The best primary English tuition centre for P1 to P4 depends on what your child needs. For the smallest group, Ancourage Academy teaches 3 to 6 children per class. For a P3 or P4 child who needs a lot of writing and oral practice, Thinking Factory caps classes at 8, plans about 36 composition themes a year and has the lowest published hourly fee, about S$38 at P3. For a quiet child who needs to speak every lesson, Lil' but Mighty caps every class at 6. For placement by ability rather than school level, My English School assesses each child first. For writing that builds towards situational writing from P2, The Write Connection runs a published P1 to P4 programme. For a branch near home, AGrader has 20 outlets and Aspire Hub 13 that offer primary English.
Best Primary English Tuition Centres in Singapore (2027): 10 for P1 to P4
Written and reviewed by Theon Teo, Founder · editorial policy
We compared 10 primary English tuition centres for P1 to P4 using only what each centre publishes, read on 8 November 2026. Fees per hour, class sizes, branches by region, trial terms, and what MOE's English syllabus and school assessments expect before the PSLE years.
We started from the centres that rank on Google Singapore for "primary English tuition centre", "P3 English tuition", "P4 English tuition Singapore" and "lower primary English class", and the centres named most often on the top comparison pages for those searches. From those we kept centres that met four tests.
- Teaches English at P1 to P4. Each centre runs a named lower or middle primary English class, not only phonics or a PSLE class.
- Publishes its programme. Levels, lesson content and branches are on its own site, so you can check them.
- Active for 2027. Each one lists current branches, a 2027 timetable or 2027 fees.
- A spread of needs. We wanted very small groups and large networks, writing-led and full-skill programmes, every region and a range of prices.
We kept the list different from our PSLE English tuition centres comparison, which covers P5 and P6, our creative writing classes comparison and our phonics classes comparison. A few centres appear in those lists too, because they run full classes at P1 to P4 as well.
Where a centre does not publish a fact, the table says "not published". We did not include Google ratings. We could not read a dated rating from a source we opened for every centre, and a partial set would not compare fairly. The order below is alphabetical, not a ranking.
The 10 centres compared
Our per-hour figure is an estimate. We divide the published fee by the published lesson length. Where a centre says GST is included, or does not say, we use the fee as published. Where the lesson length or the fee is not published, we do not estimate.

The 10 centres in detail
Academia
What is distinctive. An English-only centre from primary to JC General Paper with an in-house, scaffolded curriculum that it says is aligned to the Singapore English syllabus. It sorts primary children into levels: 0A and 0B for P1 and P2, and 1A and 1B for P3 and P4. Lower primary work covers grammar, foundational vocabulary, guided speaking and writing that grows from phrases to short narratives. Middle primary adds inference, situational writing, multimodal texts and more structured speaking. Progress is tracked through classwork, written feedback and a mid-year review session in the June holidays.
Suits: families who want an English specialist with a clear level structure and regular written feedback. Less suited to: parents who want the fee, class size and lesson length before they enquire, since none is published for these levels.
Fees as published: P1 to P4 fees are not shown on the fee page. New students pay a one-time S$115 registration fee. Fees are paid by the term, about every 12 weeks, with an 8% discount for paying the year up front by week 6 of Term 1.
Branches: Upper Thomson, Coronation, Whitley and Pasir Ris. The only address published is 6 Sin Ming Road #01-15. Nearest MRT stations are not published.
Website: academia.com.sg
Ask at the trial: What is the P3 fee per term, and how long is each lesson? How many children are in the class? Which level will my child start at, and how is that decided?
AGrader
What is distinctive. A multi-subject centre with 20 outlets that teaches each primary English topic 3 to 4 weeks before school reaches it, from its own worksheets, based on the latest MOE syllabus. Enrolment includes its EverLoop revision app with past-year paper packs, term revision packs and recorded lessons, and access to revision material from up to 3 earlier levels. Parents get a termly progress report through the app.
Suits: families who want a branch close to home and a child who benefits from seeing topics before school does. Less suited to: parents who want the standard monthly fee or class size on the website, since neither appears on its pages.
Fees as published: standard P1 to P4 fees are in per-branch fee and schedule downloads, which we could not open, so we have not quoted them. Its published trial is 4 lessons for S$129 before 9% GST, with no upfront deposit or registration fee.
Branches: 20, including Admiralty, Sembawang and Yishun in the north, Ang Mo Kio, Buangkok, Fernvale, Hougang, Kovan, Sengkang and Serangoon in the north-east, Bedok, Marine Parade, Pasir Ris and two in Tampines in the east, Boon Lay, Choa Chu Kang, Clementi and Jurong East in the west, and Tiong Bahru in the centre.
Website: agrader.sg
Ask at the trial: What is the monthly fee after the trial, and is there a deposit? How many children are in a P3 class? How is composition marked and returned?
Ancourage Academy
What is distinctive. The smallest published groups on this list, 3 to 6 children, in 1.5-hour primary lessons. Its English programme sets a clear focus for each year: reading fluency with phonics and sight words in P1, inferential reading and short compositions in P2, paragraph writing and oral storytelling in P3, and full-length compositions, direct and indirect speech and comprehension techniques in P4.
Suits: a child who needs close attention in a very small group, and families in Bishan or Woodlands. Less suited to: parents who want to compare a published fee before they enquire, since fees are quoted case by case.
Fees as published: not published. The pricing page says fees are customised and quoted on request. It states there are no registration, material or administrative fees. The usual trial price is S$18.
Branches: Blk 152 Bishan Street 11, and Vista Point, 548 Woodlands Drive 44, plus online classes. Nearest MRT stations are not published.
Website: ancourage.academy

Aspire Hub
What is distinctive. A multi-subject centre that publishes a full 2027 fee card and two class formats: Academic Coaching for 4 to 8 students in 2-hour lessons, and a Tutorial Series for up to 12 students in 1.5-hour lessons. Its P1 and P2 English covers phonics, oral language, guided reading, spelling and simple sentences and paragraphs. P3 and P4 move to literal and inferential reading, narrative and recount compositions using a story-arc framework, grammar in context and vocabulary such as word families and collocations.
Suits: parents who want a clear 2027 price and a choice of class size. Less suited to: families who want an English specialist, since it teaches several subjects.
Fees as published (2027, standard): S$1,104 per subject for 12 two-hour Academic Coaching lessons, or S$828 for 12 lessons of 1.5 hours in the Tutorial Series. Both work out to about S$46 an hour. P3 and P4 move to grammar application, comprehension, composition planning and question analysis, with vocabulary journals and step-by-step answering. Classes are capped at 9. A separate composition class runs from P2.
Suits: a child moving on from phonics who needs a gentle bridge into school English. Less suited to: parents who want fees and lesson length before they call, since neither is published.
Fees as published: not published. Lesson length and registration costs are not published either.
Branches: Bukit Timah Plaza, Greenwich V, iMall, Toa Payoh CC and The Woodleigh Mall (11 Bidadari Park Drive, nearest MRT Woodleigh). Other street addresses are not on the main page.

Lil' but Mighty
What is distinctive. An English-only centre that caps every class at 6. Each level has its own programme: P1 Wonder, P2 Ignite, P3 Unpack and P4 Build. Lessons run 2 hours. P1 and P2 are taught on site only, while P3 and P4 are available on site or online.
Suits: a quiet child who needs to speak and be checked every lesson. Less suited to: families looking for the lowest fee, since it has the highest published hourly fee here.

Website: lilbutmightyenglish.com
Ask at the trial: What will the 2027 P3 or P4 fee be? How much of each lesson is spent writing? How is oral practised before the end-of-year exam?
Lorna Whiston
What is distinctive. An English enrichment school that states it adheres closely to MOE's English Language learning outcomes, with each lesson built around a theme. Its Primary 1 to 3 band (ages 7 to 9) alternates between writing and comprehension, with oral and listening work each term, guided writing from pictures or a topic, and cloze and open-ended comprehension. P4 sits in its Primary 4 to 6 band (ages 10 to 12), which prepares for the PSLE with continuous and situational writing and stimulus-based conversation. Children are assessed once a term.
Suits: a P1 to P3 child who enjoys theme-based lessons, and a P4 child whose parents want PSLE formats introduced early. Less suited to: parents who want fees, class size or lesson length on the website, since none is published for enrichment classes.
Fees as published: not published. The fees page lists preschool fees only.
Branches: United Square #03-18, 101 Thomson Road (Novena, our reading), 101A Marine Parade Road #B1-20 (it notes exit 6) and Greenwich, 331 Yio Chu Kang Road, for weekend classes. The locations page also lists a second Marine Parade address marked coming soon, so confirm which one before visiting.

Ask at the trial: What is the termly fee and how long is each lesson? How many children are in a P3 class? Is my P4 child in the PSLE band, and what does that change?
My English School
What is distinctive. An English-only school from nursery to P6 with separate My Primary 1, 2, 3 and 4 classes. Children are placed by ability after an assessment rather than by school level. Lessons follow a spiral structure aligned to MOE's English Language Syllabus 2020, revisiting grammar, vocabulary, composition, comprehension and oral at rising difficulty. Its P4 class covers inference and visual text, synthesis and transformation, and planning a composition from a topic and one chosen picture out of three, the same set-up as the PSLE. Its curriculum team includes a former MOE Level Head for English.
Suits: a child who would be better placed by ability than by age, and families who want a centre in the heartlands. Less suited to: parents who need the lesson length or exact fee before visiting, since neither is fixed on the site.
Fees as published: from S$59 a lesson, billed by the term. The P4 page says fees vary by placement and class structure, and that any materials fee is stated up front. Lesson length is not published.
Branches: 17 listed (the site also says 15): Bukit Timah, Choa Chu Kang, Clementi, Downtown East, Jurong East, Jurong West, Khatib, Novena, Parkway Parade, Potong Pasir, Punggol, Simei, Tampines, Tengah, Tiong Bahru, Woodlands and Yishun.

Its P1 to P4 English tuition builds reading, writing, listening and speaking in P1, introduces functional writing in P2 as a lead-in to situational writing, teaches situational writing scenarios and exam skills in P3, and starts gearing up for the PSLE in P4. A separate Writing Enrichment class runs from P1 to P6.
Suits: a child whose writing needs steady work from early on, and families who want a published fee. Less suited to: parents who want a published class size, since it is not stated.

Classes are capped at 8 and run 2 hours a week. At P3 and P4 the programme plans weekly writing, about 36 composition themes from November to October, weekly Paper 2 work and monthly progress reports. Oral is practised weekly in April and May and for 6 weeks before the end-of-year oral, with about 9 group themes plus 2 individual tests at P3 and about 12 plus 2 at P4.
Suits: a P3 or P4 child who needs a lot of writing and oral practice in a small class. Less suited to: families with a P1 or P2 child, since classes start at P3.
Fees as published: P3: S$75 per 2-hour lesson. P4: S$80. No GST, billed monthly, materials included. Registration fees, deposits and trial terms are not published. New 2027 classes began in early November 2026.

Ask at the trial: Is a composition marked every week? How many oral themes will my P4 child cover? Is there a registration fee or deposit?
What P1 to P4 English covers
Every primary school teaches English from MOE's English Language Syllabus 2020, which started with the 2020 Primary 1 cohort. MOE groups the years into lower primary (P1 and P2), middle primary (P3 and P4) and upper primary (P5 and P6), the PSLE years.
| Area of language learning | What it means at P1 to P4 |
|---|---|
| Listening and viewing | Listening attentively for a sustained period, picking out key words and main ideas, and understanding texts that are seen as well as heard |
| Reading and viewing | Accurate, fluent reading in the early years, then close reading at literal and inferential levels and responding to implied meaning |
| Speaking and representing | Clear pronunciation, retelling and presenting ideas, and taking part in discussions |
| Writing and representing | From writing readiness and spelling to generating, organising and revising ideas, with growing attention to how different kinds of text are structured |
| Grammar | Taught explicitly and through texts, at word, phrase and sentence level first, with text-level grammar coming in gradually from upper primary |
| Vocabulary | Built at every level, through reading and through use in speech and writing |
The syllabus also asks for attention to phonemic awareness, phonics and early literacy at the start of P1, as the base for reading fluency. Our phonics classes comparison covers that stage.
How school assessment works at P3 and P4
- P1 and P2No weighted assessments or examsMOE removed them from 2019. Learning is reported with qualitative descriptors, not marks.
- P3Weighted assessments beginNo mid-year exam. At most one weighted assessment per subject per term, then an end-of-year exam.
- P4The year that sets P5 levelsThe same pattern, and the end-of-year results decide whether English is taken at standard or foundation level in P5.
- P5 and P6The PSLE yearsUpper primary work, ending in the PSLE at the end of P6.
MOE removed mid-year exams for P3 and P5 in stages from 2019 to 2021, and for all remaining levels by 2023. It says students get enough feedback through weighted assessments and classroom assignments. From P3 onwards a school may hold no more than one weighted assessment per subject each term. Each school sets its own weightings and formats and sends them home in its assessment letters, so read your school's letter for the exact split. Report books no longer show class or level position, and marks are rounded to whole numbers.
P4 matters more than it looks. At the end of P4 the school recommends a subject combination from the year-end results. A child who passes 3 or more subjects is offered all 4 at standard level. A child who passes 2 or fewer can choose combinations that include foundation subjects. Parents fill in an option form in P4, and the school can adjust levels at the end of P5.
Where P4 starts to feel like the PSLE
The PSLE English paper sets the target that P3 and P4 build towards. SEAB's format for PSLE English (0001) is out of 200 marks.
| PSLE section | What it asks | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Continuous writing | A composition of at least 150 words on a topic, based on at least one of three pictures | 36 |
| Situational writing | A short functional piece such as a letter, email or report | 14 |
| Open-ended comprehension | 10 written questions on a passage | 20 |
| Synthesis and transformation | 5 items joining or rewording sentences | 10 |
| Oral | Reading aloud 15 and a conversation on a photo 25 | 40 |
- words, the minimum PSLE composition length
- 150
- pictures offered, the composition must use at least one
- 3
- marks for open-ended comprehension
- 20
- marks for oral, 20% of the PSLE result
- 40
The syllabus moves middle primary children from accurate, fluent reading to close reading at the inferential level, and from short pieces towards planned, organised texts. The PSLE format shows where that leads: longer compositions planned from a topic and pictures, written answers to comprehension questions in a child's own words, and conversation on a photo in the oral. Several centres on this list mark that shift. My English School's P4 class already plans from one picture out of three, The Write Connection begins PSLE preparation in P4, and Lorna Whiston places P4 in its PSLE band. Our Primary 3 guide and Primary 4 guide cover both years across all subjects.
Centre, home tutor or online?
| Point | English centre class | One-to-one tutor, at home or online |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per hour | About S$38 to S$55 where fee and length are published, shared with the class | S$25 to S$70 at P1 to P4, from our rate card, by tutor type |
| Who sets the pace | The class programme and its timetable | The tutor, around your child's weakest skill |
| Writing feedback | Varies, so ask to see marked work | Each piece can be gone through in the lesson |
| Reading and oral | Shared practice time in a group | Your child reads and speaks for most of the hour |
| Best for | A child who is keeping up and enjoys working with peers | A reading gap, weak spelling or grammar, or a child who goes quiet in class |
At P1 to P4 a one-to-one hour can cost less than a centre hour at the lower end of our rate card, and the whole hour goes to one child. A centre class gives company and a set programme. Our pricing page has the full TSS rate card.

How to choose
- Find the real gapLook at recent school work. Slow reading, weak spelling and grammar, thin compositions and shy oral each need a different kind of class.
- Match the class to the yearP1 and P2 need reading, phonics and sentence work. P3 and P4 need paragraph and composition writing, inferential comprehension and oral practice.
- Check the real costAdd registration, deposit and materials to the lesson fee, and work out the cost per hour.
- Book a trial with real workBring a recent composition or worksheet so the teacher works on your child's actual errors.
- Ask for the year planA good centre can say how many compositions and oral sessions come before the end-of-year exam.
At the trial, check these five things:
| Check | A good answer looks like |
|---|---|
| Marked work | Comments that name a problem and show a fix, and a rewrite the next week |
| Reading | Your child reads aloud and answers questions in their own words, not only ticks options |
| Oral | Reading aloud with feedback, plus conversation on a picture, through the year |
| Who talks | Your child writes or speaks for most of the lesson |
| Progress record | A dated record shared with you each term |
One warning sign at P3 and P4 is a pile of model compositions to memorise. The PSLE essay must use one of three pictures, so it pays to learn planning early. A centre teaching 10 or more students at a time should appear in MOE's private schools search, though registration is not a mark of quality.
If one-to-one sounds right, our P3 English tuition page and P4 English tuition page explain what a tutor covers in each year, and the primary English tuition page covers every level.
Common questions
Which is the best primary English tuition centre for P1 to P4?
It depends on the need. From our comparison, Ancourage Academy has the smallest groups at 3 to 6, Lil' but Mighty caps classes at 6, Thinking Factory gives P3 and P4 the most planned writing and oral practice, and My English School places children by ability.
How much does P3 or P4 English tuition cost at a centre in 2027?
Where fee and lesson length are both published, P3 and P4 classes cost about S$38 to S$55 an hour, from fees we read on 8 November 2026. Per lesson, published fees run from S$75 at Thinking Factory (P3) to S$109 at Lil' but Mighty, and My English School starts from S$59 a lesson.
What class size is best for lower primary English?
Smaller groups give each child more reading and speaking time. Of the centres that publish a cap, Ancourage Academy is 3 to 6, Lil' but Mighty 6, Thinking Factory 8, Jan & Elly 9 and My English School 10.
Are there exams in P1 and P2?
No. MOE removed all weighted assessments and examinations for P1 and P2 from 2019, and learning is reported with qualitative descriptors rather than marks.
Are there mid-year exams in P3 and P4?
No. MOE removed mid-year exams for all levels by 2023. P3 and P4 have at most one weighted assessment per subject each term and an end-of-year exam, with weightings set by each school.
Why does P4 English matter?
At the end of P4 the school uses year-end results to recommend whether each subject, English included, is taken at standard or foundation level in P5. A child who passes 3 or more subjects is offered all 4 at standard level.
When does P4 English start to look like the PSLE?
The PSLE composition needs at least 150 words and must use at least one of three pictures, and open-ended comprehension is worth 20 marks. My English School already practises planning from one picture out of three at P4, and Lorna Whiston places P4 in its PSLE band.
Do these centres offer trial lessons?
My English School offers a placement assessment at no charge. Ancourage Academy's usual trial price is S$18, AGrader offers 4 trial lessons for S$129 before GST, Academia a three-lesson trial package and The Write Connection a paid trial lesson. Others take bookings but do not publish terms.
Is a centre or a home tutor better at P1 to P4?
Neither in general. A small class suits a child who is keeping up and enjoys peers, while one-to-one suits a specific gap such as reading fluency, spelling or a child who goes quiet in class.
How much is one-to-one P1 to P4 English tuition through TSS?
From our rate card, S$25 to S$70 an hour at P1 to P4, by tutor type. The same rates apply at home or online.
