Signs an IP Biology student needs support in Years 3 and 4
H2 Biology builds directly on secondary Biology, so gaps in Years 3 and 4 matter more than they seem.
Answers are fluent but vague, using everyday words instead of the biological terms markers look for.
Physiology topics such as transport, excretion or homeostasis were covered quickly and not revisited.
Genetics and DNA work feels confusing even before the H2 molecular detail starts.
Projects or research tasks go well, but timed written tests on core content do not.
1 more
Your child transferred into the IP at Sec 3 and some topics were taught before they arrived.
Fixing these before Year 5 matters, because H2 Biology does not plan to teach O-Level topics again.
The Biology base H2 builds on
IP schools set their own Biology course, order and assessments. The H2 syllabus treats O-Level Biology as the foundation and does not revisit it, so the tutor checks your child's learning against the G3 Biology syllabus, in the order the school teaches.
Cells and the chemistry of life
The starting point of H2's first core idea, the cell and biomolecules of life.
Topics covered
- Organelles and their functions
- Diffusion, osmosis and active transport
- Carbohydrates, fats and proteins
- Enzymes and the lock and key hypothesis
- Specialised cells and their adaptations
Human and plant physiology
How organisms stay alive, the level of biology secondary school focuses on.
Topics covered
- Nutrition, transport and respiration in humans
- Excretion and homeostasis
- Nerves, hormones and the eye
- Infectious diseases, vaccines and antibiotics
- Photosynthesis, transpiration and translocation
- Energy flow and the carbon cycle in ecosystems
Genetics and continuity of life
The base for H2's genetics and inheritance and its evolution core idea.
Topics covered
- DNA, genes, chromosomes and base pairing
- Mitosis and meiosis
- Sexual and asexual reproduction
- Monohybrid inheritance and codominance
- Mutation, variation and natural selection
IP Biology in Years 3 and 4: fixed and school-set
What MOE and SEAB fix, and what each IP school decides for itself. We do not describe any particular school's Biology course.
H2 Biology is organised into four core ideas: the cell and biomolecules of life, genetics and inheritance, energy and equilibrium, and biological evolution. Each starts from secondary Biology.
| Question | IP Years 3 and 4 | Sec 3 and 4 on the SEC track |
|---|---|---|
| Exam in Secondary 4 | None. IP students do not take the SEC in Secondary 4. | SEC G3 Biology, syllabus K325, in three papers. |
| Who designs the course | The IP school, building on its own strengths, as MOE describes. | SEAB, through one published K325 syllabus. |
| What follows | Years 5 and 6, ending in the A-Level, the IB Diploma or the NUS High School Diploma by school. | JC, polytechnic or other routes after results in January. |
| How H2 Biology treats this stage | As the foundation, not to be revisited at A-Level. | The same, with the SEC paper as the check. |

Before you book an IP Biology tutor
What IP families ask before Biology tuition in Years 3 and 4.
| Question | For IP Years 3 and 4 |
|---|---|
| Which tutor suits IP Biology? | Choose a tutor who is happy to teach from your school's materials and who knows where each topic goes in H2. Tutors who also teach JC Biology can point out what matters later. The profiles include each tutor's qualifications, teaching experience and levels. |
| What does it cost? | IP Years 3 and 4 follow the Upper Secondary band: S$35 to S$45 an hour with an undergraduate tutor, S$45 to S$65 with a full-time tutor and S$65 to S$95 with an ex-MOE teacher. Four 1.5-hour lessons with an ex-MOE teacher come to S$390 to S$570. |
| How does it start? | Tell us the IP school, the year, and what recent Biology tests or tasks showed. We send 2 to 4 tutor profiles within 16 hours. The first lesson is a paid trial at the tutor's hourly rate. |
| What are the terms? | No contract and no minimum, so lessons can fit around the school's project and test calendar. Cancel or move a lesson at least 24 hours ahead, or it is charged. If the fit is wrong, we re-match you free. |

IP Biology Tuition: a guide for parents
For IP Biology, one line in the H2 syllabus matters more than most. SEAB's H2 Biology document (9477) describes the subject as a seamless continuum from O-Level to A-Level, without the need for topics to be revisited at A-Level. It assumes candidates know O-Level Biology. IP students skip that exam, because MOE's IP is a six-year course with no SEC in Secondary 4. Each IP school designs its own Years 3 and 4 programme, so there is no national IP Biology syllabus to follow. The physiology, cells, genetics and ecology a student would meet in G3 Biology still need to be secure before Year 5.
Read the full guide
An IP Biology tutor keeps two goals in view. The first is your child's school course, which can be paced faster, organised around themes or projects, and assessed in the school's own way. The tutor works from the school's notes and returned work. The second goal is the ground H2 builds on, checked against the G3 Biology syllabus: cell structure, movement of substances, enzymes, human systems, plant transport, ecology, DNA and inheritance. H2 core ideas such as the cell and biomolecules of life and genetics and inheritance start from that base. Lessons are one-to-one, at home or online.
A DNA question shows how secondary Biology feeds H2: one strand of a DNA molecule has the base sequence ATGCCA. Give the sequence of the complementary strand and explain your answer. Using complementary base pairing, A pairs with T and C pairs with G, so the other strand reads TACGGT. A follow-up asks why the two strands must be complementary when DNA is copied, and the expected answer links base pairing to producing identical copies of the genetic information.
Students often swap C with T, or mix up DNA bases with amino acids. A tutor in Years 3 and 4 makes these rules automatic and connects them to genes and chromosomes, because the H2 core idea of genetics and inheritance takes them as known before adding its own molecular detail.

TSS stands out compared to other agencies I’ve tried. Everything was smooth from finding a tutor to starting lessons.
Tss is very outstanding compared to other tuition centre as they are very patient with the engagement i had with them.

I’ve tried other tuition agencies before, but TSS is definitely the one I’d recommend. The service is much better.

IP Biology Tuition: frequently asked questions
Why does Years 3 and 4 Biology matter so much for H2?
SEAB's H2 Biology syllabus describes a seamless continuum from O-Level to A-Level, without revisiting topics at A-Level, and assumes O-Level Biology knowledge. IP students do not sit that exam, so their school course carries the base instead. If a topic such as transport or inheritance was rushed, H2 will expect it anyway, and Year 5 has little time to go back.
How much does IP Biology tuition cost?
IP Years 3 and 4 are in our Upper Secondary rate band: S$35 to S$45 an hour for an undergraduate tutor, S$45 to S$65 for a full-time tutor and S$65 to S$95 for an ex-MOE teacher. Please name the IP school in your request so we can suggest tutors familiar with its style of course.
Does the tutor follow the school course or the SEC syllabus?
The school course comes first, because that is what your child is assessed on. The tutor works from the school's notes, worksheets and returned tests, since there is no national IP syllabus for Years 3 and 4. The G3 Biology syllabus sits in the background as a checklist, so nothing H2 assumes is left out.
Can tuition help with IP Biology projects?
A tutor can help your child understand the biology behind a project, plan an investigation sensibly, and present data clearly. The project itself must remain your child's own work, following the school's rules. Most of our IP Biology lessons focus on core understanding and written answers, which school tests and later H2 papers reward.
