What costs marks in Sec 4 Biology

In the exam year, the content is familiar, but the long answers and data questions decide the grade.

Genetic diagrams skip steps, such as gametes or parental genotypes, so method marks are lost even when the ratio is right.

Free-response answers are written as a story, with no clear points, and run out of time before the last part.

Data-based questions are answered from memory instead of from the graph or table given.

Photosynthesis answers name limiting factors but do not say which factor limits the rate at each part of the graph.

1 more

Reproduction answers confuse mitosis and meiosis, or haploid and diploid.

These are writing and reading skills, and they improve fastest with marked timed practice.

The later themes of the G3 Biology syllabus

Schools order topics their own way, so these are the later syllabus topics in SEAB's order, not a fixed Sec 4 list. The exam draws on all 14 topics, and Sec 3 revision continues.

The G3 Biology papers in the 2027 SEC

Candidates sit all three papers. This is SEAB's scheme of assessment for G3 Biology, syllabus K325.

SEAB set out the same three papers for O-Level Biology 6093 in 2026, so school practice from earlier cohorts still matches the format.

PaperWhat it containsTime and marksWeighting
Paper 1, Multiple Choice40 compulsory multiple-choice items.1 h, 40 marks30%
Paper 2, Structured and Free ResponseSection A: compulsory structured questions for 70 marks, ending with one free-response and one data-based question worth 20 marks together. The data-based question is 8 to 12 marks. Section B: answer one of two free-response questions for 10 marks.1 h 45 min, 80 marks50%
Paper 3, PracticalTwo to three compulsory practical questions, mainly testing experimental skills. One or more may assess planning.1 h 50 min, 40 marks20%

What families ask before Biology tuition in the exam year.

QuestionFor Secondary 4
Which tutor suits Sec 4 Biology?Choose a tutor who marks free-response answers closely and is quick with genetics and data questions. For a late start, a full-time tutor or an ex-MOE teacher with recent exam-year students works well. Look at the qualifications, experience and levels taught on each profile we send.
What does it cost?Sec 4 is in the Upper Secondary band: S$35 to S$45 an hour with an undergraduate tutor, S$45 to S$65 with a full-time tutor and S$65 to S$95 with an ex-MOE teacher. Eight 1-hour lessons a month with a full-time tutor add up to S$360 to S$520.
How does it start?Send the school, the latest Biology result and the topics your child avoids. We send 2 to 4 tutor profiles within 16 hours. The first lesson is a paid trial at the tutor's hourly rate.
What are the terms? No contract and no minimum, so tuition can stop after the final paper. Cancel or move a lesson at least 24 hours ahead, or it is charged. If the fit is wrong, we re-match you free.

Secondary 4 Biology Tuition: a guide for parents

The 2027 Sec 4 cohort sits Biology in the new Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate. At G3 the syllabus is K325, listed by SEAB against the old O-Level Biology code 6093. Read side by side, the 2027 K325 document and the 2026 6093 document have the same fourteen topics and the same three papers, marks and weightings, so past O-Level Biology papers stay useful. The G3 grade runs from A1 to 9. The written papers fall in one common SEC exam period starting in October, and MOE has said results are released the following January.

Sec 4 Biology rewards students who can write a connected explanation under time pressure. Paper 2 closes Section A with a free-response question and a data-based question, and Section B gives a choice of two free-response questions. A Sec 4 Biology tutor practises both kinds: planning a free-response answer in points before writing it, and reading graphs and tables of unfamiliar data before answering. Genetics needs its own drill, because genetic diagrams must be set out in full to earn the marks. Revision across all fourteen topics runs alongside the school's last chapters, so nothing from Sec 3 is left until the final weeks.

A common Sec 4 genetics question: in a plant, the allele for tall stems (T) is dominant to the allele for short stems (t). Two heterozygous tall plants are crossed and produce 100 offspring, 70 tall and 30 short. Use a genetic diagram to explain the expected ratio, and suggest why the observed numbers differ.

The full diagram shows parental phenotypes, genotypes Tt × Tt, gametes T and t from each parent, a Punnett square giving TT, Tt, Tt and tt, and offspring phenotypes in a 3 tall : 1 short ratio, so 75 tall and 25 short are expected. The difference is due to chance in fertilisation, which matters more in small samples. A tutor makes your child write every line of the diagram, because each line can carry a mark.

Secondary 4 Biology Tuition: frequently asked questions

Is SEC Biology the same as O-Level Biology?

In content and format, yes, for G3. SEAB's 2027 K325 syllabus has the same topics, learning outcomes, papers and weightings as O-Level Biology 6093 in 2026. The exam is now called the SEC, the code is K325, and the G3 grade is reported from A1 to 9. School and O-Level past papers remain useful practice.

How much does Secondary 4 Biology tuition cost?

Sec 4 Biology is in our Upper Secondary band: S$35 to S$45 an hour for an undergraduate tutor, S$45 to S$65 for a full-time tutor and S$65 to S$95 for an ex-MOE teacher. In the months before the exam, some families switch to two shorter lessons a week so free-response writing is practised more often.

How should my child prepare for the free-response questions?

Paper 2 has a compulsory free-response question at the end of Section A, and Section B asks students to choose one of two free-response questions for 10 marks. A tutor teaches a short plan before writing: list the points the question needs, order them, then write each as a full sentence with the key term. Choosing the right Section B question quickly is practised too.

What is in the Biology practical paper?

Paper 3 is 1 h 50 min, worth 40 marks and 20% of the grade, with two to three compulsory practical questions. One or more may assess planning. Students may need to carry out food tests or enzyme experiments, observe specimens with a hand lens, and make labelled line drawings. A tutor practises planning, results tables and drawings at home.
