Primary 2 in 2027: Syllabus, Assessments and Gaps to Close Before P3

Written and reviewed by Theon Teo, Founder · editorial policy

What a Primary 2 child learns in 2027, topic by topic, from MOE's Maths and English syllabuses. Plus how P2 is assessed without marks or exams, the 2027 term dates, where children struggle, and the gaps to close before Science starts in P3.

The P2 Maths syllabus takes your child from numbers to 100 up to numbers to 1000, adds the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables, and brings in fractions, money in dollars and cents, and measuring in metres, kilograms and litres. In English, P2 is about reading fluency, spelling and short pieces of writing. There are no marked exams in P2, which makes it the calmest year to fix gaps before P3, when Science and weighted tests begin.

This guide is for parents of a child entering Primary 2 in 2027. It puts MOE's topic lists on the page, explains how P2 is assessed, sets out the 2027 term dates, and shows where children most often slip and what to do about it. Every syllabus fact comes from MOE's own documents, listed at the end.

Who is in Primary 2 in 2027?

Children born in 2019 who entered Primary 1 in January 2026. This is what applies to them.

The order schools usually teach P2 Maths, term by term

MOE lists the topics but not the order. Each school sets its own scheme of work. The term-labelled P2 checks that schools have set (Rosyth's 2021 Term 1 to Term 4 topical reviews, St Hilda's 2023 Term 2 and Term 4 checks, and the four-part review series from Henry Park in 2023, Tao Nan in 2022 and ACS (Junior) in 2021) follow a similar pattern.

Term in 2027Topics most schools coverWhat the school checks showed
Term 1 (4 Jan to 12 Mar)Numbers to 1000, addition and subtraction up to 3 digitsRosyth's Term 1 review, Henry Park's Quiz 1 and ACS (Junior)'s first check all test numbers to 1000 and adding and subtracting
Term 2 (22 Mar to 28 May)Multiplication and division with the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 tables, often with length or massSt Hilda's Term 2 check and Henry Park's Quiz 2 are all multiplication and division
Term 3 (28 Jun to 3 Sep)Length, mass, money and time, mixed with the earlier operationsRosyth's Term 3 review covers length and money, ACS (Junior)'s third check covers length, mass and money
Term 4 (13 Sep to 19 Nov)Fractions, volume in litres, picture graphs, 2D and 3D shapes, then revision of the yearSt Hilda's Term 4 check and Henry Park's Quiz 4 cover fractions and volume. Rosyth's Term 4 review mixes the whole year

Your school's own plan may move a topic by a term, so check the scheme of work or assessment plan sent home on Parents Gateway.

Picture graphs and 3D shapes, shown

A picture graph with a scale is the new statistics idea. Here one symbol stands for 2 books.

ChildBooks read in March (● = 2 books)Books
Aisha● ● ● ●8
Ben● ●4
Wei Ling● ● ● ● ● ●12

Worked example. How many more books did Wei Ling read than Ben? Wei Ling has 6 symbols and Ben has 2, so the difference is 4 symbols. Each symbol is 2 books, so 4 × 2 = 8 books more. The usual mistake is to answer 4, counting symbols instead of books.

The five 3D shapes in the P2 syllabus, with the features children use to describe and sort them:

3D shapeFlat facesCurved surfaceEveryday example
Cube6, all squaresNoA dice
Cuboid6, rectangles (some may be squares)NoA tissue box
Cylinder2, circlesYesA can of drink
Cone1, a circleYesAn ice cream cone
SphereNoneYesA ball

A quick test at home: ask which shapes can roll (the ones with a curved surface) and which can stack flat (the ones with flat faces top and bottom).

The jump is mainly in size and speed. Numbers grow tenfold, the times tables have to become quick recall rather than counting on fingers, and fractions and decimal money notation appear for the first time.

What comes next, in P3

MOE's P3 Maths list moves to numbers up to 10 000, the 6, 7, 8 and 9 times tables, multiplying and dividing up to 3 digits by 1 digit, equivalent fractions, kilometres and millilitres, the 24-hour clock, area and perimeter, angles, and bar graphs. Each one builds directly on a P2 topic, which is why the gaps section below matters.

P2 English syllabus: what your child learns

P2 English follows MOE's 2020 English Language syllabus. MOE groups P1 and P2 together as lower primary and sets these aims for them.

Area of language learningFocus in P1 and P2
Listening and ViewingListening attentively for longer, recognising sounds and key words, and responding to stories and texts for enjoyment and understanding.
Reading and ViewingReading readiness, word recognition, accuracy and fluency, building on the phonemic awareness and phonics taught at the start of P1. Understanding the literal meaning of age-appropriate texts.
Speaking and RepresentingFluency and accuracy in pronunciation, taking part respectfully in discussion, and speaking with confidence. Producing spoken texts that recount, entertain, instruct and respond.
Writing and RepresentingWriting readiness and writing in print script. Spelling age-appropriate words accurately. Learning to generate, organise and revise ideas, with some attention to how different types of text are structured.
GrammarExplicit grammar teaching at word, phrase and sentence level. Text-level grammar comes later, from upper primary.
VocabularyBuilding vocabulary at every level.

Schools deliver this through STELLAR, a reading-based programme. Government schools describe lessons built around a Big Book that the class reads together (the Shared Book Approach), followed by explicit teaching of phonics, grammar and concepts of print. Activities inspired by the books follow, such as a P2 class watching a butterfly's life cycle and then writing about it. So the stories your child brings home are the core of the English lesson, not extras.

What is new in P2 English compared with P1

MOE sets one set of aims for P1 and P2 together, so the change is one of degree rather than new topics. The syllabus puts phonemic awareness and phonics at the start of P1. In P2 the same goals stretch further: longer books read with more accuracy and fluency, more words spelt independently, and short written texts that recount, describe or respond, with more attention to how each type of text is organised. Grammar stays at word, phrase and sentence level throughout lower primary.

Mother Tongue in P2, in brief

  • Chinese. The 2024 Chinese Language syllabus applies to this cohort from P1, since it started with the 2024 Primary 1 class.
  • Malay and Tamil. MOE lists 2024 primary syllabuses for both. The Malay syllabus sets the standard expected at the end of P2, P4 and P6, so the end of P2 is its first checkpoint.
  • Extra help. MOE says P2 students may be identified for the Mother Tongue Support Programme, which runs in P3 and P4.

How is P2 assessed in 2027?

P2 has no exams and no weighted assessments. MOE announced in September 2018 that from 2019 all weighted assessments and examinations for P1 and P2 would be removed, including the old P2 year-end exam. MOE said assessments that are still done "will not be counted to form any overall mark or grade".

Here is what that means in practice:

  • Short checks continue. MOE said teachers will keep using assessments to check understanding and give timely feedback. Schools run these as short, non-weighted tasks, often called bite-sized assessments or mini tests. Lianhua Primary, for example, says its P1 and P2 students have mini tests each term that are non-weighted.
  • Progress is reported in words. MOE guides schools to use qualitative descriptors for P1 and P2, so the Holistic Development Profile (the report book) describes how your child is doing rather than giving a mark.
  • No class or level positions. Since 2019, report books at every level no longer show class and level positions.
  • Edusave awards still apply. For P1 and P2, the Edusave Merit Bursary goes to the top 25% of the level who show positive learning dispositions and good conduct, within an income limit (gross household income up to $9,000 or per capita income up to $2,250). The Edusave Good Progress Award for P2 and P3 goes to the top 10% who do not qualify for the bursary and show the greatest improvement in learning disposition. The amounts are $200 and $100.

Your school's own plan, usually shared on Parents Gateway early in the year, sets out when the checks happen and when you will receive the report. Read it so you know what each check covers.

What changes in P3

From P3, schools run weighted assessments during the year and an end-of-year exam. Lianhua Primary's plan, for example, weights P3 to P5 work at 10%, 15% and 15% in Terms 1 to 3, with the end-of-year exam at 60%. Each school sets its own weighting. Our guide to WA1, WA2 and SA2 explains how these work.

Where P2 children commonly struggle

Place value to 1000

Children who counted comfortably to 100 can lose their footing when hundreds arrive. The usual slips:

  • Writing "four hundred and five" as 4005 or 45, because they write each part they hear.
  • Thinking 450 and 405 are close, without seeing that the 5 sits in a different place.
  • Losing track when counting on in tens across a hundred, such as 380, 390, then 310.

Worked example. Write 607 in a place value chart: 6 hundreds, 0 tens, 7 ones. Then ask: what is 607 + 10? The tens digit changes from 0 to 1, giving 617. What is 607 + 100? The hundreds digit changes, giving 707. If your child can do these without writing a sum, place value is secure.

Multiplication tables of 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10

The syllabus expects quick recall and mental calculation within these tables, plus division as the reverse. Children who still count up in 3s on their fingers take too long and make more mistakes, and in P3 they have to add the 6, 7, 8 and 9 tables on top.

Worked example. 4 × 5 = 20, so 20 ÷ 5 = 4 and 20 ÷ 4 = 5. Practise each table as a family of four facts like this, not only as a chant.

Money

Decimal notation is the new idea. The common errors are reading $3.05 as "three dollars and five" without knowing it is 5 cents, and writing 385 cents as $38.5.

Worked example. $3.85 = 3 dollars and 85 cents = 300 cents + 85 cents = 385 cents. Going back, 240 cents = $2.40, not $2.4 or $24.

Time

Reading a clock to the exact minute and converting units both trip children up.

Worked example. 2 h 15 min in minutes: 2 h = 120 min, and 120 + 15 = 135 min. Going back, 75 min = 60 min + 15 min = 1 h 15 min.

Word problems

P2 word problems mix the new topics: money, length, mass and the times tables. Children often grab the numbers and add them, without reading what is asked.

Worked example. "There are 5 boxes. Each box has 4 cupcakes. Mum gives away 6 cupcakes. How many are left?" Step 1: 5 × 4 = 20 cupcakes. Step 2: 20 − 6 = 14 cupcakes. Ask your child to draw the 5 boxes before calculating, and to say what each number means.

Fractions

The new idea is that a fraction is part of a whole split into equal parts. Many children believe 1/5 is bigger than 1/3 because 5 is bigger than 3.

Worked example. Cut one paper strip into 3 equal parts and another the same size into 5. One part of the first strip is clearly bigger, so 1/3 is greater than 1/5. With like fractions, 2/7 + 3/7 = 5/7, because only the number of parts changes.

Reading fluency

The English syllabus names accuracy and fluency as lower primary goals. Signs of a fluency gap in P2: reading word by word with no expression, guessing words from the first letter, losing the meaning by the end of a sentence, or avoiding reading altogether. Fluency matters beyond English, because from P3 your child has to read Maths word problems and Science questions independently.

Gaps to close before P3

P3 adds Science, the 6 to 9 times tables, numbers to 10 000 and the first weighted assessments, all in the same year. Science in P3 starts with diversity of living and non-living things, diversity of materials, life cycles of plants and animals, and magnets, from MOE's 2023 Primary Science syllabus. Science questions are mostly written in sentences, so reading carries straight across.

Use this checklist in Term 4 of P2:

SkillReady for P3 when your child can
Place valueRead, write and compare any number to 1000, and add or take away 10 or 100 mentally
Times tablesAnswer any fact in the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 tables, and the matching division, within a few seconds
Adding and subtractingUse the written method for 3-digit numbers with regrouping, and check the answer
MoneyConvert between dollars and cents both ways, and add simple amounts
MeasurementChoose the right unit (m, kg, g or ℓ) and read a scale
TimeTell the time to the minute and convert hours to minutes
Word problemsRead a two-step problem, explain what it asks and show the steps
ReadingRead a short book aloud with expression and retell it in their own words
WritingWrite five or six connected sentences with full stops, capital letters and the past tense

If two or more rows are a struggle in October, the year-end holidays from 20 November are a good window to work on them before P3 begins.

How parents can help at home

  1. Practise tables little and oftenFive minutes a day on one table, mixing multiplication and division, beats one long weekend session.
  2. Let your child handle moneyAsk them to pay at the canteen or a shop, count the change, and say the amount in cents.
  3. Use real unitsWeigh fruit in kilograms, measure a room in metres, and read the litres on a drink carton.
  4. Read aloud every dayTen to fifteen minutes, with your child reading to you and then talking about the story.
  5. Talk through word problemsAsk what the question wants and what each number means before any calculating.
  6. Check the returned workLook at the bite-sized checks each term and ask the teacher about any pattern of errors.

Keep the home routine light. P2 is about steady habits and confidence, not long practice papers.

When does tuition help in P2?

Most P2 children do not need tuition. It can help when there is a specific gap that school and home practice have not closed:

  • Your child is still counting on fingers for the 2, 5 and 10 tables by Term 3.
  • Teacher feedback mentions the same Maths topic, such as place value or money, more than once.
  • Your child reads word by word, avoids books, or cannot retell a simple story.
  • Your child was identified for learning support at school and you want extra practice at home as well.

Before arranging tuition, ask the school about support it already gives. MOE's Learning Support for Mathematics runs in P1 and P2 in groups of up to 8 students, for 4 to 8 periods a week, and can continue up to P4 if required. The Learning Support Programme for English runs half an hour a day in groups of 8 to 10.

If you decide to get help, the tutor should target the gap, not add more worksheets. See P2 Maths tuition, P2 English tuition or Primary 2 tuition. Our guide on when to start tuition covers the timing question in more depth. If your child is younger and you are checking P1 readiness instead, see Is my child ready for P1 Maths.

Common questions

What topics are in the P2 Maths syllabus?

Numbers to 1000, adding and subtracting up to 3 digits, the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables, fractions of a whole, money in dollars and cents, length, mass and volume, time to the minute, 2D patterns, 3D shapes and picture graphs with scales. This is MOE's 2021 syllabus, which every P2 child follows.

Which syllabus does my P2 child follow in 2027?

The 2021 Maths syllabus, the 2020 English syllabus taught through STELLAR, and the 2024 Mother Tongue syllabuses. The 2024 Chinese syllabus started with the 2024 P1 class, so this cohort has used it from P1.

Are there exams in P2?

No. MOE removed all exams and weighted assessments for P1 and P2 from 2019, including the P2 year-end exam.

Do P2 children get marks or class positions?

No. Schools report P1 and P2 learning with qualitative descriptors, and report books at every level no longer show class or level positions.

What are bite-sized assessments in P2?

Short, non-weighted checks that teachers run during the year to see what your child understands and give feedback. They do not add up to a mark or grade.

Which times tables does P2 cover?

The 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 tables, with the matching division facts. The 6, 7, 8 and 9 tables come in P3.

Is P2 Maths harder than P1?

Yes. Numbers go from 100 to 1000, the times tables need quick recall, and fractions, decimal money notation, metres, kilograms and litres are all new.

When does Science start?

In P3. In 2028 this cohort starts with living and non-living things, materials, life cycles and magnets.

Can a P2 child get an Edusave award without marks?

Yes. The Edusave Merit Bursary for P1 and P2 and the Good Progress Award for P2 and P3 are based on learning dispositions, such as diligence and enthusiasm, and conduct, not test scores.

When does P2 start and end in 2027?

P2 starts on Tuesday 5 January 2027, and the school year ends on Friday 19 November 2027.

Where can I get free P2 Maths practice papers?

Our school test papers library has free P2 Maths checks and revision sets from Singapore primary schools, each with an answer key, sorted by topic in the practice papers table above.

Does my P2 child need tuition?

Usually not. It helps when a clear gap, such as slow times tables or weak reading, has not closed with school support and practice at home.
