Choosing tuition

When should my child start PSLE tuition?

Reviewed by Theon Teo, Founder · Last checked · How we check facts

Short answer

For most children, the start of P5 is a good time to begin PSLE tuition if school marks are slipping, and January of P6 is the latest start that still allows a full run-up. In 2026 the PSLE written papers were in late September, so a P6 start in January gives about eight months of weekly lessons before them.

What the PSLE calendar looks like

SEAB has not yet published the 2027 PSLE timetable. In 2026, the oral exams were on 12 and 13 August, listening comprehension on 15 September and the written papers from 24 to 30 September. Results for the 2026 PSLE are due on 24 or 25 November 2026 (tentative).

The 2027 school year starts on 4 January. A P6 child in 2027 therefore has about eight months of term time before the written papers, with prelims at school usually in the months before.

Why P5 matters

Many PSLE questions draw on P5 topics as well as P6 ones. A child who struggled through P5 Maths often meets the same ideas again in harder P6 questions. Fixing P5 gaps during P5 is easier than doing it alongside the P6 workload.

Is it too late after June of P6?

Not too late, but the goal changes. With a few months left, lessons should target the two or three topics losing the most marks and timed paper practice, not reteaching the whole syllabus. Send the tutor the latest school paper before the first lesson so no time is lost.

How many hours, and what it costs

Families at P5 and P6 typically book 1.5 to 2 hours a week per subject. In 2027 that costs about S$30 to S$40 an hour with a part-time tutor, S$40 to S$55 with a full-time tutor and S$60 to S$80 with an ex-MOE teacher.

Common questions

Should we start all four PSLE subjects at once?

Rarely. Start with the subject losing the most marks, usually Maths or Science, and add another only if results show a clear gap.

Is the PSLE still on in 2027?

Yes. Nothing MOE or SEAB has published removes the PSLE or makes it optional in 2027. SEAB has not yet published the 2027 dates.

How does the PSLE Score work?

Each of the four subjects gets an Achievement Level from AL1 to AL8, and the PSLE Score is their sum, from 4, the best, to 32. Our PSLE Score calculator works it out from raw marks.
