Where Sec 3 Chemistry trips students up
The first year of G3 Chemistry is mostly new language and new methods. These are the signs a student is struggling with them.
Formulae are guessed instead of worked out from ion charges, so aluminium oxide is written AlO instead of Al₂O₃.
Equations are balanced by changing the small numbers inside formulae instead of the numbers in front.
Dot-and-cross diagrams show sharing of electrons in an ionic compound such as sodium chloride.
Mole calculations jump straight to an answer without moles of the known substance, so ratios from the equation are missed.
1 more
Melting point answers talk about 'strong bonds' without saying which bonds or forces are broken.
Each of these blocks later topics, so Sec 3 is the right time to make them reliable.
Where the G3 Chemistry syllabus begins
G3 Chemistry has 12 topics in three sections. SEAB does not divide them between Sec 3 and Sec 4, and each school sets its own order. These are the opening topics in syllabus order. The tutor follows the school's scheme of work.

From Lower Secondary Science to Sec 3 Chemistry
How the chemistry in the G2/G3 Lower Secondary Science syllabus grows into G3 Chemistry.
The jump is in precision. A lower secondary answer could describe a change. A G3 answer has to show it in symbols and numbers.
| Idea | In Lower Secondary Science | In G3 Chemistry |
|---|---|---|
| Formulae | State the number and type of atoms in a given formula. Writing formulae is not required. | Deduce formulae from the charges on ions, and write formulae for compounds named in the syllabus. |
| Equations | Word equations for reactions such as combustion and neutralisation. | Balanced chemical equations with state symbols, and ionic equations. |
| Matter | Elements, compounds and mixtures, atoms and molecules. | Ionic, covalent and metallic bonding, used to explain melting point and conductivity. |
| Quantities | Mass is conserved when atoms are rearranged. | The mole, reacting masses, gas volumes and solution concentration. |
| Acids and alkalis | Acids, alkalis and indicators such as litmus and Universal Indicator. | Hydrogen and hydroxide ions, strong and weak acids, salt preparation and solubility rules. |

Before you book a Sec 3 Chemistry tutor
Common questions from parents in the first year of Chemistry.
| Question | For Secondary 3 |
|---|---|
| Which tutor suits Sec 3 Chemistry? | Choose a tutor who teaches G3 Chemistry often and explains bonding and the mole step by step, rather than giving answers to copy. If your child takes combined Science, mention it, as the Chemistry content is lighter. Profiles state each tutor's qualifications and experience, and which levels they cover. |
| What does it cost? | The Upper Secondary band applies: S$35 to S$45 an hour for an undergraduate tutor, S$45 to S$65 for a full-time tutor and S$65 to S$95 for an ex-MOE teacher. Four weekly 1.5-hour lessons with a full-time tutor cost S$270 to S$390 a month. |
| How does it start? | Share the school, Pure Chemistry or combined Science, and the latest Chemistry test. We send 2 to 4 tutor profiles within 16 hours. The first lesson is a paid trial at the tutor's hourly rate. |
| What are the terms? | No contract and no minimum, so you can book lessons just for the mole chapter if that is the gap. Cancel or move a lesson at least 24 hours ahead, or it is charged. If the fit is wrong, we re-match you free. |

Secondary 3 Chemistry Tuition: a guide for parents
Lower Secondary Science teaches chemistry through particles, mixtures and word equations. MOE's lower secondary syllabus even notes that writing chemical formulae is not required. Sec 3 G3 Chemistry changes that in the first weeks. Students deduce formulae from the charges on ions, write balanced equations with state symbols, and then use the mole to calculate masses and gas volumes. For a student in Sec 3 in 2027, the national exam is the SEC in 2028. The current published SEC syllabus is G3 Chemistry K324, which SEAB lists against the old O-Level code 6092 and which keeps the same content and papers.

A Sec 3 Chemistry tutor teaches at your child's pace, one-to-one at home or online, and follows the school's topic order. Most early lessons go into the language of chemistry: symbols, ion charges, formulae and equations, practised until they are automatic. Then come bonding and structure, where answers must link a property such as melting point or conductivity to the particles and the forces between them. The mole is taught with one clear method and a short set of steps. Practical work gets its own lessons too, because the practical paper is 20% of the grade and is built on techniques such as titration and salt preparation.
A typical Sec 3 mole question: 5.0 g of calcium carbonate reacts with excess dilute hydrochloric acid. What volume of carbon dioxide forms at room temperature and pressure? The balanced equation is CaCO₃(s) + 2HCl(aq) gives CaCl₂(aq) + H₂O(l) + CO₂(g). The Mr of CaCO₃ is 40 + 12 + 3 × 16 = 100, so 5.0 g is 0.050 mol. The equation gives 1 mol of CO₂ for every 1 mol of CaCO₃, so 0.050 mol of gas forms, and at 24 dm³ per mole that is 1.2 dm³.
Common errors are using the 2 in front of HCl as the ratio, or skipping moles and scaling grams. A tutor teaches the same four lines every time: equation, moles of the known, mole ratio, then convert to the unit asked for.

TSS stands out compared to other agencies I’ve tried. Everything was smooth from finding a tutor to starting lessons.
Tss is very outstanding compared to other tuition centre as they are very patient with the engagement i had with them.

I’ve tried other tuition agencies before, but TSS is definitely the one I’d recommend. The service is much better.

Secondary 3 Chemistry Tuition: frequently asked questions
Pure Chemistry or Combined Science: what is the difference in Sec 3?
Your school decides which subjects and combinations it offers. Pure Chemistry at G3 has three papers of its own. In G3 combined Science, Chemistry is one 65-mark structured paper, taken alongside Physics or Biology, with a shared multiple-choice paper and a practical test. At G2, science is offered only as combined Science. Our Combined Science tuition page covers that route.
How much does Secondary 3 Chemistry tuition cost?
Sec 3 Chemistry uses our Upper Secondary band. Per hour, an undergraduate tutor is S$35 to S$45, a full-time tutor S$45 to S$65 and an ex-MOE teacher S$65 to S$95. One 1.5-hour lesson a week is common in Sec 3, with extra sessions before the school's end-of-year exam if needed.
Why is the mole so hard in Sec 3?
The mole links three things students have only just learnt: formulae, balanced equations and relative masses. If any one is shaky, the calculation fails. The syllabus also adds gas volumes, concentration in mol/dm³, limiting reactants, percentage yield and purity. A tutor teaches one set of steps for every question type and checks each step before moving on.
What lab techniques does Sec 3 Chemistry need?
SEAB's syllabus expects students to have met acid-base titration with indicators such as methyl orange, rates experiments, separation techniques, salt preparation, gas collection, and qualitative analysis of cations, anions and gases. Most of these begin in Sec 3. A tutor at home teaches the reasoning, such as why a salt is made by titration or by adding excess solid, and how to record results properly.
