Why IGCSE Biology marks are lost

IGCSE Biology covers a lot of ground, and marks often go on wording rather than knowledge. Watch for these signs.

Magnification answers use the wrong units or put image size and actual size the wrong way round in the formula.

Osmosis is explained without a partially permeable membrane or the direction of water movement.

Enzyme answers say the enzyme is 'killed' at high temperature instead of denatured.

Inheritance questions skip the genetic diagram, so the working behind a ratio cannot be followed.

1 more

Food chain answers mix up the flow of energy with the cycling of nutrients.

Each of these is a habit of language, and a tutor can correct it question by question.

IGCSE Biology Tuition: a guide for parents

Cambridge IGCSE Biology (0610) is a broad course of 21 topics, from the characteristics and classification of living organisms through cells, enzymes, nutrition and transport, to diseases and immunity, coordination, reproduction, inheritance, ecology and biotechnology. The current syllabus covers exams in 2026, 2027 and 2028, and version 3, published in August 2026, updated the assessment overview. Cambridge has also published the 2029 syllabus and says it has no significant changes which affect teaching. Core candidates can achieve grades C to G. Extended candidates also study the Supplement content and can achieve A* to G.

With 21 topics, IGCSE Biology rewards steady revision more than a late rush. An IGCSE Biology tutor helps your child build precise definitions, label and interpret diagrams, and handle the calculations the syllabus includes, such as magnification. For Extended students, lessons add Supplement content like the structure of a nephron and the events at a synapse. The practical component is worth 20%, so the tutor practises line drawings of specimens, results tables and improvements to methods. Students taking the Alternative to Practical paper need this most, since they answer about experiments on paper.

A Core IGCSE Biology calculation: a drawing of a cell is 30 mm long, and the cell's actual length is 0.015 mm. What is the magnification? Using magnification = image size ÷ actual size, the answer is 30 ÷ 0.015 = ×2000. Extended candidates may be given the actual size as 15 µm instead, so they must convert first: 15 µm is 0.015 mm, because there are 1,000 µm in 1 mm. Common mistakes are dividing the wrong way round, mixing units, or writing a unit after the magnification.

A tutor drills the formula until your child can rearrange it to find the actual size of a specimen, which the syllabus also asks for, and checks that every answer is sensible for a cell.

IGCSE Biology Tuition: frequently asked questions

How is IGCSE Biology examined?

All candidates take three components. The multiple-choice paper is 45 minutes, 40 questions and 30%. The theory paper is 1 hour 15 minutes, 80 marks and 50%. The practical component is either the Practical Test, 1 hour 15 minutes, or the Alternative to Practical, 1 hour, each 40 marks and 20%. Core and Extended candidates sit different multiple-choice and theory papers.

What extra does Extended IGCSE Biology include?

Extended candidates study Supplement content in addition to the Core in most topics. Examples include converting between millimetres and micrometres when finding the size of specimens, the structure and function of a nephron, deamination in the liver, and the events at a synapse. Extended papers lead to grades A* to G, while Core papers lead to C to G.

Has the IGCSE Biology syllabus changed?

The 2026 to 2028 syllabus is now on version 3, published in August 2026, which updated the assessment overview. The 2029 syllabus, published in September 2026, has no significant changes which affect teaching, and textbooks endorsed for examination from 2023 are still suitable. Your child can keep using current notes and books.

Can a tutor help with the IGCSE Biology practical paper?

Yes. The practical component is worth 20%, and both options test the same experimental skills. A tutor practises planning an investigation, choosing what to keep constant, making clear line drawings of specimens with magnification, and presenting results in tables and graphs. Students taking the Alternative to Practical need this practice most.

How much does IGCSE Biology Tuition Singapore cost?

Rates run S$45 to S$130 an hour, depending on the tutor: undergraduate tutors at the lower end, ex-MOE teachers at the upper end. You pay only the hourly rate on your tutor's shortlist.
