Why H1 Biology feels harder than O-Level
A-Level Biology moves from organs and systems to cells and molecules. These are the problems that follow from that shift.
Protein structure answers list primary to quaternary structure but never name the bonds that hold each level in shape.
Enzyme graphs are described but not explained, so the marks for active site, collisions and denaturation are lost.
Mitosis and meiosis are confused when a question asks about chromosome number or variation.
Dihybrid crosses go wrong because gametes are written down before the alleles have been separated properly.
1 more
Climate change questions get general answers about pollution instead of the greenhouse gases and effects the syllabus names.
Each one improves when the student learns to link a structure to its function in every answer.

H1 and H2 Biology: what is shared and what is not
SEAB's A-Level Biology curriculum framework marks which areas are for H2 and H3 only. Everything else in the framework is in H1.
H1 Biology is assessed in two papers: Paper 1, one hour of 30 multiple-choice questions (33%), and Paper 2, two hours and 60 marks (67%), with a free-response choice in Section B.
| Core Idea or topic | In H1 Biology | H2 and H3 only |
|---|---|---|
| The Cell and Biomolecules of Life | Organelles, biomolecules and cellular transport, proteins, stem cells | No separate areas |
| Genetics and Inheritance | Nucleic acids and gene expression, DNA mutations, the cell cycle, inheritance | Organisation of genomes, control of gene expression |
| Energy | Energy transformation between the environment and organisms | Communication and equilibrium in organisms |
| Biological Evolution | Natural selection, adaptation, and the biological concept of the species | Speciation |
| Extension topics | Impact of climate change on animals and plants | Infectious diseases |

Before you book an H1 Biology tutor
What parents ask before H1 Biology lessons begin.
| Question | For H1 Biology |
|---|---|
| Which tutor suits H1 Biology? | Pick a tutor who teaches A-Level Biology and knows the 8876 syllabus, including the climate change extension. Each profile lists the tutor's qualifications, experience and the levels taught, so you can confirm JC Biology experience before the first lesson. |
| What does it cost? | H1 Biology falls in our Junior College band: S$45 to S$60 an hour with an undergraduate tutor, S$65 to S$90 with a full-time tutor and S$90 to S$130 with an ex-MOE teacher. Four 1.5-hour H1 Biology lessons with a full-time tutor total S$390 to S$540. |
| How does it start? | Let us know your child's JC, JC1 or JC2, and the topics or paper sections that lose the most marks. We send 2 to 4 tutor profiles within 16 hours. The first lesson is a paid trial at the tutor's hourly rate. |
| What are the terms? | No contract and no minimum, so lessons can run through JC2 and end when the A-Level does. Cancel or move a lesson at least 24 hours ahead, or it is charged. If the fit is wrong, we re-match you free. |

H1 Biology Tuition: a guide for parents
H1 Biology (SEAB syllabus 8876) is designed as a subset of H2 Biology and is studied at the cellular and molecular level. It has four Core Ideas: the cell and biomolecules of life, genetics and inheritance, energy, and biological evolution. An extension topic on the impact of climate change on animals and plants takes about 15% of the curriculum and includes how global warming affects the spread of dengue. The syllabus assumes O-Level Biology, and SEAB does not allow Biology at H1 and H2 in the same examination. Several H2 areas, such as communication and equilibrium in organisms and infectious diseases, are not part of H1.

An H1 Biology tutor works on precision and argument. Paper 2 rewards students who can read unfamiliar data and then explain it in exact biological terms, and its free-response question gives part of the marks for the quality of scientific argument and written communication. Lessons move from structure to function, for example from the shape of an enzyme's active site to the effect of temperature and pH on rate, and from meiosis to dihybrid crosses. The tutor also prepares your child for questions on the extension topic, where climate data and real cases replace textbook diagrams.
A typical H1 Biology genetics task: in a plant, round seeds (R) are dominant to wrinkled (r) and yellow (Y) is dominant to green (y), with the two genes on different chromosomes. Two plants heterozygous at both loci, RrYy, are crossed and give 160 offspring. How many of each phenotype are expected? Each parent makes four gamete types in equal numbers, RY, Ry, rY and ry, because of independent assortment in meiosis.
A 4 by 4 Punnett square gives a 9:3:3:1 ratio of round yellow, round green, wrinkled yellow and wrinkled green, so 90, 30, 30 and 10 plants. Students often write only two gamete types per parent. A tutor has your child list the gametes first and link them back to meiosis, since the syllabus ties inheritance to how chromosomes separate.

H1 Biology Tuition: frequently asked questions
What does H1 Biology leave out compared with H2?
H1 Biology is distilled from H2 and shares its four Core Ideas, but several areas are for H2 and H3 only. These include the organisation of genomes, control of gene expression, communication and equilibrium in organisms, and the infectious diseases extension topic. H1 keeps the climate change extension topic, which takes about 15% of its curriculum.
How is H1 Biology examined?
Paper 1 is one hour of 30 compulsory multiple-choice questions, worth 33%. Paper 2 is two hours, 60 marks and 67%. Section A has 45 marks of compulsory structured questions, with 10 to 15 marks of data-based or comprehension questions. Section B is a choice of one of two free-response questions for 15 marks, where part of the credit goes to scientific argument and written communication.
Is the climate change topic examined?
Yes. It is the H1 extension topic. Students need the human activities behind rising greenhouse gases, limited to carbon dioxide and methane, the effects of climate change on sea levels, weather and ecosystems, and dengue as a disease whose spread global warming affects. Paper 2 tests data handling, so a tutor practises reading graphs and maps alongside the content.
How does a tutor improve H1 Biology answers?
By teaching a fixed order for explanations: name the structure, state its feature, then link it to the function or the result. Paper 2 needs exact terms such as active site, peptide bond or independent assortment, not everyday words. The tutor marks practice answers against that standard and shows where a vague phrase lost the mark.
How much does H1 Biology Tuition Singapore cost?
Rates run S$45 to S$130 an hour, depending on the tutor: undergraduate tutors at the lower end, ex-MOE teachers at the upper end. You pay only the hourly rate on your tutor's shortlist.
