The first SEC cohort is in Sec 4 in 2027. Here are MOE's 2027 term dates, the SEC exam months SEAB has set, when orals, prelims, Poly EAE and DSA-JC fall, the L1R4 and ELR2B2 targets for the 2028 PSE, and what to do in each term.
Sec 4 in 2027 is the year the first cohort sits the SEC. English and Mother Tongue written papers move to September, the rest follow from October, and results in mid-January 2028 feed the new Post-Secondary Admissions Exercise (PSE), which uses L1R4 for JC and ELR2B2 net 22 for polytechnic.
This plan sets out the whole year, term by term: what the school calendar looks like, which national exam papers fall when, where WAs and prelims usually sit, when to act on Poly EAE and DSA-JC, and what score each route needs. If you are new to the SEC itself, start with our SEC 2027 explainer.
Who is in Sec 4 in 2027?
Students who entered Secondary 1 in 2024 are the first SEC cohort. They were also the first to start secondary school under Full Subject-Based Banding, so they take each subject at G1, G2 or G3 and receive one certificate that lists every subject with its level.

2026 O-Level results due 13 to 15 Jan 2027
What SEAB has said, in its own terms: English and Mother Tongue written papers are held in September each year, the other written papers run from October to November, and oral, listening and practical components stay before the written papers as per current practice. There is only one written sitting a year for every Mother Tongue level, so the June Mother Tongue paper that O-Level students had is gone.
The 2027 K300 English syllabus says the oral is delivered via computer. Part 1 is a Planned Response of up to 2 minutes to a video clip and prompt shown on screen, and Part 2 is a Spoken Interaction on a related topic. The oral is worth 30 marks, 20% of the English grade, and takes about 20 minutes including 10 minutes of preparation. Source: SEAB K300 English syllabus 2027 (PDF).
Weighted Assessments (WAs) and the preliminary exams (prelims) are set by each school, not by SEAB, so dates vary. This is the pattern most secondary schools follow, described generally. Always check your school's own assessment plan, which is usually shared early in Term 1.
Term
Typical school assessment
What it is for
Term 1
WA1, often in the second half of the term
A first check on Sec 4 content, often one or two components per subject
Term 2
WA2, or a mid-year exam in some schools
Wider coverage, often a full paper in some subjects
Term 3
Prelims, usually from late Term 3 into the September holidays
Full mock papers under exam conditions
Term 4
National exams
No school exams once the SEC papers start
For the SEC cohort, many schools are expected to bring English and Mother Tongue prelims forward so that they come before the September papers. That is our reading of the new calendar, not an MOE rule, so check your school's dates. Our WA1, WA2 and SA2 guide explains how school assessments are weighted.

Term 1 (4 January to 12 March): set the levels and the target
Confirm every subject level. The SEC certificate shows each subject at G1, G2 or G3. For JC, every subject in L1R4 must be G3. For polytechnic, only the second best subject (B2) may be G2. Our SEC grading system guide shows how mixed levels are counted.
Pick a route target now. Work out a realistic L1R4 and ELR2B2 from Sec 3 results with the calculator further down, then decide which subjects can move the score most.
Book in WA1 revision. Treat WA1 as the first honest read of the year, not a final verdict.
Start a DSA-JC or Poly EAE portfolio. Gather certificates, CCA records and project work now, while the year is calm.
Watch the year above. The final O-Level results are due between 13 and 15 January 2027 (tentative), and JAE cut-offs that follow are the best guide you will have to how competitive courses are.
March holidays (13 to 21 March): fix the weakest counted subject
Use the week to close gaps from WA1. One full timed paper in each core subject, marked honestly against the mark scheme, tells you more than a week of rereading notes.
Term 2 (22 March to 28 May): applications and WA2
WA2 or mid-year exams. These are usually the widest school tests before prelims.
DSA-JC opens. In 2026, students applied directly to JCs from Tuesday 5 May, with each college setting its own closing date. Expect a similar start in May 2027.
ITE-EAE. In 2026, applications ran from 20 to 26 May. Check ITE's dates for 2027 if a Higher Nitec course interests your child.
Shortlist Poly EAE courses. Read each course's interview, portfolio or aptitude test requirements before the June holidays.
No June Mother Tongue paper. O-Level students sat Mother Tongue in early June. SEC students do not, so the single September sitting has to be planned for from now.
June holidays (29 May to 27 June): the most valuable four weeks
Poly EAE applications. The 2026 window for O-Level students was Thursday 25 June to Wednesday 1 July. The 2027 window for SEC students is expected in late June, but MOE has not published it yet. See our polytechnic cut-off points 2027 guide for course aggregates.
Oral practice. Orals are expected in July, only weeks after the holidays.
Timed papers. Move from topical practice to full papers, especially in English and Mother Tongue, which come first.
Keep rest days. A tired student going into Term 3 loses more than a few holiday hours of revision would gain.
Term 3 (28 June to 3 September): orals and prelims
Mother Tongue listening and orals, expected in July. In 2026, Mother Tongue listening was on 7 July and the oral exams ran from 13 to 17 July. A school usually gives each student a single slot within those days.
DSA-JC Phase 1 outcomes. In 2026, schools made Phase 1 offers by Tuesday 11 August, and parents accepted from 12 to 14 August by 5pm. Phase 2 offers came by Monday 7 September and acceptance ran from 8 to 11 September.
Prelims. Expect English and Mother Tongue prelims first, possibly in late July or August, then the other subjects. Mark each paper, log every repeated mistake and redo those questions within a week.
CCA records by September. MOE's PSE timeline asks students to check that CCA attainment is accurate by September 2027 and to report errors to the school immediately, because CCA grades become bonus points.
September holidays (4 to 12 September) and the September papers
English and Mother Tongue written papers are in September 2027. SEAB has not said whether they fall before, during or after the September school holidays, so keep the whole month clear of trips and big commitments until the timetable is out. Teachers' Day on Friday 3 September is a school holiday.
Term 4 (13 September to 19 November): practicals and the written papers
Practicals first. In 2026, Music practicals ran from 22 to 25 September and science practicals from 30 September (Chemistry) to 13 October (Biology). Expect a similar pattern in 2027.
Written papers from October. In 2026 the O-Level written papers ran to Tuesday 10 November. Schools used as SEC venues end term on Friday 29 October 2027, so some students will be on study leave at home for the later papers.
DSA-JC decisions. In 2026, a family that accepted a DSA-JC offer but wanted the JAE instead had to cancel by 5pm on 7 October. Expect a similar cut-off in 2027.
Deepavali is on Thursday 28 October 2027.

L1R4 is English or Higher Mother Tongue (L1), plus one Humanities subject (R1), one Maths or Science subject (R2), one more Humanities, Maths or Science subject (R3) and any one best subject (R4). JC applicants also need G3 English A1 to C6 and G3 Mathematics or Additional Mathematics A1 to D7. For Mother Tongue, they need A1 to D7 at G3, grade 1 to 5 at G2, grade A to D at G1, or Higher Mother Tongue A1 to E8. Up to 3 bonus points come off the JC aggregate, plus 2 more for a JC Language Elective Programme.
ELR2B2 is English, two subjects relevant to the course and the two best other subjects. B2 uses its G2 grade, or the G2 equivalent of a G3 grade: A1 to B3 counts as 1, B4 to C6 as 2, D7 as 3 and E8 as 4. CCA bonus points of up to 2 come off the total. Each polytechnic course will still have its own, usually much tighter, cut-off.
Wei Ling takes eight subjects, all at G3, and has a CCA grade of Excellent (2 bonus points).

L1R4 for JC. L1 English 2. R1 Combined Humanities 4 (her best Humanities). R2 Mathematics 1. R3 Additional Mathematics 3. R4 Physics 3. Gross L1R4 = 13, which meets the JC limit of 16. With 2 CCA bonus points the net score is 11.
ELR2B2 for a course that counts Mathematics and Physics as relevant. English 2. R1 Mathematics 1. R2 Physics 3. B1 Additional Mathematics 3. B2 is her next best, Chemistry B4, which maps to G2 grade 2. Gross = 11, net after 2 CCA points = 9, well inside 22.
Lifting Combined Humanities from B4 to B3 would take one point off the L1R4. That single Humanities grade is often the cheapest point to win, because every JC aggregate needs one.
Try your own child's grades here.
Calculate your L1R4, ELR2B2 or L1R5
Pick your admissions year, then enter English and your other subjects with their grades. The calculator picks the subjects the way MOE counts them.
For the first SEC cohort: sitting the SEC in 2027 and applying in the 2028 Post-Secondary Admissions Exercise (PSE), which MOE runs in place of the JAE.
Other subjects
Set each subject's level. JC and MI count G3 subjects only.
Prelims far below target. Prelims are set to be hard. Pick the two counted subjects with the most room, redo every prelim question that was lost, and do one timed paper a week in each until the national papers.
A subject is at G2. For JC, that subject cannot count in L1R4, so the other five counted subjects must carry the score at G3. For polytechnic, a G2 subject can still fill B2.
Missed the oral. Under SEAB's O-Level rules the English oral was compulsory, and a candidate who missed it received no English grade. Treat the SEC oral the same way. If your child is ill on the day, get a medical certificate and tell the school at once.
No DSA-JC or Poly EAE offer. Nothing is lost. Both are extra routes, and the PSE in January 2028 is open to every SEC candidate.
Results miss the target. MOE lets applicants combine results from up to two exam years, so an eligible student can take a fifth year or resit as a private candidate. Our guides to failed SEC or O-Level results and private candidates set out the options.
Posting result disappoints. Appeals open from posting results day. JC and MI appeals go to the school, and polytechnic and ITE appeals are made online.
Stress and sleep in Sec 4
KK Women's and Children's Hospital recommends 8 to 10 hours of sleep a day for teenagers aged 13 to 17. It links too little sleep to moodiness, stress and poor concentration, and its advice is practical.
The same bedtime and wake time every day, weekends included.
A technology curfew, with phones left outside the bedroom.
No caffeine from tea, coffee, colas or energy drinks in the evening.
Naps kept to 30 to 45 minutes, and never in the evening.
Exercise earlier in the day, and a short wind-down routine before bed.
Plan the calendar together. Put the September papers, orals and prelims on a shared wall calendar so the year feels mapped, not endless.
Protect sleep over late revision. An extra hour of sleep usually does more for a timed paper than an extra hour of notes.
Ask about the plan, not the marks. "Which topic are you fixing this week?" invites a real answer. "What did you get?" often ends the conversation.
Keep one fixed rest block a week. A CCA, a meal out or a walk keeps Sec 4 from swallowing everything.
Know the warning signs. Persistent poor sleep, withdrawal from friends, loss of appetite or talk of hopelessness need more than study help.

Common questions
What exam does Sec 4 take in 2027?
Sec 4 students in 2027 sit the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC), which replaces the O-Level and N-Level. Each subject is taken at G1, G2 or G3.
When is the SEC exam in 2027?
English and Mother Tongue written papers are in September 2027, and the other written papers run from October to November. Orals, listening and practicals come before the written papers.
Has SEAB released the SEC 2027 timetable?
Not as of 7 November 2026. SEAB has given the months but not the paper-by-paper days, so check its important dates page and your school's notices.
When are the SEC orals in 2027?
SEAB has not fixed the days. They are expected in July 2027, since the 2026 O-Level orals ran from 13 to 17 July 2026, and the English oral will be taken on a computer.
Is there still a June Mother Tongue exam for Sec 4 in 2027?
No. The SEC has one Mother Tongue written sitting a year, in September, for every level.
When does the 2027 school year end for Sec 4?
MOE's school year ends on Friday 19 November 2027. Schools used as SEC written exam venues end their final term on Friday 29 October 2027.
When are SEC 2027 results released?
MOE lists them for mid-January 2028. Students then have 6 calendar days to apply through the 2028 PSE.
Can Sec 4 students in 2027 apply for Poly EAE?
Yes. MOE's PSE page says Poly EAE, DSA-JC and ITE-EAE run before the SEC exams, from mid-2027. The 2026 Poly EAE window for O-Level students was 25 June to 1 July.
What L1R4 score is needed for JC in 2028?
An L1R4 gross score of 16 or better, with all five subjects at G3, makes a student eligible. Popular JCs will need much better scores, and 2028 cut-offs do not exist yet.
What ELR2B2 score is needed for polytechnic in 2028?
A net score of 22 or better, or 24 for Nursing. Only the second best subject (B2) may be taken at G2.
How much sleep should a Sec 4 student get?
KK Women's and Children's Hospital recommends 8 to 10 hours a day for teenagers aged 13 to 17.
What if my child does badly in the first SEC?
MOE allows results from up to two exam years to be combined for the PSE. A fifth year or a private candidate resit are both options.
