From PSLE 2026 to Secondary 1 in 2027: What Parents Should Expect

A child sitting the PSLE in 2026 starts Secondary 1 in 2027 under Full Subject-Based Banding from day one, and will sit the Singapore-Cambridge SEC at the end of secondary school rather than the O-Level. Posting still runs on PSLE Achievement Levels exactly as before.

What posting looks like

Nothing about the PSLE or the posting exercise changes for this cohort. The Achievement Level bands your child is scored in, the school choice exercise and the posting results all work as they did last year. Our PSLE explained guide covers the scoring in full.

What changes is what happens after posting. Your child will not be placed into an Express, Normal (Academic) or Normal (Technical) stream, because those streams no longer exist. Instead the school uses the PSLE result to set a starting level for each subject.

How subject levels start

The practical consequence is that a child who is strong in Mathematics and weaker in a language is no longer forced to take both at the same standard. That is the point of the system, and it is generally good news for families whose child has an uneven profile.

What to do over the holidays

The end-of-year holiday between the PSLE and Secondary 1 is longer than most families expect, and the temptation is either to do nothing or to start Secondary 1 content early. Neither is ideal.

The two things that actually help are narrower. First, close any genuine gap the PSLE exposed, particularly in Mathematics, where Secondary 1 algebra assumes fluency with fractions, ratio and negative numbers. Second, let your child rest properly, because Secondary 1 is a significant step up in pace and a tired start is hard to recover from.

Starting Secondary 1 content in November rarely pays off. Schools teach it from the beginning regardless, and a child who has half-learned a topic often listens less carefully the second time.

The subjects that change most

Mathematics changes character at Secondary 1: the arithmetic-heavy PSLE style gives way to algebra, and students who relied on model drawing rather than understanding tend to stall in the first term. Science splits into distinct disciplines with their own vocabulary and command words. Looking further ahead

Because this cohort sits the SEC, the subject levels set in Secondary 1 and reviewed through Secondary 2 matter more than a stream placement used to, and the level chosen for each subject at the start of Secondary 3 shapes the post-secondary options. Common questions

Does the 2026 PSLE work differently because of the SEC?
No. The PSLE, its Achievement Level scoring and the posting exercise are unchanged for this cohort.

Will my child be in a stream?
No. Streams have been replaced by subject levels, so each subject is taken at G1, G2 or G3 rather than the whole timetable sitting at one standard.

Can subject levels change after Secondary 1?
Yes. Schools review levels at set points and can move a student where their results support it.

Should we start Secondary 1 tuition in the holidays?
Only if there is a real gap to close from the PSLE. Pre-teaching next year's syllabus is usually less valuable than a rested start and solid fundamentals.
