuestionFor IGCSE Chemistry
Which tutor suits IGCSE Chemistry?Choose a tutor who has taught Cambridge 0620 and can teach the mole to Extended standard, as well as the practical skills behind Paper 5 and Paper 6. Every profile we send shows the tutor's qualifications, teaching experience and which syllabuses they cover.
What does it cost?IGCSE Chemistry falls in our IB Diploma and IGCSE band: S$45 to S$60 an hour with an undergraduate tutor, S$65 to S$90 with a full-time tutor and S$90 to S$130 with an ex-MOE teacher. Four 1.5-hour IGCSE Chemistry lessons with a full-time tutor come to S$390 to S$540.
How does it start?Tell us the school, the exam year, Core or Extended, and which topics are weakest. We send 2 to 4 tutor profiles within 16 hours. The first lesson is a paid trial at the tutor's hourly rate.

IGCSE Chemistry Tuition: a guide for parents

Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry (0620) has twelve topics, running from states of matter, atoms and bonding through stoichiometry, electrochemistry, energetics and chemical reactions, to acids and salts, the Periodic Table, metals, chemistry of the environment, organic chemistry and experimental techniques. The syllabus in use covers exams in 2026, 2027 and 2028. Its latest version, published in August 2026, updated the assessment overview, and Cambridge states there are no substantial changes that would impact teaching. The 2029 syllabus is also published. Core candidates can achieve grades C to G, and Extended candidates, who also study the Supplement content, can achieve A* to G.

The biggest gap between Core and Extended in IGCSE Chemistry is the mole. Core students calculate reacting masses in simple proportions without the mole concept, while Extended students use moles, molar gas volume and the Avogadro constant. Equilibrium is similar: Core states that some reactions are reversible, and Extended predicts how temperature, pressure and concentration shift the position of equilibrium in the Haber and Contact processes. An IGCSE Chemistry tutor teaches to the route your child is entered for, keeps a running list of ionic formulae and test results to learn, and practises the practical component, which is worth 20%.

An Extended IGCSE Chemistry question: what mass of calcium oxide forms when 25.0 g of calcium carbonate is heated until it fully decomposes into calcium oxide and carbon dioxide? The relative formula mass of CaCO₃ is 100, so 25.0 g is 0.250 mol. One mole of CaCO₃ gives one mole of CaO, so 0.250 mol of CaO forms, and with a relative formula mass of 56 that is 14.0 g. The volume of carbon dioxide at room temperature and pressure follows too: 0.250 × 24 = 6.00 dm³.

A Core student meets the same reaction as a simple proportion: 100 g gives 56 g, so 25.0 g gives a quarter of that. A tutor teaches a three-line layout, moles then ratio then mass, so the method is visible to the examiner.

IGCSE Chemistry Tuition: frequently asked questions

Should my child take Core or Extended IGCSE Chemistry?

Talk to the school about entry. Cambridge advises Core for students expected to achieve grade D or below, since Core papers lead to grades C to G. Extended papers lead to A* to G and include Supplement content such as the mole. If your child is near the boundary, a tutor can work on the Supplement topics early so the Extended route stays open.

What changed in the 0620 syllabus in 2026?

Cambridge published version 2 of the 2026 to 2028 syllabus in August 2026. The change was an update to the assessment overview, and Cambridge states there are no substantial changes that would impact teaching. Textbooks endorsed for examination from 2023 remain suitable, so your child's current book and notes still apply.

What is the Alternative to Practical paper?

It is Paper 6, a one-hour written paper worth 40 marks and 20% of the grade, taken instead of Paper 5, the Practical Test of 1 hour 15 minutes. Both are based on the experimental skills in the syllabus. Students taking Paper 6 answer questions about experiments on paper, so they need to describe methods, record results in tables and suggest improvements.

What does the IGCSE Chemistry theory paper look like?

Core candidates sit Paper 3 and Extended candidates sit Paper 4. Each is 1 hour 15 minutes and 80 marks of short-answer and structured questions, worth 50% of the grade. This is where calculations, equations and explanations earn most of their marks, so it gets the most lesson time.

How much does IGCSE Chemistry Tuition Singapore cost?

Rates run S$45 to S$130 an hour, depending on the tutor: undergraduate tutors at the lower end, ex-MOE teachers at the upper end. You pay only the hourly rate on your tutor's shortlist.
