Higher Chinese at O-Level is now Higher Chinese at G3 in the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC). The papers and standard stay the same, under syllabus code K355 instead of 1116. What changes in 2027 is the timing. Every Mother Tongue written paper, at every level, is sat once, in September of Sec 4, with the orals and listening before it. Below are the papers and marks for each level, SEAB's marking guide, model answers, where to find practice papers, how the computer-based oral works, who can be exempted, the grades JC and MI need, the bonus points, and a month-by-month plan for a student moving from Sec 3 into Sec 4. Each fact is checked against SEAB and MOE.
Higher Chinese O-Level and SEC Mother Tongue 2027: Papers, Oral, JC Rules
Written and reviewed by Theon Teo, Founder · editorial policy
The O-Level gave Mother Tongue two sittings. The 2027 SEC gives one, in September. Here are the Higher Chinese, Chinese, Malay and Tamil papers and marks at G1, G2 and G3, how the e-Oral works, exemption, the JC and MI minimum grades, the 2 bonus points and a Sec 3 into Sec 4 plan.
Under the O-Level, Sec 4 students sat the Mother Tongue written papers in the June holidays and got the results in August. Anyone who wanted a better grade could sit again at year end, and the better grade counted. The SEC removes that second chance.
| Point | O-Level (up to 2026) | SEC (from 2027) |
|---|---|---|
| Written sittings a year | Two: mid-year (June) and year-end | One, in September |
| Who sits MTL in September | N(A) and N(T) candidates only | Every MTL level: G1, G2, G3 and Higher MTL |
| Orals and listening | Before each written sitting (July for mid-year) | Before the September written papers |
| Results | Mid-year MTL results in August (20 August 2026), year-end in January | All subjects together, in January of the next year |
| Levels | O-Level, N(A)-Level, N(T)-Level | G3, G2, G1, and Higher MTL at G3 |
| Higher Chinese code | 1116 | K355 |
| Chinese code | 1160 (O-Level), 1196 (N(A)), 1202 (N(T)) | K320 (G3), K220 (G2), K120 (G1) |
MOE explained the change in a parliamentary reply. Over the past five years more than 95% of students met the minimum Mother Tongue grade for JC (D7 at O-Level) at the mid-year sitting, and the second sitting changed post-secondary posting for fewer than 2% of the cohort. Schools also said students would gain more lesson time for the language. Students who still miss the grade can be admitted to JC or MI conditionally, as set out further down.
Our SEC from 2027 guide covers the whole exam change. This page covers only Mother Tongue.
Higher Chinese papers and marks (K355)
Higher Chinese has three papers and no listening paper. The format matches the 2026 O-Level syllabus 1116.
| Paper | Time | Marks | Weight | What it tests |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 Writing | 2 hours | 80 | 40% | Email or online forum post, 20 marks, at least 220 characters. Composition, 60 marks, at least 500 characters (narrative, expository or argumentative, speeches included) |
| Paper 2 Language use and reading | 1 hour 45 min | 80 | 40% | Fill in the blanks 10, sentence correction 10, comprehension one 10, comprehension two 38, summary of about 80 characters 12 |
| Paper 3 Oral | About 20 min | 40 | 20% | 10 minutes to watch a video clip and make notes, then a talk of up to 2 minutes (20) and a discussion with the examiner (20) |
- marks for one composition, 30% of the grade
- 60
- marks for comprehension two, the biggest reading block
- 38
- longest talk allowed in the oral
- 2 min
Where the marks sit tells you where the time should go. The composition alone is worth 30% of the subject, more than the whole oral. A student who writes well but reads slowly still has 40% riding on Paper 2, and the summary task rewards students who practise cutting a paragraph to about 80 characters until it feels routine. A dictionary approved by SEAB may be used in Paper 1.
How Higher Chinese is marked
SEAB publishes the marking guide in the appendices of the K355 syllabus. Examiners place each answer in a band, then pick a mark inside it. Here is what each band asks for, translated from the syllabus, with the key Chinese wording.
Composition (60 marks): content 30 and language and structure 30, each placed in one of five bands.
| Band | Marks per half | Content (内容) | Language and structure (语文与结构) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 25 to 30 | Full and on task (内容充实,切合题意), layered, detailed and orderly | Fluent, almost no errors, rich and apt vocabulary, varied sentences (用词丰富适当,句式正确且多样化), tightly linked paragraphs |
| 2 | 19 to 24 | Fairly full and fairly on task, fairly detailed | Fairly fluent, some small errors, apt words, some variety |
| 3 | 13 to 18 | Reasonably full, reasonably on task | Some errors, simple sentences with little variety |
| 4 | 7 to 12 | Thin and only partly on task, not clearly ordered | Many errors, limited vocabulary, no variety |
| 5 | 1 to 6 | Too little, off task, repetitive or muddled | Very many errors, poor vocabulary, disorganised |
Email or forum post (20 marks): content 10 and language and structure 10, in four bands (9 to 10, 6 to 8, 3 to 5, 1 to 2) with the same descriptions.
Oral (40 marks). The talk and the discussion are each marked out of 20.
| Part | What is marked | Marks | Top band asks for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Talk (口头报告) | Relevance, organisation and developed views | 14 (bands 11 to 14, 7 to 10, 4 to 6, 1 to 3) | A specific personal view on the clip's main message, explained in detail, in order, with relevant examples from the clip |
| Talk | Fluency and clarity | 6 (bands 6, 4 to 5, 2 to 3, 1) | Very clear and fluent, accurate sounds and tones, rich vocabulary, varied sentences |
| Discussion (讨论) | Taking part | 14 (same bands) | Joins in keenly, explains views clearly and in detail, gives full reasons |
| Discussion | Fluency and clarity | 6 | As for the talk |
The syllabus adds that for a persuasive clip the talk should aim to change what listeners think or do, and for a descriptive clip it should help them understand the speaker's view. Content and language carry equal weight in the writing, so a beautifully written essay that drifts off the question cannot reach Band 1.
How to prepare for each Higher Chinese paper
| Part | Marks | What to practise | A weekly habit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Email or forum post | 20 | State a clear view, give two reasons with a personal example, answer the opposite view, end with a suggestion. Get the format (greeting, self-introduction, closing) automatic | One post of about 250 characters in 20 minutes |
| Composition | 60 | Plan for 10 minutes. One clear stand or storyline, three body paragraphs, a strong opening and an ending that returns to the question | One full timed composition, marked against the band table above |
| Fill in the blanks and sentence correction | 20 | Near-synonyms, measure words, word order and common sentence faults (missing subject, mismatched pairs, repeated meaning) | Ten correction sentences a day, five minutes |
| Comprehension one and two | 48 | Find the point of each paragraph, answer in your own words, quote the passage only when asked | One long passage under timing, checked line by line |
| Summary | 12 | Keep the who, what and result. Cut examples, quotes and description. Aim for about 80 characters | Two summaries a week |
| Oral | 40 | Watch a 2-minute news or feature clip, give a 2-minute talk with a view and an example, then answer three follow-up questions | Three clips a week, recorded and played back |
Our SEC Chinese oral guide has a full Higher Chinese talk structure and practice questions for the discussion.
Model answers to study
These short models were written by our team to show what the top band descriptions look like in practice. They are not SEAB answers.
Forum post (practice prompt):
Why it reaches the top band: a clear stand in the second sentence, three reasons, the first backed by a personal example, a fair answer to the other side, and a practical suggestion. The linking words 首先, 其次, 当然 and 因此 make the order easy to follow, and it is comfortably above the 220-character minimum.
Composition opening (practice prompt):
Why it works: it opens on a scene every Singapore reader knows, states the view the question asks for, and sets up the essay's line of argument. A plan for the body would be one paragraph on how technology keeps families apart in distance connected, one on how misuse does cause distance, with a fair example, and one on what each person can do, before an ending that returns to the opening scene.
Summary (practice passage and an 80-character version).
Why it works: the three lists of tasks shrink to three verbs, the volunteer's long quote becomes one sentence, and the farmer's view is kept because it is a separate point.

How hard is it to score in Higher Chinese?
We could not find any official grade distribution for Higher Chinese. SEAB's results releases give cohort-wide figures only. For the 2025 O-Level, 86.9% of 22,468 candidates got C6 or better in at least five subjects. The best official signal of who takes the subject is MOE's 2018 parliamentary reply: about 30% of O-Level Chinese students also took Higher Chinese, up about 4 percentage points over the previous decade.
MOE has said O-Level grades are standards-referenced, not set on a bell curve, so there is no fixed share of A1s, and SEAB does not publish the marks behind each grade. For the decision itself, the useful question is whether your child can reach C6 in both English and Higher Chinese, because that is what earns the 2 bonus points.
Should my child take Higher Chinese at upper secondary?
Higher Chinese is worth it when the extra papers will not pull down the rest of the results. Use the table to weigh it up.
| Point | Take Higher Chinese | Stay with G3 Chinese |
|---|---|---|
| Scores comfortably in school Chinese tests and reads Chinese by choice | Works hard just to hold a pass in Chinese | |
| Aiming for JC, where 2 bonus points can matter | Aiming for poly, where the JC bonus does not apply | |
| Has room in the week for a third Chinese paper's practice | Already stretched across many subjects | |
| English is safely at C6 or better | Needs the time to lift English or Maths instead |
Two practical points help the decision. First, a Higher Chinese pass at D7 or better has, under current JC rules, exempted students from H1 Mother Tongue in JC and met the university Mother Tongue requirement, which frees a JC timetable slot. Second, the 2 bonus points need English at C6 or better too, so a student weak in English gets no bonus from Higher Chinese alone. Our Higher Chinese from PSLE to Sec 1 guide covers who can start it in Sec 1.
Every Mother Tongue syllabus in the 2027 SEC
SEAB has given every subject a new K code. Use the new code when you download a syllabus or buy practice papers labelled for 2027.

| Chinese | G2 | K220 | 1196 |
| Chinese | G1 | K120 | 1202 |
| Higher Malay | G3 | K356 | 1117 |
| Malay | G3 | K321 | 1148 |
| Malay (Special Programme) | G3 | K365 | 1133 |

| Tamil | G3 | K322 | 1157 |
| Tamil | G2 | K222 | 1198 |
| Tamil | G1 | K122 | 1204 |
Non-Tamil Indian Languages are also examined at G3: Bengali K358, Gujarati K359, Hindi K360, Panjabi K361 and Urdu K362. Higher Mother Tongue is offered only at G3. No Mother Tongue 'B' syllabus is listed for school candidates in 2027, and the 'B' section below explains what that means. Our SEC syllabus codes guide lists the codes for every other subject.
G3 Chinese papers and marks (K320)
G3 Chinese is the old O-Level Chinese. It has four parts and, unlike Higher Chinese, a reading-aloud task and a listening paper.
| Paper | Time | Marks | Weight | What it tests |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 Writing | 2 hours | 60 | 30% | Email, 20 marks, at least 150 characters (reply to an email or write one from material). Composition, 40 marks, at least 300 characters |
| Paper 2 Language use and reading | 1 hour 30 min | 70 | 35% | Cloze 5, word replacement 10, comprehension one (multiple choice on 2 to 3 practical texts) 20, comprehension two (open-ended on 2 passages) 35 |
| Oral | About 15 min | 50 | 25% | 10 minutes to read the passage and watch the video silently, then reading aloud (10) and a conversation with the examiner about the clip (40) |
| Listening | About 30 min | 20 | 10% | 10 multiple-choice questions on short dialogues and longer recordings |
The oral and listening together carry 70 marks and 35% of the grade, the same as the reading paper. That is why the "chinese o level oral" search matters so much: a student who freezes in the conversation can lose more marks there than in the whole email task.
G2 and G1 Chinese papers
G2 and G1 Chinese shift weight towards the oral, and both put more of the exam on a computer.
| Part | G2 Chinese (K220) | G1 Chinese (K120) |
|---|---|---|
| Writing | 2 hours, 60 marks, 30%. Email 120+ characters, composition 240+ characters | 30 min, 10 marks, 10%. A reply to an online post, 75+ characters, typed with hanyu pinyin input |
| Language use and reading | 1 hour 30 min, 60 marks, 30%. An electronic paper answered on computer, 28 questions | 40 min, 25 marks, 25%. 15 multiple-choice questions on computer |
| Oral | About 15 min, 60 marks, 30%. Reading aloud 20, conversation 40 | About 15 min, 45 marks, 45%. Reading aloud 15, conversation 30 |
| Listening | About 30 min, 20 marks, 10% | About 30 min, 20 marks, 20% |
At G1 the oral alone is 45% of the grade, so speaking practice is the best use of revision time. Our G1, G2 and G3 guide explains how schools set subject levels, and choosing G1, G2 or G3 helps with the decision.
Malay, Tamil, Higher Malay and Higher Tamil
The Malay and Tamil G3 papers use the same marks and weights as G3 Chinese, and the Higher papers match Higher Chinese.
| Subject | Writing | Language and reading | Oral | Listening |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Malay G3 (K321) | 60 marks, 30%, 2 hours | 70 marks, 35%, 1 hour 30 min | 50 marks, 25%. Reading aloud 10, conversation 40 | 20 marks, 10% |
| Tamil G3 (K322) | 60 marks, 30%, 2 hours | 70 marks, 35%, 1 hour 30 min | 50 marks, 25%, 10 to 15 min | 20 marks, 10% |
| Higher Malay (K356) | 80 marks, 40%, 2 hours | 80 marks, 40%, 1 hour 45 min, summary 12 | 40 marks, 20%. Talk of up to 2 min 20, discussion 20 | None |
| Higher Tamil (K357) | 80 marks, 40%, 2 hours | 80 marks, 40%, 1 hour 45 min | 40 marks, 20%, 10 to 15 min | None |
Is the Chinese oral computer-based?
Partly. SEAB has run the Mother Tongue orals in its e-Examination format, the e-Oral, since 2017, and it says this continues for the SEC. The e-Oral covers Paper 3 of Chinese, Malay, Tamil, Higher Chinese, Higher Malay and Higher Tamil at G3.
- What is on the screen. The student prepares at a computer station, watching the video clip and, for G3 Chinese, reading the passage, during the 10 minutes of preparation.
- What is live. The reading aloud, conversation and Higher Chinese discussion are with examiners in the room, who ask the follow-up questions.
- Written papers on screen. G2 Chinese Paper 2 and both G1 written papers are answered on a computer, according to the 2027 syllabuses.
- Try it first. SEAB has an online e-Oral tutorial at myexams.seab.gov.sg/eoral/eoral.html that shows the screens a candidate sees.
For how to read aloud, structure an answer to the clip and handle follow-up questions, our SEC Chinese oral guide has model answers, a phrase bank and a Higher Chinese talk structure. We don't repeat that here.
Mother Tongue grades you need for JC, MI and university
Two rule sets apply, depending on the cohort. The 2026 Sec 4 students apply through the 2027 Joint Admissions Exercise (JAE) with O-Level results. The 2027 Sec 4 students sit the SEC and apply through the 2028 Post-Secondary Admissions Exercise (PSE).
| Requirement | 2027 JAE (O-Level) | 2028 PSE (SEC) |
|---|---|---|
| Mother Tongue at G3 or O-Level | A1 to D7 | A1 to D7 |
| Mother Tongue at G2 | Not applicable | Grade 1 to 5 |
| Mother Tongue at G1 | Not applicable | Grade A to D |
| Higher Mother Tongue | A1 to E8 | A1 to E8 |
| Mother Tongue 'B' | Merit or Pass | Not listed |
| JC aggregate | L1R5, gross 20 or below | L1R4, gross 16 or below, all G3 |
| MI aggregate | L1R4, gross 20 or below | L1R4, gross 20 or below, all G3 |
| English and Higher MTL both A1 to C6 | 2 bonus points | 2 bonus points |
| Bonus point cap | 4 (plus 2 for a language elective programme) | 3 (plus 2 for a language elective programme) |
The same minimums apply to MTL-in-lieu languages such as French, Japanese, Hindi or Arabic, which have no Higher or 'B' version. Higher and ordinary Mother Tongue of the same language can never both count in one aggregate. If Higher Chinese is your L1, Chinese cannot be a relevant subject, and the reverse. MOE works out your L1R4 twice, once with English and once with Higher Mother Tongue as L1, and uses the better qualifying score.
The Higher Mother Tongue bonus is a single line in MOE's tables for both exercises: 2 points when English and Higher Mother Tongue are both A1 to C6. There is no 1-point tier for a lower Higher Mother Tongue grade, and no bonus if English is below C6, however well the student does in Higher Chinese.
Worked example (MOE's own). A 2027 SEC student has English C6, a Humanities A1, Maths A1, Science B3, Higher Chinese B4, an O-Level Chinese A1 sat in Sec 3 in 2026, and a CCA grade of Excellent.
| English as L1 | Higher Chinese as L1 | |
|---|---|---|
| L1 | English C6 = 6 | Higher Chinese B4 = 4 |
| R1 Humanities | A1 = 1 | A1 = 1 |
| R2 Maths or Science | Maths A1 = 1 | Maths A1 = 1 |
| R3 | Science B3 = 3 | Science B3 = 3 |
| R4 | O-Level Chinese A1 = 1 | English C6 = 6 (Chinese is barred) |
| Gross L1R4 | 12 | 15 |
| Bonus (CCA 2 + English and HMTL 2 = 4, capped) | 3 | 3 |
| Net L1R4 | 9 | 12 |
MOE uses the English version, net 9. Higher Chinese still earns its place through the bonus points, even though it does not appear in the sum. MOE also confirms that an O-Level Mother Tongue grade from Sec 3 in 2026 can be combined with 2027 SEC results.
Try your own numbers. The calculator covers L1R5, L1R4 and ELR2B2 with bonus points.
Calculate your L1R4, ELR2B2 or L1R5
Pick your admissions year, then enter English and your other subjects with their grades. The calculator picks the subjects the way MOE counts them.
For the first SEC cohort: sitting the SEC in 2027 and applying in the 2028 Post-Secondary Admissions Exercise (PSE), which MOE runs in place of the JAE.
Other subjects

Our L1R4 and JC admission from 2028 guide and PSE 2028 guide cover the full aggregate rules.
University and JC Mother Tongue. Under the current rules set out by the JCs, students take H1 Mother Tongue in JC1 if they got D7 or better in Mother Tongue, or E8 or below in Higher Mother Tongue. A D7 or better in Higher Mother Tongue exempts them and counts as meeting the Mother Tongue requirement for local universities. Otherwise universities ask for at least an S in H1 Mother Tongue or a Pass in Mother Tongue 'B'. MOE has not yet published SEC-specific wording for this, so check with the JC after posting.
What if my child misses the Mother Tongue grade?
Missing the grade does not shut the JC door, but the margin is narrower under the PSE.
- Check conditional admissionFor JC in the 2028 PSE, a gross L1R4 of 12 or below, or 13 to 16 with A1 or A2 in all four relevant subjects. For MI, 15 or below, or 16 to 20 with A1 or A2 in all four.
- Avoid an Absent gradeA student marked Absent in Mother Tongue cannot be admitted conditionally. Sit every paper, including the oral.
- Resit in Year 1A conditionally admitted JC student must get the required grade by the end of JC1, at G1, G2 or G3, or move to Year 2 of an MI course.
- Use the 'B' route in JCThese students can offer Mother Tongue 'B' in JC or MI, with the exam at the end of JC1 or in JC2.
- Keep other routes openFill the PSE choices with MI and polytechnic courses as well, so a missed grade does not leave the form short.
For the 2027 JAE, the conditional bar is a gross L1R5 of 15 or below, or 16 to 20 with A1 or A2 in all five relevant subjects. Our failed the SEC or O-Level guide covers retakes and private candidature.
Mother Tongue 'B' under the SEC
Mother Tongue 'B' (Chinese 'B', Malay 'B', Tamil 'B') was a less demanding syllabus for students who struggled with the language. Under the O-Level its Merit or Pass met the JC Mother Tongue requirement but could not be counted in L1R5.
Under the SEC, G1 and G2 Mother Tongue now give students a lower level that still meets the JC and MI requirement, at grade D (G1) or grade 5 (G2). MOE's 2028 PSE page lists those levels and no 'B' grade. SEAB says Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents who want to register for Mother Tongue 'B' as private candidates can write to SEAB. In JC and MI, students will still take either H1 Mother Tongue or Mother Tongue 'B', depending on the subject they took at secondary school.
Can my child be exempted from Mother Tongue?
Only in two cases, according to MOE:
- Returning from overseas with no chance to learn an official Mother Tongue, a Non-Tamil Indian Language or an approved foreign or Asian language for a sustained period.
- Special educational needs with severe difficulty coping with learning overall.
Apply through the school before the first quarter of the year of the national Mother Tongue exam, so for the 2027 SEC, before the first quarter of 2027. MOE decides case by case and asks families to try an official Mother Tongue for at least a semester first. Finding the language hard is not one of the two grounds MOE lists.
The other route is a language in lieu: French, German or Japanese, or Arabic, Burmese or Thai. Families arrange private lessons, and the same JC minimum grades apply.
Key dates: 2026 to 2028

- Mar 2027Private candidate details (expected)SEAB plans to publish 2027 SEC registration details for private candidates.
- Jul to Aug 2027SEC MTL orals and listening (expected)SEAB says these come before the September papers. Last year's mid-year orals ran in July.

A Sec 3 into Sec 4 plan
With one sitting, a September paper is the whole exam. Work backwards from it.
- Nov to Dec (end of Sec 3)Find the weakest paper. Mark one past composition, one reading paper and one recorded oral against the SEAB marking criteria. If your child sat G3 Mother Tongue in Sec 3 for Higher Chinese, wait for the January result before deciding whether to carry on.
- Jan to MarBuild the habits. One timed composition a week, short daily reading in Chinese, and two minutes a day speaking on a news clip. Higher Chinese students add one summary of about 80 characters a week.
- Apr to JunFull timed papers. Alternate Paper 1 and Paper 2 every fortnight under exam timing. Try SEAB's e-Oral tutorial so the screens feel familiar.
- Jul to AugOrals and listening. Expect the school's oral slot in this window. Keep a weekly listening paper going for G3, G2 and G1 students.
- SepWritten papers. Revise from the error log, not new material. The other subjects follow in October, so Mother Tongue revision should end with the paper.
Two decisions belong in Sec 3, not Sec 4. If a Higher Chinese student is unlikely to reach C6 in both English and Higher Chinese, ask the school whether they should stop Higher Chinese and resit G3 Chinese in Sec 4 instead. Some schools, for example Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road), let students continue to Higher Mother Tongue in Sec 4 only with B3 or better in the Sec 3 G3 Mother Tongue paper. And if Chinese is at G2 or G1, check that the planned grade still meets the JC or MI minimum before choosing a JC route.

Common questions
Is there still a Higher Chinese O-Level in 2027?
Not under that name. The 2027 exam is Higher Chinese at G3 in the SEC, code K355, with the same papers and standard as the O-Level syllabus 1116.
When is the SEC Mother Tongue exam in 2027?
The written papers for every Mother Tongue level are in September 2027, together with English. The orals and listening papers come before that, and SEAB has not yet published the exact days.
Can my child resit Mother Tongue later in the same year?
No. The SEC has one written sitting a year. A student who misses the JC grade can be admitted conditionally if the aggregate is strong enough and must pass by the end of JC1.
What is the format of the Chinese O-Level oral?
For G3 Chinese it lasts about 15 minutes after 10 minutes of preparation: reading a passage aloud for 10 marks and a conversation about a video clip for 40 marks. The Higher Chinese oral is a talk of up to 2 minutes and a discussion, 20 marks each.
Is the Chinese oral done on a computer?
The preparation is. Students watch the video and read the passage at a computer station in SEAB's e-Oral format, and then speak with live examiners.
How many bonus points does Higher Chinese give?
Two points for JC admission when both English and Higher Mother Tongue are A1 to C6. It is a flat 2 points, not 1 or 2 depending on the grade, and it sits within the cap of 4 in the 2027 JAE and 3 in the 2028 PSE.
What Mother Tongue grade does my child need for JC?
D7 at G3 or O-Level, grade 5 at G2, grade D at G1, or E8 in Higher Mother Tongue. The same applies for Millennia Institute.
Can G2 or G1 Mother Tongue still get my child into JC?
Yes for the Mother Tongue requirement, at grade 5 (G2) or D (G1). But all the subjects counted in the JC aggregate must be G3, so G1 and G2 Mother Tongue cannot be part of L1R4.
Where can I get Higher Chinese past papers?
Printed past O-Level papers are sold through SEAB's authorised publishers, and past 1116 papers still match the K355 format. Schools provide their own prelim papers, and the free K355 syllabus has the full marking guide.
Is there a Chinese B syllabus in the SEC?
SEAB lists no 'B' syllabus for school candidates in 2027, and MOE's PSE rules list G1, G2 and G3 minimums instead. Private candidates who want Mother Tongue 'B' can write to SEAB.
Who can be exempted from Mother Tongue?
Students returning from a long stay overseas without the chance to learn an official Mother Tongue, and students with special educational needs who struggle with learning overall. Apply through the school before the first quarter of the exam year.
Can my child use a Sec 3 O-Level Chinese grade with the SEC?
Yes. MOE says an O-Level Mother Tongue taken in Sec 3 in 2026 can be combined with 2027 SEC results, and O-Level grades count as G3.
