There is no official data on which subjects Singapore families take tuition in. MOE said in 2026 that it does not track tuition by subject. So the most useful guide is the exam itself: where do marks depend on skills that are hard to check one by one in a full class?
Which subjects benefit most from 1-to-1 tuition?
The pattern is the same at every level. One-to-one time pays off where a mark depends on how your child works through a problem or puts an answer into words, because a tutor can see each step and correct it on the spot.
| Subject | Where the marks depend on your child's own work | What 1-to-1 adds |
|---|---|---|
| Mathematics (PSLE, E-Math, A-Math, H2) | Working and method on multi-step questions | Finds the exact step that goes wrong |
| Science (PSLE and SEC) | Open-ended and structured answers | Fixes wording and keywords in your child's own answers |
| English | Composition, situational writing and oral | Marks drafts and practises speaking |
| Mother Tongue | Oral, writing and comprehension | Regular speaking practice and corrected writing |
| Chemistry and Physics | Linked concepts, such as the mole and forces | Rebuilds the chain from the first gap |
Why Mathematics benefits most often
Maths is cumulative. A gap in fractions shows up again in ratio, and weak algebra shows up again in A-Math and H2 Mathematics. In a full class there is little time to check every line of working. One-to-one, a tutor sees the line where it went wrong.
The exams reward working. PSLE Mathematics has two papers of 50 marks each, one without a calculator, and both the SEC Mathematics (K310) and Additional Mathematics (K341) syllabuses state that "omission of essential working will result in loss of marks". Our guide to E-Math vs A-Math under the SEC explains the two subjects, and math tuition in Singapore covers every level.
Why Science answers benefit
In PSLE Science, Booklet A is 30 multiple-choice questions for 60 marks and Booklet B is 10 to 11 structured questions for 40 marks, answered in your child's own words. Children often understand the idea but lose marks because the answer is vague or misses a key word. That is hard to fix from a model answer alone and quick to fix when a tutor marks your child's own answers each week.
At secondary level the jump to separate Chemistry and Physics adds linked concepts, such as the mole, that are hard to rebuild in a full class. See our guide to why students lose Science marks and primary science tuition.
Why English and Mother Tongue benefit
Writing and speaking improve with feedback on your child's own work, and class time for that is limited.
- PSLE English: Writing is 25% of the grade, Language Use and Comprehension 45%, Listening 10% and Oral 20%.
- PSLE Chinese: Writing is 20%, Language Use and Reading Comprehension 45%, and Oral 25%.
A tutor can mark a composition line by line, then run a short oral practice in the same lesson. For Mother Tongue, regular conversation matters most, especially in homes where the language is not spoken every day.
When is a group class or self-study enough?
One-to-one is not always needed.
- Content revision for a child who already understands the topic can work well in a class or with practice papers.
- Time and motivation problems are not fixed by more teaching. If homework is simply not being done, start with the routine.
- A child who is coping may not need tuition at all. Our guide to whether tuition is necessary sets out MOE's view.
