Where Sec 3 Biology catches students out
Sec 3 Biology has a lot to learn, but marks are mostly lost in how answers are written.
Osmosis is described as water moving 'from high to low concentration' without saying water potential or a partially permeable membrane.
Enzyme answers say the enzyme 'dies' at high temperature, instead of saying the active site changes shape and the enzyme is denatured.
Food test answers name the reagent but not the colour change, or skip heating with Benedict's solution.
Questions on a villus or an alveolus list features without linking each one to how it helps absorption or gas exchange.
1 more
Biological drawings are shaded, sketched with broken lines, or missing a stated magnification.
Each of these is about precise biological language, which is easiest to build in the first year.
Where the G3 Biology syllabus begins
G3 Biology has 14 topics in four themes. SEAB does not fix which are taught in Sec 3, and schools choose their own order. The opening topics in syllabus order are below. The tutor follows your child's scheme of work.

Movement of substances
How materials enter and leave cells.
Topics covered
- Diffusion in nutrient uptake and gas exchange
- Osmosis and its effects on plant and animal tissues
- Active transport against a concentration gradient
- Ion uptake by root hairs
- Glucose uptake by cells in the villi
Biological molecules and enzymes
What living things are made of, and how enzymes speed up reactions.
Topics covered
- Elements in carbohydrates, fats and proteins
- Roles of carbohydrates, fats and proteins
- Tests for starch, reducing sugars, protein and fats

Nutrition and transport in humans
The first human systems in the syllabus, studied as structure linked to function.
Topics covered
- Parts of the digestive system and peristalsis
- Digestive enzymes such as amylase, protease and lipase
- The villus, hepatic portal vein and roles of the liver
- Arteries, veins and capillaries
- Blood components and ABO blood groups
- The heart, the cardiac cycle and coronary heart disease
What changes from Lower Secondary Science to Sec 3 Biology
The same systems come back in Sec 3, studied in more detail and with more exact terms. This table compares the G2/G3 Lower Secondary Science syllabus with G3 Biology.
Students who took G2 Science may not have met outcomes such as osmosis at the roots, so the tutor checks them early in Sec 3.
| Idea | In Lower Secondary Science | In G3 Biology |
|---|---|---|
| Enzymes | Only classes of enzymes, such as carbohydrases, proteases and lipases. Specific names are not required. | Named enzymes, the active site, enzyme specificity and the effects of temperature and pH. |
| Cells | Parts of typical plant and animal cells. | Organelles identified from electron micrographs, and specialised cells linked to function. |
| Movement of water | Osmosis helps water absorption at the roots, a G3 outcome that is optional at G2. | Osmosis defined and investigated in plant and animal tissues, plus active transport. |
| Digestion | How the main parts of the digestive system work together. | Peristalsis, the villus, the hepatic portal vein and the roles of the liver. |
| Transport | Diffusion moves substances in plants and humans. | Blood vessels, blood components, the heart and the cardiac cycle. |

Before you book a Sec 3 Biology tutor
What parents ask when Biology starts as a full subject.
| Question | For Secondary 3 |
|---|---|
| Which tutor suits Sec 3 Biology? | Look for a tutor who teaches G3 Biology and corrects the wording of answers, not only the facts. If your child takes combined Science, mention it, as the Biology content is smaller. You can compare qualifications, experience and levels taught across the profiles. |
| What does it cost? | The Upper Secondary band covers Sec 3: S$35 to S$45 an hour with an undergraduate tutor, S$45 to S$65 with a full-time tutor and S$65 to S$95 with an ex-MOE teacher. Four 1.5-hour lessons with an undergraduate tutor come to S$210 to S$270 a month. |
| How does it start? | Tell us the school, Pure Biology or combined Science, and the latest Biology test. We send 2 to 4 tutor profiles within 16 hours. The first lesson is a paid trial at the tutor's hourly rate. |
| What are the terms? | No contract and no minimum, so lessons can begin before the first common test of the year. Cancel or move a lesson at least 24 hours ahead, or it is charged. If the fit is wrong, we re-match you free. |

Secondary 3 Biology Tuition: a guide for parents
Sec 3 Biology starts where Lower Secondary Science left off, then goes much deeper. In lower secondary, students learn that the digestive system breaks food down, and MOE's syllabus says only classes of enzymes are needed, not their names. G3 Biology names amylase, maltase, protease and lipase, and asks how an enzyme works at its active site. Cells move from a labelled diagram to organelles in electron micrographs. A student starting Sec 3 in 2027 sits the national exam, the SEC, in 2028. The current published SEC syllabus is G3 Biology K325, which keeps the content and papers of O-Level Biology 6093.

Biology looks like a reading subject, so many students rely on memorising notes. The marks, though, go to precise explanation: a villus is suited to absorption because of its large surface area, thin wall and dense capillaries, each linked to how it helps. A Sec 3 Biology tutor teaches your child to answer in that cause-and-effect form, using the terms the syllabus uses. Lessons are one-to-one, at home or online, and follow the school's topic order. The tutor also covers the practical skills of the first year, such as food tests, investigating osmosis and clear labelled drawings with the magnification stated.
A typical Sec 3 osmosis question gives a table: potato strips were left in sucrose solutions of 0.0, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6 mol/dm³, and the percentage change in mass was +12%, +4%, −3% and −9%. Students are asked to explain the results and estimate where there is no change. In 0.0 mol/dm³, the strip gains mass because water enters the cells by osmosis through the partially permeable membrane. In 0.6 mol/dm³, water leaves the cells and the strip loses mass.
No change happens where the line crosses zero on a graph, between 0.2 and 0.4 mol/dm³. Common errors are saying sucrose moves into the cells, or reading the estimate from the table without plotting. A tutor teaches your child to plot the graph, then explain each result in terms of water movement.

Secondary 3 Biology Tuition: frequently asked questions
Pure Biology or Combined Science in Sec 3: which is my child taking?
Check the school's subject letter, as schools decide the combinations they offer. Pure Biology at G3 has its own three papers. In G3 combined Science, Biology is one 65-mark structured paper, taken with Physics or Chemistry, plus a shared multiple-choice paper and practical. Science at G2 is offered only as combined Science. Our Combined Science tuition page covers that path.
How much does Secondary 3 Biology tuition cost?
Sec 3 Biology is in our Upper Secondary band, with hourly rates of S$35 to S$45 for an undergraduate tutor, S$45 to S$65 for a full-time tutor and S$65 to S$95 for an ex-MOE teacher. A weekly 1.5-hour lesson, at home or online, suits most students in Sec 3.
Is Sec 3 Biology just memorising?
No. Recall matters, but the syllabus says it puts less emphasis on factual material and much greater emphasis on understanding and applying concepts. Questions ask students to explain, predict and interpret unfamiliar data. A tutor teaches the key terms and then practises using them in explanations, such as linking each feature of an alveolus to faster gas exchange.
What practical work does Sec 3 Biology include?
The syllabus lists food tests, enzyme experiments, work with indicators such as hydrogencarbonate indicator and cobalt(II) chloride paper, safe use of scalpels and forceps, measurements with simple instruments, and clear line drawings with magnification. Many of these start in Sec 3. A tutor can drill the written parts at home: predictions, results tables, drawings and explanations of errors.
