Ten centres that teach JC Chinese in Singapore, compared on published fees, our cost per hour, group size, branches and trials, with the 2027 H1 Chinese (8655) and H2 Chinese Language and Literature (9575) papers and the Higher Chinese exemption rule from MOE school pages.
The right JC Chinese class depends on which paper is costing marks and where your teenager can get to after school.

How we worked out the estimates: EduZ's S$320 buys 4 lessons of 2 hours, so 8 hours at S$40.
Ruixing's S$468 buys 4 lessons of 2 hours, so S$58.50.
Jocelyn charges by the month for one 2-hour lesson a week, so we assumed 4 lessons, which gives S$39.75, or S$35.78 on its yearly rate.
Stalford does not state the lesson length, so its S$460 cannot be turned into an hourly figure.

May not suit: a family that wants a monthly price up front, or an H2 CLL student, since no separate H2 course is shown.
Groups are capped at 6 and run 2 hours, with all materials included. A JC2 Chinese course is listed alongside. The only educator named on the JC page is the founder and academic director, Min Hui.
Fees as published: Given on request by level and class type. The pricing page states there are no registration, material or administrative charges and sells packs of 4, 12 or 24 lessons. A standard trial costs S$18.

Suits: a JC student taking H2 CLL, or an H1 student who wants a holiday crash course before the June or October paper.
May not suit: a family that wants a fee, class size or teacher name before calling, since none is on the JC page.
The page quotes the right weights (comprehension 32.5%, essay 17.5%, literary analysis 50%) and lists classical texts, poetry, modern fiction, drama and unseen prose and poetry. It also runs H1 Chinese and General Studies in Chinese at 2 hours a week, and an H1 crash course only in the March, June, September and December holidays. Its footer names it an affiliate of the Stalford Education Group, and its outlet addresses match Stalford's.

Marsiling
Suits: a JC1 student in the north or north-west who wants a printed price and help timing the June re-sit.
May not suit: a JC2 student, since the Chinese page names JC1 only, or a student who needs English explanations.
Its Chinese page is unusually specific about the JC timing problem: JC1 lessons focus on the format of the mid-year A-Level paper, and extra lessons can be arranged for students re-sitting Chinese at year end. Lessons are taught wholly in Mandarin, and two of its Chinese tutors have taught for over 20 years.
Fees as published: Junior College S$320 per 4 lessons of 2 hours. No registration or material fee. S$20 off for two subjects and S$60 off for three or more. A trial lesson at no charge. GST is not mentioned.

Suits: a JC1 or JC2 student, or a private candidate, who wants a fixed Friday slot and the lowest monthly price among those published.
May not suit: a student who cannot make Friday evenings, or an H2 CLL student, since no H2 class is listed.
The 2027 timetable shows one H1 class, Fridays 7.45pm to 9.45pm at Coronation Plaza, taught by co-founder Mr Jareth Liew, who holds an NTU honours degree in Chinese with a minor in translation and has marked O-Level Chinese papers. The founder, Ms Jocelyn Tan, is a former MOE teacher with an MOE Teaching Award. Lessons are recorded, can be joined on Zoom, and private candidates sitting the June paper may join.

Suits: a student who wants a class near home or school and already attends Stalford for another subject, since multi-subject fees drop.
May not suit: a parent who wants the lesson length, group size or the branches that run JC Chinese, none of which is published.
The JC Chinese Language page covers essay writing, comprehension, oral presentation and appreciation of texts. Three teachers are named: Ms Kao (National Taipei University of Education), Ms Lu (Wuhan University and an NUS master's, writing specialist) and Ms Liu (Nankai University and an NUS master's in Chinese culture and language).
Fees as published: One JC subject costs S$460 for a block of 4 lessons. Taking more subjects lowers each one: S$440 with two, S$420 with three, S$400 with four. GST is added, and Stalford holds a deposit equal to one 4-lesson block per subject. The Chinese pages say nothing about a trial.

Classes are capped at 6 and last at most 1.5 hours. Fees are billed monthly in advance but only for lessons attended, so a lesson missed for illness is refunded or carried forward. The curriculum is written by an author of Chinese assessment books.

What the exam actually tests
Most JC students take H1 Chinese. A smaller group takes H2 Chinese Language and Literature instead. The two are very different exams, so check which one your child sits before choosing a class.
Who must take H1 Chinese, and the Higher Chinese exemption
MOE school pages set out the rule for students entering JC from O-Levels:
Every JC student must take H1 Mother Tongue, according to National JC. For Chinese, that is SEAB's H1 Chinese Language, syllabus 8655.
A student with a D7 or better in O-Level Higher Chinese is exempt from H1 Chinese, according to National JC and Catholic JC. Catholic JC adds that an exempt student is treated as having met the Mother Tongue requirement for local university admission.
A student with D7 or better in O-Level Chinese, or E8 or below in Higher Chinese, must take H1 Chinese and sit the paper in JC1, according to Catholic JC.
A student may take H2 Chinese Language and Literature in place of H1 Chinese, according to National JC.
Chinese B is for students who took Chinese B at O-Level or scored D7 to F9 in O-Level Chinese, and needs at least a Pass for local university admission, according to Catholic JC.
For the first SEC cohort, who enter JC in 2028, MOE says students will offer either H1 Mother Tongue or Mother Tongue B depending on the subjects taken at the SEC. MOE has not yet said what SEC Higher Chinese grade gives the exemption, so treat the D7 rule as an O-Level rule until it does. Our guides to Higher Mother Tongue and Mother Tongue under the SEC cover the choice at secondary level.

The oral topic comes from the H1 course's three themes: culture, relationships and change. The discussion is worth more than the presentation, which is why a class that only rehearses 2-minute talks leaves marks on the table. SEAB's 2026 calendar ran both written sittings as one 3-hour paper with a 15-minute break, and listening and orals once, in July.

H1 subjects are graded A to E as passes, then S (sub-pass) and U.
For local universities, an S grade or better in H1 Chinese, or a D7 in O-Level Higher Chinese, meets the Mother Tongue requirement, according to Catholic JC and NTU.
In the university admission score out of 70, H1 Mother Tongue is counted only if it raises the score.
When H1 Chinese is sat, with 2026 dates and 2027 windows
A JC1 student sits the paper at the end of JC1. A JC2 student may sit it in the middle or at the end of JC2, according to the SEAB syllabus. SEAB's rules let a candidate who sat in June sit again at year end, with the better grade counted. The 2027 timetable is not yet out, so the 2027 dates below are expected windows based on 2026.

If the June result is weak, the year-end paper is a second chance, and a class that works on the summary and the essay between August and October matters most then. Our guide to retaking A-Levels as a private candidate covers the route after JC.

Selection for a JC's Chinese Language Elective Programme earns 2 bonus points for JC admission, and MOE says those points need the student to offer the subject and sit its A-Level paper. How to choose a JC Chinese class
1Confirm the subjectH1 Chinese, H2 CLL or an exemption through O-Level Higher Chinese. Many centres teach H1 only.

Which JC Chinese tuition centres teach H2 Chinese Language and Literature?
Confucius Mandarin has a dedicated H2 CLL course of 2 hours a week, and Stalford lists a JC Chinese Literature course without details. The other eight centres here name H1 Chinese or a general A-Level Chinese class only.
How much does JC Chinese tuition cost in Singapore?
Among centres that publish, EduZ and Jocelyn work out to about S$40 an hour and Ruixing to S$58.50, while Stalford charges S$460 per 4 lessons plus GST. A private JC Chinese tutor on our rate card costs S$45 to S$130 an hour, depending on the tutor's background.
Is H1 Chinese compulsory in JC?
Yes, unless the student has a D7 or better in O-Level Higher Chinese or takes H2 Chinese Language and Literature instead, according to National JC. Students with E8 or below in Higher Chinese must take H1 Chinese.
Does a pass in Higher Chinese exempt my child from H1 Chinese?
Under the O-Level rule set out by National JC and Catholic JC, a D7 or better in Higher Chinese gives the exemption and also meets the university Mother Tongue requirement. MOE has not yet published the equivalent SEC grade for students entering JC in 2028.
When do JC students sit the H1 Chinese paper?
JC1 students sit the written paper at the end of JC1, which was 26 October in 2026. JC2 students may sit again in June or at year end, and the oral and listening ran once, from 7 to 15 July, in SEAB's 2026 calendar.
What happens in the H1 Chinese oral?
The candidate has 10 minutes to watch a 55 to 60 second video clip and plan, then gives a talk of up to 2 minutes (20 marks) and discusses it with the examiner (30 marks). Topics come from the themes of culture, relationships and change.
What is the summary in H1 Chinese comprehension?
In comprehension 2, the student condenses set paragraphs of the passage into no more than 70 characters. It sits inside a 9-question, 40-mark section, the biggest single block in the written paper.
Does H1 Chinese count for university admission?
An S grade or better meets the local university Mother Tongue requirement. In the admission score out of 70, H1 Mother Tongue is counted only if it raises the score, so a strong grade can help and a weak one is left out.
Can a private candidate join a JC Chinese class?
Jocelyn Chinese Tuition says private candidates sitting the June paper can join its H1 class and should tell the tutor. EduZ offers extra lessons for students re-sitting at year end.
