Where H1 Chemistry gets hard
H1 Chemistry moves quickly from O-Level ideas to JC reasoning. These are the struggles that appear most often in JC1 and JC2.
Shapes of molecules are memorised as a list, so an unfamiliar molecule analogous to SF6 or NH3 cannot be worked out from its electron pairs.
pH questions on strong bases stall, because the student does not know how to use Kw to get from [OH⁻] to [H⁺].
Rate equations are written from the balanced equation instead of from initial-rates data.
Le Chatelier answers state the shift but not the reason, or claim that a catalyst changes the equilibrium constant.
1 more
Organic reactions are learned without reagents and conditions, which the syllabus expects students to quote, such as aqueous NaOH under reflux.
Each of these traces back to a concept that can be rebuilt, not to a lack of memory work.

H1 Chemistry exam at a glance
The 2027 scheme of assessment from the SEAB syllabus. Both papers are compulsory.
SEAB publishes a Data Booklet for H1 and H2 Chemistry, and the syllabus refers to it for values such as ionisation energies, so the tutor trains your child to find values quickly rather than memorise them.
| Component | Format | Marks and weighting |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | 1 hour. 30 compulsory multiple-choice questions with four options, four to six of them multiple completion | 30 marks, 33% |
| Paper 2, Section A | Structured questions, all compulsory, with data-based questions worth 15 to 20 marks | 60 marks |
| Paper 2, Section B | Answer one of two questions that integrate different areas of the syllabus | 20 marks. Paper 2 in total: 80 marks in 2 hours, 67% |
| Assessment objectives | A: knowledge with understanding. B: handling, applying and evaluating information | A 45%, B 55% |

H1 Chemistry Tuition: a guide for parents
H1 Chemistry (SEAB syllabus 8873) is built on three Core Ideas: Matter, Structure and Properties, and Transformation. Under them sit eight topics, from atomic structure and chemical bonding to the mole, thermochemistry, reaction kinetics and chemical equilibria, with a full topic on theories of acids and bases. An extension topic, Polymers and Organic Chemistry, applies these ideas to materials such as plastics and proteins and to a set of simple organic reactions. The syllabus assumes O-Level Chemistry, as a single subject or within a combined science course, and SEAB does not allow Chemistry at H1 and H2 together. It suits a student who wants chemistry in the combination without taking it at H2.
Read the full guide
An H1 Chemistry tutor focuses on the reasoning behind the calculations. SEAB says the syllabus puts less emphasis on factual material and more on understanding and applying concepts, and the weighting shows it: 55% of the marks test handling, applying and evaluating information. Lessons connect bonding to physical properties, the Boltzmann distribution to reaction rate, and Le Chatelier's Principle to the Haber process, so that an unfamiliar context in Paper 2 does not feel new. The tutor also drills the quantitative details that cost marks, including significant figures, which the syllabus says answers must reflect.
A short H1 Chemistry calculation: find the pH of 0.020 mol dm⁻³ sodium hydroxide at 25 °C, where Kw is 1.0 × 10⁻¹⁴ mol² dm⁻⁶. Sodium hydroxide is a strong base, so [OH⁻] = 0.020 mol dm⁻³. Then [H⁺] = Kw ÷ [OH⁻] = 1.0 × 10⁻¹⁴ ÷ 0.020 = 5.0 × 10⁻¹³ mol dm⁻³, and pH = -lg(5.0 × 10⁻¹³) = 12.30. Students often write pH = -lg 0.020 = 1.70 and forget that an alkali must have a pH above 7.
A tutor teaches a quick sense check at the end of every acid-base answer, then moves to the idea the syllabus builds next: why a weak base of the same concentration has a lower pH, because it is only partly dissociated.

H1 Chemistry Tuition: frequently asked questions
Is H1 Chemistry a sensible choice for my child?
It depends on the combination. H1 sciences are built to broaden learning and scientific literacy, while H2 prepares students for further study of the subject. H1 Chemistry suits a student who wants chemistry alongside other main subjects. If a university course your child is considering names Chemistry as a prerequisite, check the level it requires before JC1 subject choices close.
How is H1 Chemistry examined?
Paper 1 lasts one hour and has 30 compulsory multiple-choice questions, four to six of them of the multiple completion type, worth 33%. Paper 2 lasts two hours, carries 80 marks and is worth 67%. Section A has structured and data-based questions, all compulsory. In Section B your child answers one of two 20-mark questions that combine different topics.
Does H1 Chemistry include organic chemistry?
Yes, as the extension topic Polymers and Organic Chemistry. It covers functional groups, isomerism, and reactions of alkanes, alkenes, halogenoalkanes, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones and carboxylic acids, using ethane, ethene, bromoethane, ethanol, ethanal, propanone and ethanoic acid as examples. It ends with the structure and uses of polymers, which links back to bonding and intermolecular forces.
What carries over from O-Level Chemistry?
The mole, simple bonding and the idea of reaction rate all return, in more depth. Atomic structure now includes orbitals and ionisation energies, rate becomes rate equations and the Boltzmann distribution, and equilibrium gains a constant, Kc. A student with a weak O-Level grade benefits from closing those gaps in the first term of JC1.
How much does H1 Chemistry Tuition Singapore cost?
Rates run S$45 to S$130 an hour, depending on the tutor: undergraduate tutors at the lower end, ex-MOE teachers at the upper end. You pay only the hourly rate on your tutor's shortlist.
