Signs an IP Chemistry student needs support in Years 3 and 4

IP Chemistry courses can move quickly, and with no Year 4 national exam some gaps go unnoticed.

Ionic equations and formulae are still unreliable, even though the school course has moved on to new topics.

Structure and bonding answers describe properties without linking them to particles and forces.

Mole calculations work only when the question looks like a familiar one.

Lab write-ups or investigations score well, but written tests on core content do not.

Your child is unsure what H2 Chemistry will expect, and school tests do not say.

Years 3 and 4 are the time to make the basics automatic, while there is still room in the timetable.

The Chemistry base that H2 assumes

Each IP school orders and extends its own Chemistry course. Because H2 Chemistry assumes O-Level knowledge, the tutor uses the G3 Chemistry syllabus as the checklist for Years 3 and 4 and teaches it in the school's order.

  • Organic families, reactions and polymers

What is fixed and what the IP school decides

IP Chemistry in Years 3 and 4 is set by each school. This table separates that from what MOE and SEAB fix. We do not describe any one school's course.

So the question for an IP family is not whether the school follows K324, but whether your child is secure in the ground it covers.

Before you book an IP Chemistry tutor

What IP parents ask before Chemistry tuition in Years 3 and 4.

QuestionFor IP Years 3 and 4
Which tutor suits IP Chemistry?Look for a tutor who can work from your school's own materials and also explain where a topic leads in H2. A tutor who teaches both upper secondary and JC Chemistry is useful here. Qualifications, experience and levels taught are listed on every profile we send.
What does it cost?IP Years 3 and 4 are priced in the Upper Secondary band: S$35 to S$45 an hour with an undergraduate tutor, S$45 to S$65 with a full-time tutor and S$65 to S$95 with an ex-MOE teacher. Six 1.5-hour lessons across a school term with a full-time tutor total S$405 to S$585.
How does it start?Tell us the IP school, the year, and the Chemistry topics or test results that worry you. We send 2 to 4 tutor profiles within 16 hours. The first lesson is a paid trial at the tutor's hourly rate.
What are the terms? No contract and no minimum, so you can pause during heavy project weeks. Cancel or move a lesson at least 24 hours ahead, or it is charged. If the fit is wrong, we re-match you free.

IP Chemistry Tuition: a guide for parents

IP schools set their own Chemistry course for Years 3 and 4, because their students skip the SEC in Secondary 4. MOE says each IP school's programme is unique, so the topics, order and tests differ from school to school. No national syllabus covers IP Years 3 and 4, and we do not describe one. What links them is where the IP goes. MOE describes it as a six-year course to the A-Level, though some schools offer the IB Diploma or the NUS High School Diploma instead.

The H2 Chemistry syllabus (9476) states that candidates are assumed to have knowledge and understanding of Chemistry at O-Level. It also says O-Level students have met the particle idea of matter and the simple atomic model of electrons in shells.

An IP Chemistry tutor therefore works from two documents at once. One is your child's school material: notes, worksheets, lab write-ups and returned tests. The other is the G3 Chemistry syllabus, used as a checklist of the ground H2 assumes. Gaps in formula writing, bonding diagrams and mole calculations rarely show in a school course that moves quickly, but they slow down H2 topics such as stoichiometry, chemical energetics and equilibria. The tutor fixes those gaps in Years 3 and 4, while still helping with the school's own tasks, which can include open-ended investigations and project work.

An IP Chemistry tutor often uses a structure question to test the base: explain why sodium chloride has a high melting point and conducts electricity when molten but not when solid. A full answer has three linked parts. Sodium chloride is a giant ionic lattice with strong electrostatic attraction between Na⁺ and Cl⁻ ions, so a lot of energy is needed to overcome it, giving a high melting point. In the solid, the ions are held in fixed positions and cannot move.

When molten, the ions are free to move and carry charge. Many students write 'strong bonds' or say 'electrons move', which loses the marks. Linking a property to particles and forces is exactly the habit the H2 Chemistry core idea of structure and properties expects from day one.

IP Chemistry Tuition: frequently asked questions

Does an IP student need Chemistry tuition before JC?

Only if something shows it. Signs include repeated errors in formulae or mole work, low scores on written tests despite good lab work, or a course that has moved past topics your child never fully understood. H2 Chemistry assumes O-Level knowledge, so a gap in Year 3 or 4 becomes a bigger problem when H2 topics build on it in Year 5.

How much does IP Chemistry tuition cost?

For IP Years 3 and 4 we use the Upper Secondary rate band: S$35 to S$45 an hour for an undergraduate tutor, S$45 to S$65 for a full-time tutor and S$65 to S$95 for an ex-MOE teacher. Lesson length and frequency are up to you, and many IP families book lessons only in the terms that need them.

Will the tutor teach my child's school syllabus or the SEC one?

Your school's course comes first, since that is what your child is tested on. There is no national IP syllabus for Years 3 and 4, so the tutor works from the school's notes and papers. The G3 Chemistry syllabus is used as a checklist in the background, to confirm that every topic H2 assumes has been covered somewhere.

What does H2 Chemistry build on?

The H2 Chemistry syllabus says O-Level students have met the particle idea of matter and the simple atomic model with electrons in shells, which supports stoichiometry and thermochemistry. Its core ideas cover structure and properties, and transformation through reactions and energy. Secure bonding, formulae and mole work in Years 3 and 4 make those H2 topics far easier to start.
