The A-Math decision comes before Secondary 3, when upper secondary subjects start, and it is one of the few subject choices that opens or closes a door later. Here is what each subject covers under the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) and how to decide.
What is the difference between E-Math and A-Math?
E-Math is the subject SEAB calls Mathematics. MOE lists it as a compulsory subject at upper secondary, and it is offered at G1, G2 and G3. It covers three strands: number and algebra, geometry and measurement, and statistics and probability.
A-Math is Additional Mathematics. MOE lists it as an elective that students can take "at subject levels suited to their interests and strengths". SEAB says the G3 syllabus "assumes knowledge of G3 Mathematics" and aims to prepare students "for higher studies in mathematics", with an emphasis on the sciences. It covers algebra, geometry and trigonometry, and calculus.
| E-Math | A-Math | |
|---|---|---|
| G3 code from 2027 | K310 (was 4052) | K341 (was 4049) |
| Levels offered | G1, G2 and G3 | G2 and G3 |
| Compulsory? | Yes, at upper secondary | No, an elective |
| Main strands | Number and algebra, geometry and measurement, statistics and probability | Algebra, geometry and trigonometry, calculus |
| G3 exam | Two papers, each 2 h 15 min and 90 marks | Two papers, each 2 h 15 min and 90 marks |
| Leads to | Every post-secondary route | H2 Mathematics in JC assumes some A-Math content |
Both G3 papers allow an approved calculator, and both syllabuses state that "omission of essential working will result in loss of marks". Our SEC syllabus codes guide lists every G3 code.
Who should take A-Math?
A-Math suits a child who:
- is doing well in G3 Mathematics in Secondary 1 and 2, especially in algebra
- is willing to practise regularly, because A-Math topics build on each other quickly
- may want to take H2 Mathematics or the sciences in JC, or a maths-heavy course later
The school decides who can take A-Math. MOE says schools "will consider their students' learning progress and developmental needs" when guiding subject choices, so ask the form teacher what the school looks at and when the subject options form is due.
When is it better to skip A-Math?
Skipping A-Math can be the right call when E-Math is not yet secure. A-Math assumes G3 Mathematics, so gaps in algebra show up again, and faster.
It also helps to know how JC admission counts subjects from 2028. Under L1R4, R2 is the best G3 Mathematics or Science subject, and R3 and R4 are the best of the rest. A weak A-Math grade can therefore be left out of the aggregate if other subjects are stronger. The real cost is time. Hours spent on a subject that will not count can pull down the subjects that will. Our L1R4 guide and L1R5 and L1R4 calculator show how each grade moves the score.
Do you need A-Math for JC?
Not for admission itself. MOE's minimum for JC admission from 2028 is G3 Mathematics or Additional Mathematics at A1 to D7, along with the other entry grades.
For H2 Mathematics it is different. SEAB's H2 Mathematics syllabus (9758) assumes knowledge of O-Level Mathematics and lists topics from O-Level A-Math as assumed knowledge. Each JC also sets its own subject requirements. If your child may want H2 Mathematics or the H2 sciences, check the JC's subject combination rules before dropping A-Math.
Can my child take A-Math at G2?
Yes. SEAB lists G2 Additional Mathematics (K232) for 2027, with two papers of 1 hour 45 minutes and 70 marks each. Keep in mind that MOE counts only G3 subjects for JC and Millennia Institute admission, so a G2 A-Math grade will not count towards L1R4.
