Best GP Tuition Centres in Singapore (2027): 10 General Paper Picks

Written and reviewed by Theon Teo, Founder · editorial policy

Ten General Paper tuition centres in Singapore side by side: published fees turned into a per-hour cost, class sizes, branches with the nearest MRT, trial terms and questions to ask, plus what the 8881 GP exam actually tests.

The best GP tuition centre is the one that fixes the paper costing your child the most marks. For separate essay and comprehension teaching, look at Indigo, where two tutors share each class. For the smallest published class, Ancourage Academy states 3 to 6 students, in Bishan, Woodlands or online. For a founder who taught GP in an MOE junior college, look at Irwin's Study (Bukit Timah, Novena, Marine Parade) or EDvolution (Bukit Timah). For a weaker writer, EDvolution runs a separate grammar crash course. In the east, illum.e has branches in Tampines and Marine Parade. The lowest published fee is The Thought Tailor's online JC1 class, S$95 for 2 hours.

GP is harder to shop for than H2 Maths or Chemistry because the marks depend on writing that only a careful reader can judge. So this guide asks the questions that matter for GP: who marks the essays, how often, and how many students share that marker. Every fact was read on the centre's own website on 7 November 2026. Where a fact is not on the centre's site, we say "not published" rather than guess.

How we chose these centres

We searched Google for "gp tuition centre", "best gp tuition singapore", "general paper tuition" and "jc gp tuition", and noted the centres that rank and the ones other GP listicles name. We then kept centres that meet all four tests below.

  1. Teaches GP as a named JC programmeThe centre runs a JC1 or JC2 General Paper class, not just "English" for all ages.
  2. Publishes its programmeIts website shows at least the fee, the timetable, the class size or the named GP teacher.
  3. Runs active branches or live classesIt lists a current address, or a 2026 or 2027 GP timetable.
  4. Spread of area, price and styleTogether, the 10 cover every region, GP-only specialists and multi-subject centres, small and large classes, on site and online.

All facts were checked on 7 November 2026. Fees often change in January, so confirm the current figure before you pay. No centre paid to appear here, and the detail section is in alphabetical order, not a ranking.

The per-hour figure is our own estimate. We divided the published fee by the published lesson hours. Where a centre does not publish its fee, we could not work it out.

The 10 centres in detail

Ace GP Tuition

What is distinctive. A GP-only centre with a secondary English arm. Weekly GP lessons are 2 hours, and its contact page says students can attend the same lesson in person at Bishan or online and switch between the two. Missed lessons can be caught up by recording, essays are marked with written feedback, and one-to-one online consultations are offered when needed. The founder, Kelvin Hong, lists NUS First Class Honours and four years in the Singapore Administrative Service. The centre states that all its students have scored an A or B.

Suits: a student who wants a GP specialist and the option of online lessons in a busy week. May not suit: a student who wants fewer than 8 classmates, since groups are 8 to 12.

Fees as published: S$480 a month for 4 lessons. A one-time S$80 registration fee and S$120 a semester for materials. Deposit and trial terms are not published.

Branch: Bishan Street 11 (Bishan MRT is the nearest station). The site gives no unit number.

Website: acegptuition.sg

Ask at the trial: Which slots are taught in person at Bishan? How many students are in this slot? How soon are marked essays returned?

Ancourage Academy

What is distinctive. GP classes are capped at 3 to 6 students, the smallest published range here. JC1 covers essay structure, comprehension and current affairs. JC2 moves to timed essays and exam revision. Lessons use structured debates and essay outlines, and students can message teachers on WhatsApp between lessons. Live online classes run on Microsoft Teams with the same group sizes.

Suits: a quiet student who needs to speak and be corrected every lesson, and families in the north. May not suit: a family that wants a price before calling, since fees are not published.

Fees as published: Not published. Lessons are bought in packs of 4, 12 or 24, and all materials are included with no registration or material fees. A trial class is offered at no charge, usually S$18.

Branches: 152 Bishan Street 11 #01-215 (Bishan MRT). Vista Point, 548 Woodlands Drive 44 #02-16 (Woodlands South MRT).

Website: ancourage.academy

Ask at the trial: What is the fee per lesson for JC GP? How long is each lesson? Who marks the essays?

EDvolution Learning Studio

What is distinctive. The GP programme is taught by Jonathan Liew, a former MOE teacher at Victoria Junior College with over 12 years of GP and English teaching. Small classes come with one-to-one consultations. There are three tracks: a JC1 and JC2 GP class, an A-Level grammar crash course for weaker writers, and a JC2 content boot camp for strong writers who need more examples.

Suits: a student whose grammar is costing language marks, or a JC2 student who needs content fast. May not suit: a family that wants published fees or class sizes, since neither is on the site.

Fees as published: Not published. A one-to-one consultation is offered at no charge, and students are asked to bring recent exam scripts.

Branch: 557 Bukit Timah Road, Crown Centre #02-09, about 5 minutes from Botanic Gardens or Tan Kah Kee MRT. Evening slots run Monday to Friday, with four Saturday slots and one on Sunday.

Website: edvolution.com.sg

Ask at the trial: How many students are in the class? Does Mr Liew teach every lesson? Which track fits my child's last script?

illum.e

What is distinctive. Each 2-hour lesson introduces a skill, then sets tasks with feedback in class. Weekly assignments are marked, debates are held in class, and personal consultations outside class are included in the fee. Its curriculum lead is Timothy Joshua Chia-Lee, a former MOE Subject Head of English, and its JC2 lead, Liew Shan Hao, taught for 8 years in MOE schools and JCs. The centre states that 97% of its JC and IP students scored A or B in 2025.

Suits: a student who wants regular one-to-one time with a GP teacher on top of class, at a branch in most regions. May not suit: a student who prefers a lecture with no speaking, since lessons include debates.

Fees as published: S$100 a 2-hour lesson for JC1 and IP Year 5, S$105 for JC2 and IP Year 6, consultations included. Registration, deposit and trial terms are not published.

Branches: Bukit Timah Shopping Centre #B2-09 and #03-50 (Beauty World MRT). Novena Square 2 #04-52/54 (Novena MRT). Hougang Green Shopping Mall #02-06/07 (Hougang or Buangkok MRT). Tampines Point #08-04 (Tampines MRT). Parkway Centre #04-08, Marine Parade Central (Dakota, Eunos or Paya Lebar MRT). 134 Jurong Gateway Road #01-311 (Jurong East MRT). Online lessons are also offered.

Website: illum.education

Ask at the trial: How often can my child book a consultation? Which tutor takes this slot all year? Is there a registration fee?

Indigo Education Group

What is distinctive. Each GP class is co-taught by two tutors, one for Paper 1 essays and one for Paper 2 comprehension. Two formats run: one covers both papers every session, the other takes one component each session (essay, short answers, summary or the application question) around a monthly theme. The Dean of English, Shereen Ng, taught GP at Hwa Chong Institution and was English Level Head at Temasek JC. The centre states a 63.2% distinction rate.

Suits: a student who is strong in one paper and weak in the other. May not suit: a student who wants live online lessons, which the GP page does not offer (recordings are available instead).

Fees as published: Tuition fee not published. A S$75 registration fee plus GST is non-refundable and a S$100 deposit is paid on registration. A trial lesson is offered at no charge. Missed lessons can be replaced in person the same week or watched on video within 7 days.

Branches: Balmoral Plaza, 271 Bukit Timah Road (Newton or Stevens MRT). Bukit Timah Shopping Centre #01-01 (Beauty World MRT). Jurong Summit, 8 Jurong Town Hall Road #29-06 (Jurong East MRT). Parkway Parade Office Tower #06-03 (Marine Parade MRT). Tampines Plaza 1 #03-02 (Tampines MRT). United Square Office Tower #17-01/02 (Novena MRT).

Website: indigo.com.sg

Ask at the trial: What is the monthly fee with GST? How many students are in this slot, given classes start from 5? Do the same two tutors stay all year?

Irwin's Study

What is distinctive. A GP-only centre founded in 2009 by Irwin See, a former MOE junior college teacher of GP and History, including at Temasek JC. He holds a Master's from Oxford with distinction, a first-class degree from the LSE and a PGDE from NIE. Slots run on weekday evenings and weekends at three branches, plus weekend online slots. The centre states that more than 80% of its students score a distinction each year.

Suits: a student who wants a GP-only centre with evening slots in three areas. May not suit: a family that wants to compare prices online, since fees are given only on enquiry.

Fees as published: Not published. The site asks families to contact the centre. Class size and trial terms are not published.

Branches: Bukit Timah Shopping Centre #B2-13 (Beauty World MRT). 1 Goldhill Plaza #02-05 (Novena MRT). Eastgate, 46 East Coast Road #07-04 (Marine Parade MRT). Most slots are 2 hours, with two 1.5-hour weekend slots.

Website: irwins-study.com

Ask at the trial: Does Mr See teach this slot? What is the monthly fee? How many essays are marked each term?

Learners' Lodge

What is distinctive. A JC-only centre that teaches the main A-Level subjects, so GP can sit alongside H2 classes at one branch. Its GP lessons use a thematic approach built on past-year questions and examiner comments. The named GP tutors are Mr Tan Chwee Bock and Mr Aw Meng How. If three friends sign up together, a new class can be opened.

Suits: a student who wants GP and an H2 subject at the same centre, with weekend slots. May not suit: a family that wants a published fee or class size.

Fees as published: Not published. A trial class is offered, with cost and terms not published. A seat is held only once fees are paid.

Branches with GP slots (2026): Bishan Street 22, Kovan (Kovan MRT), Kembangan (next to Kembangan MRT) and Jurong (near Jurong East MRT). GP runs mainly on Saturdays and Sundays, plus a Thursday evening at Kembangan.

Website: learnerslodge.com.sg

Ask at the trial: What is the fee and the class size? Which tutor teaches this branch? Are 2027 slots out yet?

The Rationale Thinking Learning Centre

What is distinctive. Mr Edwin Wong coaches every GP and IP English class himself. He lists over 14 years of teaching and working experience, including at banks in London, Hong Kong and Singapore. Classes use resources he curates, and new students may first be invited to a personal consultation. The 2027 timetable is still being filled in, with 2-hour sessions on Wednesdays, Fridays and weekends.

Suits: a student who wants one teacher for the whole year. May not suit: a family that wants the lowest fee, since this is the highest published per-hour fee here.

Fees as published: S$540 a month, S$135 a lesson or S$1,620 a term of 12 lessons. New JC2 students joining from May pay S$5 more a lesson. No deposit or registration fee. The single trial lesson is charged only if the student goes on to enrol.

Branch: 213 Upper Thomson Road #01-01. The site does not name an MRT station.

Website: therationalethinking.com

Ask at the trial: How many students are in the class? What is the trial fee if we enrol? When is the 2027 timetable final?

The Thought Tailor

What is distinctive. A GP and English centre that publishes per-lesson fees and a long timetable. The 2026 schedule lists about four to eight GP slots per level at each branch, many on weekday evenings, plus three or four online slots per level. The course covers content and skills for both papers and is led by former MOE GP teachers. The centre offers a financial assistance scheme of up to 50% off fees for eligible students.

Suits: a student who needs a GP slot that fits round CCA, and families who want a clear price. May not suit: a family that wants a stated class size, which is not published.

Fees as published: JC1 S$100 a lesson on site and S$95 online. JC2 S$105 on site and S$100 online. Slots are 2 hours. Registration and trial terms are not published. These are 2026 fees, and the 2027 schedule is not out yet.

Branches: Coronation Plaza #03-15 (3 minutes from Tan Kah Kee MRT). Vision Exchange #02-07 (3 minutes from Jurong East MRT). Goldhill Plaza, Unit 187A (5 minutes from Novena MRT).

Website: thethoughttailor.com

Ask at the trial: How many students are in this slot? Who teaches it? What will the 2027 fee be?

Zenith Education Studio

What is distinctive. The largest network here, with 14 branches and six named GP tutors. They include Ariffin (Finn), who taught for a decade at Anderson JC and Raffles Institution, and Zachary Tham, a former journalist at The Straits Times and CNA. Lessons are 2 hours weekly. A missed lesson can be made up in another class that week or watched as a recording. The centre states that two-thirds of its GP students score an A.

Suits: a student who learns well in a lecture-style class and values a branch near home. May not suit: a student who needs individual attention in class, since classes hold up to 60.

Fees as published: S$100 a lesson for JC1 joining before July and JC2 joining by 31 March, and S$105 for later joiners, before GST. The monthly figure is S$420 for one subject, falling for two or more. A S$400 deposit per subject is refunded in the final month, and a month's notice is needed to keep it. No registration or material fees. A trial class is offered at no charge.

Branches: Bishan, Bukit Panjang, Bukit Timah, Buona Vista, Jurong East, Jurong Point, King Albert Park, Kovan, Marymount/Upper Thomson, Paya Lebar, Potong Pasir, Serangoon, Tampines and Woodlands. The GP page does not say which run GP, so check the timetable.

Website: zenitheducationstudio.com

Ask at the trial: Which branch runs GP at my child's level? How many students are in this slot? Who marks the essays, the tutor or an assistant?

What does the GP exam actually test?

General Paper is an H1 subject, syllabus 8881, and every JC student takes it. It has two papers taken at separate sittings, each 1 hour 30 minutes and each worth 50%. Both are marked for content and for language, so a strong argument in weak English still loses marks. Our GP Paper 1 and Paper 2 guide goes through each question type.

Paper 1: EssayPaper 2: Comprehension
Time and weight1 hour 30 minutes, 50%1 hour 30 minutes, 50%
TaskOne essay of 500 to 800 words, from 8 questionsAll 8 or 9 questions on three passages of about 1,200 words in total
Marks50: content 30, language 2050: content 35, language 15 (language is marked on the summary and application answers)
What it coversIssues of local, regional and global significance across society and culture, economics, politics, the arts and humanities, science and technology, and the environmentComprehension and analysis of Passage 1 (9 to 11 marks), an 8-mark summary of Passage 2, links between passages (4 to 6 marks) and a 12-mark application question

The 12-mark application question (AQ) is the single largest item in Paper 2. It asks the student to apply the passages' ideas to their own society, usually Singapore, which is why current affairs and local examples matter. SEAB assesses two skills: critical and inventive thinking (analysing, evaluating and building arguments) and communication (clear, accurate English with a good range of vocabulary).

A good GP centre should do three things for the exam: mark full essays against the content and language bands, practise the summary and AQ under time, and build a bank of examples across the six content areas. Our GP tuition page explains how we approach both papers one-to-one.

GP is graded A to E for a pass, then S and U. It always counts in the University Admission Score at up to 10 of the 70 points: an A is 10, a B 8.75 and a C 7.5. Our A-Level grading system guide shows how the full score is built.

Centre, home tutor or online?

The cheapest GP hour is usually an online group class. The most tailored hour is one-to-one, where every minute goes on one student's own scripts. Here is how the published centre fees above compare with the JC rates on our rate card.

PointCentre group classOne-to-one home tutor
Cost per hourAbout S$47.50 to S$67.50, where fees are published (centre fees above)S$45 to S$60 part-time, S$65 to S$90 full-time, S$90 to S$130 ex-MOE (our JC rate card)
Class size3 to 60, by centreOne student
Essay markingWeekly assignments, marked alongside a classEvery essay marked line by line, rewritten in the lesson
PaceSet by the class timetable and themesSet by the student's weakest paper and school test dates
Best forA student who needs regular practice, debate and a set scheduleA student stuck at a C or below, or whose language marks lag their ideas

A worked example: a JC1 student in a 2-hour weekly GP class at S$100 a lesson pays S$100 a week. One 1.5-hour lesson a week with a part-time tutor at S$45 to S$60 an hour costs S$67.50 to S$90, and with a full-time tutor at S$65 to S$90 an hour it costs S$97.50 to S$135. Many families use a centre for the weekly class and add a few one-to-one sessions before promos or prelims, when one weak essay type or a poor AQ can cost a whole grade.

How to choose a GP tuition centre

  1. Find the paper that costs the mostLook at the last school paper. Low essay content marks, low language marks, a weak summary or a weak AQ each need a different fix. Ask the centre which it would work on first.
  2. Ask who marks the essaysGP improves through marked writing. Ask how many essays are marked a term, who marks them and how fast they come back.
  3. Compare cost per hourTurn every quote into a cost per hour and add registration, materials, deposit and GST. Our table does this for the published fees.
  4. Check the class size for your slotAsk for the number in the exact class your child would join, not the average.
  5. Book one trialAsk what it costs and whether it is refunded if you do not continue. Bring a recent marked script.
  6. Review after one termCompare the next school paper with the last. If the marks have not moved after about 8 to 10 lessons, ask the centre for a plan or switch.

Trial-lesson checklist

  • Who teaches the class for the whole year, and who covers if they are away?
  • How many students are in this exact slot?
  • How many full essays are marked each term, and how quickly are they returned?
  • Is the marking done against the 8881 content and language bands?
  • Are the summary and the 12-mark application question practised under time?
  • How are examples and current affairs built up across the six content areas?
  • What does a missed lesson cost, and is there a recording?
  • What notice is needed to stop, and is any deposit refunded?

Common questions

How much does GP tuition at a centre cost in Singapore?

Among the 10 centres we checked on 7 November 2026, published GP fees run from S$95 to S$135 for a 2-hour lesson, or about S$47.50 to S$67.50 an hour. Five centres do not publish a fee, and registration, materials, deposits and GST can add to the total.

What is the best GP tuition centre in Singapore?

There is no single best centre. Indigo splits each class between an essay tutor and a comprehension tutor, Ancourage Academy has the smallest published classes, Irwin's Study and EDvolution are led by former MOE junior college GP teachers, and Zenith has the most branches.

Which GP centres have the smallest classes?

Ancourage Academy publishes 3 to 6 students and illum.e a 1 to 8 ratio. Indigo classes start from 5, Ace GP Tuition runs 8 to 12, and Zenith holds up to 60. The other five do not publish a class size.

Do GP tuition centres offer trial lessons?

Most do. Ancourage Academy, Indigo and Zenith offer a trial at no charge, The Rationale Thinking charges for its trial only if the student enrols, and EDvolution offers a one-to-one consultation at no charge.

Is a GP-only centre better than a multi-subject centre?

Not by itself. A GP-only centre such as Irwin's Study or Ace GP Tuition may give more GP depth, while a multi-subject centre such as Learners' Lodge or Zenith lets a student take GP and an H2 subject at one branch. Who marks the essays matters more than the label.

When should my child start GP tuition?

JC1 is the usual start, because Paper 1 needs a long build-up of examples across many topics. A student who is strong in English may wait until the JC1 promotional exam shows which paper is weaker. Starting in JC2 works best when the problem is specific, such as the application question.

Can GP tuition really raise a grade?

It can when the weakness is a skill that practice fixes, such as essay structure, the summary or the application question. Language marks and content knowledge take longer, so expect several marked essays before the school grade moves.

What does the GP A-Level exam include?

Two papers of 1 hour 30 minutes, each 50 marks. Paper 1 is one essay of 500 to 800 words from 8 questions. Paper 2 is comprehension on three passages, with an 8-mark summary and a 12-mark application question.

How many rank points is GP worth?

GP always counts in the University Admission Score, at up to 10 of the 70 points. An A is worth 10, a B 8.75 and a C 7.5.

Are these centres paid to be listed?

No. We chose them by the criteria above and took every fact from each centre's own website on 7 November 2026.
