The 2027 SEC Chinese oral explained from SEAB's K320, K355 and K220 syllabuses: the marks for reading aloud and the video conversation, what each band sounds like, a practice clip with a model answer, weak and strong replies, and a home plan for English-speaking families.
The 2027 SEC Chinese oral, which replaces the O-Level Chinese oral, is worth 50 marks or 25% of G3 Chinese (K320) and lasts about 15 minutes. Reading a passage aloud earns 10 marks and a conversation with the examiner about a short video clip earns 40. Before the exam your child gets 10 minutes to read the passage silently and watch the clip as often as they like. Higher Chinese (K355) has its own oral of about 20 minutes and 40 marks (20%): a talk of up to 2 minutes linked to a video, then a discussion. Either way, the conversation is where most oral marks are won or lost.

A useful bit of arithmetic: in all three syllabuses every raw mark is worth half a percentage point of the subject. G3 Chinese totals 200 raw marks, so a student who lifts the conversation from 24 to 32 out of 40 gains 4 percentage points, the same as 8 extra composition marks.
Reading aloud: what the 10 marks listen for
SEAB marks the passage on one 10-mark scale with four bands. The examiner is listening for two things. First, sounds: are tones and initials right, and is every word clear? Second, flow: is the pace steady, does the voice rise and fall naturally, and do pauses fall where the meaning breaks? A reader who gets most characters right but stops, restarts or reads word by word will not reach the top band.
Here is a news-style passage we wrote. The slashes mark where to breathe. Read it silently once, then aloud, and time it. Around 45 to 60 seconds is a comfortable pace.
The traps here are the ones students from English-speaking homes miss most.

In G2 Chinese, reading aloud carries 20 marks, 10 for sounds and 10 for flow, so this drill pays double.
How the 40 conversation marks are awarded
The conversation has two criteria of 20 marks, each with the same four bands. One is about what you say: a clear view, reasons, examples, and keeping the talk going. The other is about how you say it: range of words, varied sentences, pronunciation and fluency.
G3 Chinese conversation, each 20-mark criterion (our summary of the K320 guide)
Band 41 to 5Cannot give a view, stuck even with repeated prompts
Band 36 to 10A simple view that is not built on, talks only when led
Band 211 to 15Fairly full answers with examples, needs the odd prompt
Band 116 to 20Full, organised views with examples, talks freely without prompting

The key line falls between Band 3 and Band 2. SEAB's guide says a Band 3 student joins in but cannot extend their own view, and talks only when the examiner leads. One-sentence answers keep a student there however good the grammar. The fix is to stretch every answer: a view, a reason, something real from your life, and what should happen next.
A practice clip we wrote, with a model answer
This is our own material, not an SEAB paper. Read the description to your child, or film a similar scene, then allow 10 minutes before the first question.
The first question might be: 录像中的中学生做了什么?你觉得她的做法怎么样? (What did the student do, and what do you think of it?) A strong reply makes four moves, which parents can check even without Chinese.
Move
Model answer (Chinese)
Note for parents
1. Retell briefly
录像中,一位老伯伯不会用手机付款,后面排队的人越来越多。一位中学生主动上前,一步一步地教他扫码。
Two sentences only. Marks are not for describing the clip.
2. Give a view
我觉得她做得非常好,因为她不是帮老伯伯付钱,而是教他自己付。
The reason comes in the same sentence, using 不是…而是…
3. Bring in real life
我的外婆以前也不会用手机付款。去年假期,我每天晚上花十分钟教她,现在她已经能自己在巴刹买菜了。
A short true story lifts an answer into the top bands.
4. Widen it
我认为年轻人可以多陪长辈学习新科技,社区中心也可以开设简单的课程,让乐龄人士跟上社会的变化。
A suggestion invites the next question.
At a natural pace this takes about a minute, the right length for the first question.
Three follow-up questions, with a weak and a strong answer each
The examiner moves from the clip to your life and then to wider issues. These three cover the usual kinds.
Question 1: a personal experience
你有没有帮助过别人?请说说你的经历。 (Have you ever helped someone? Tell me about it.)
The weak answer is correct but gives the examiner nothing to build on. The strong one sets time and place, names the problem, gives two steps, shows the result and ends with a lesson. Linking words like 先…再… also feed the language mark.
Question 2: an opinion on a claim
有人说,现在什么都要用手机,对老年人很不公平。你同意吗? (Some say it is unfair to the elderly that everything needs a phone now. Do you agree?)
A yes-or-no question is a trap. The strong answer takes a position, gives one side with two examples, gives the other, then reframes the issue. That reframing is what "extending a view" means in the guide.
Question 3: what would you do
如果你是小贩中心的摊主,你会怎么帮助不会用电子付款的顾客? (If you ran a hawker stall, how would you help customers who cannot pay electronically?)
Promising "three things" gives a nervous student a map, and the point about the lunchtime queue shows real thought.

Higher Chinese: a 2-minute talk, then a discussion
The Higher Chinese oral rewards a planned argument more than quick replies. Students may re-watch the clip and take notes in the 10 minutes. Of the 20 talk marks, 14 are for how relevant, organised and developed the views are, and 6 for language. The discussion splits the same way, with 14 for how fully the student takes part and justifies their views.
SEAB's guide adds that the talk's purpose depends on the clip. If the clip argues a case, the talk should aim to change what listeners think or do. If it explains or describes, the talk should help listeners understand the idea and feel with it.
1State your stand in 15 secondsOne sentence that answers the topic.
2Use the clip as evidenceOne or two moments from the video, not a retelling.
3Add a point the clip does not makeFrom Singapore life or your own experience.

How to practise at home when the family mostly speaks English
Parents do not need fluent Mandarin to run practice. Your job is to keep time, ask questions and listen for length and flow. The teacher or tutor handles accuracy.

Common questions
How long is the SEC Chinese oral in 2027?
About 15 minutes for G3 and G2 Chinese and about 20 for Higher Chinese, according to SEAB. Each syllabus also gives 10 minutes to prepare before the exam.
Can my child take notes during the 10 minutes?
The Higher Chinese syllabus says yes. The G3 and G2 Chinese syllabuses only mention re-reading the passage and re-watching the clip, so ask the school how preparation runs.
Does my child have to describe everything in the video?
No. The G3 guide has no criterion for describing the clip. Its marks go to views, reasons, examples, language and keeping the conversation going.
What is different about the G2 Chinese oral?
The parts and preparation match G3, but reading aloud is worth 20 marks, so the oral is 60 marks and 30% of G2 Chinese.
My child takes Higher Chinese. Do they also sit the Chinese oral?
Only if entered for both subjects. Higher Chinese has its own talk and discussion, and no listening paper.
Can my child resit Chinese mid-year in 2027?
No. From 2027 SEAB holds one Mother Tongue written sitting a year, in September.
Will a local accent cost marks?
The guides look at whether pronunciation is accurate and clear. They do not mention accent, but wrong tones that change a word's meaning will cost marks.
