Sec 1 Math Tuition Singapore 2027: 12 Centres, S$27 to S$53 an Hour

Written and reviewed by Theon Teo, Founder · editorial policy

Twelve centres that teach Sec 1 and Sec 2 Maths at G3, G2 or G1, set side by side: each published fee turned into a cost per hour, class sizes, branches with the nearest MRT, trial terms and questions to ask, plus what the MOE lower secondary syllabus covers and how the Sec 3 A-Math choice is made.

For Sec 1 or Sec 2 maths, pick the centre by what your child needs most.

  • Price: MaxEdge in Tampines prints S$220 a month for Sec 1 and S$230 for Sec 2, and Matrix Math charges S$690 for ten 2-hour lessons at 12 branches.
  • The smallest group: The Math Lab teaches 3 to 4 students around one table, and Habitat Learning Centre in Novena caps its class at 6.
  • A G2 student: Math Lobby (Potong Pasir) and Sirius Mathematics (Kovan and Tampines) both timetable G2 classes of their own.
  • A teacher with school leadership experience: Sirius was founded by a former Raffles Institution maths head of department, and The Bright Room is run by a former A-Math level coordinator.
  • Learning from home: Tim Gan Math streams every class live at S$75 a lesson.

Fees come in five different units across these sites, from per lesson to per 10-lesson pack, so the table below turns each one into a cost per hour you can compare.

The 12 Sec 1 and Sec 2 maths tuition centres compared

Our per-hour figure divides the printed fee by the printed lesson hours. Where a centre gives a monthly fee, we assumed four lessons a month, which is how most of them bill.

How we chose these centres

Twelve centres passed four tests.

  1. Teaches Sec 1 and Sec 2 Maths by nameA timetabled Sec 1 or Sec 2 class, or a lower secondary maths page, on the centre's own site.
  2. Shows its programmeAt least one of fee, lesson length, class size or teacher is printed on its site.
  3. Has a current branchA listed address and a 2026 or 2027 schedule or fee table.
  4. Spreads the choiceTogether they cover every region, fees from about S$27.50 to S$52.50 an hour, groups from 3 to 12, and in-centre and live online lessons.

Two names on other Sec 1 and Sec 2 maths lists did not make it. Apex Math Tuition has no website of its own that we could find, only directory pages. The Paradigm Math site shows no Singapore Sec 1 or Sec 2 class.

No centre paid to be listed here, and the details below run in alphabetical order, not as a ranking. For a wider Sec 1 and Sec 2 list across all subjects, see our Sec 1 and Sec 2 tuition centres guide.

The 12 centres in detail

AGrader Learning Centre

AGrader teaches its secondary maths classes on the MOE G3 syllabus from its own worksheets, and it says each topic is covered 3 to 4 weeks before the school reaches it.

Every student gets its EverLoop revision app, with past-paper practice packs, term revision packs and recordings of lessons. Students can also revisit materials from up to 3 levels below, which helps a Sec 1 student whose P5 or P6 fractions and ratio are shaky. Parents receive a progress report at the end of each term.

Sec 1 to 4
  • Suits: a family that wants a branch near home, since its 20 outlets run from Woodlands and Yishun to Jurong Point, Tampines and Tiong Bahru.
  • May not suit: a parent who wants to compare a regular monthly fee before visiting, because only the trial price is printed.

Fees as published: the regular Sec 1 and Sec 2 fee is not published. New students start with a 4-lesson paid trial at S$149 plus GST for Sec 1 to 4, with no deposit or registration fee during the trial.

Branches: 20 outlets. Examples, with the closest MRT on our map check, are Westgate (Jurong East), Jurong Point (Boon Lay), Northpoint City (Yishun), Sengkang Grand Mall (Sengkang) and Central Plaza on Tiong Bahru Road (Tiong Bahru).

Ask at the trial:

  • What is the monthly fee after the four trial lessons, and how long is each lesson?
  • How many students sit in this Sec 1 class?
  • Which school topics will the class have covered by the first weighted assessment?

Habitat Learning Centre

A small Novena centre whose lower secondary maths page is written for Sec 1 and Sec 2 alone.

Classes are capped at 6, and every new student first sits a short aptitude test on number, basic algebra and early geometry, so the teacher knows the gaps before lesson one. Lessons follow its K-D-C model (Knowledge, Drill, Checks), and the centre says it lines up each lesson with the student's own school topic order. It also helps Sec 2 families think through the Sec 3 A-Math decision.

What Sec 1 and Sec 2 Maths covers

Sec 1 and Sec 2 Maths follow MOE's 2020 secondary mathematics syllabuses, which start with the 2020 Secondary One cohort. There are three levels in lower secondary, G3, G2 and G1, and two more for upper secondary electives, G3 and G2 Additional Mathematics. Our lower secondary maths subject page goes topic by topic.

Which level your child starts at

Under Full Subject-Based Banding, the PSLE score sets the usual level for most subjects at the start of Sec 1. Maths can then be taken one level higher on the strength of the PSLE Maths grade alone.

PSLE scoreUsual level for most subjects in Sec 1Maths at a more demanding level
4 to 20G3Already G3
21 to 22G2 or G3AL5 or better in Standard Maths for G3, if placed at G2
23 to 24G2AL5 or better in Standard Maths for G3
25G1 or G2As for the level placed
26 to 30 (AL7 or better in EL and Maths)G1AL5 or better for G2 or G3, AL6 Standard or AL A Foundation for G2

A child with Foundation Maths at PSLE who is otherwise placed at G3 may take Maths at G2 instead, after talking with the school. After Sec 1, a student can move up a level on school performance, or down to ease the load, and move back up later. The school makes that call. Our Sec 1 posting guide explains how posting groups work.

The algebra jump in Sec 1

PSLE Maths is mostly arithmetic and model drawing. Sec 1 G3 Maths turns quickly to letters. In the first year the syllabus covers primes and prime factorisation, HCF and LCM, negative numbers, ratio, percentage including reverse percentage, rate and speed, algebraic expressions and the nth term of a pattern, linear graphs and gradient, linear equations, angles and polygons, area and volume of prisms and cylinders, and reading statistical charts.

The step most children trip on is the fractional equation, which MOE lists by name for Sec 1:

  1. The questionSolve x/3 + (x − 2)/4 = 3.
  2. Clear the fractionsMultiply every term by 12, the LCM of 3 and 4: 4x + 3(x − 2) = 36.
  3. Expand the bracket4x + 3x − 6 = 36, so 7x − 6 = 36.
  4. Solve7x = 42, so x = 6.
  5. Check6/3 + 4/4 = 2 + 1 = 3, which matches the right-hand side.

A child who multiplies only the first fraction by 12, or forgets to multiply the minus 2 by 3, loses the mark. Those two slips are worth raising at any trial lesson.

Sec 2 builds on Sec 1

Sec 2 G3 Maths assumes the Sec 1 algebra is secure. It adds:

  • map scales and direct and inverse proportion
  • expansion and factorisation of quadratic expressions such as x² + 5x + 6 = (x + 2)(x + 3)
  • algebraic fractions, changing the subject of a formula, quadratic graphs and simple inequalities
  • simultaneous linear equations
  • congruence and similarity, Pythagoras' theorem and trigonometric ratios
  • volumes of pyramids, cones and spheres
  • averages for grouped data and probability.

Our topic pages on algebraic manipulation and simultaneous equations carry these forward into Sec 3 and 4.

How G2 and G1 differ

PointTopicG3 Maths
Linear graphs and gradientSec 1Sec 2

Quadratic factorisation and graphsSec 2Sec 3 or 4
Trigonometric ratiosSec 2Sec 3 or 4, Pythagoras in Sec 2
National exam from 2027SEC G3 Mathematics, K310SEC G2 Mathematics, K210

G1 Maths moves more slowly again. It has no equations in Sec 1 and leaves rate and speed, equations, graphs and Pythagoras' theorem to Sec 2. A centre that says it "follows MOE" should say which of these three it follows for your child.

School assessments in Sec 1 and Sec 2

There is no national exam in lower secondary. MOE removed mid-year exams at every primary and secondary level by 2023. Schools now set weighted assessments during the year, which may be termly, and an end-of-year exam. Each school sets its own dates and weightings, so ask for the assessment plan in the first week of Term 1.

MOE's assessment objectives for G3 and G2 Maths name three skills: using standard techniques, solving problems in a range of contexts, and reasoning and communicating mathematically. Many children lose marks on the third, where working and explanation are marked as well as the answer.

The Sec 2 to Sec 3 choice: E-Math and A-Math

Mathematics stays compulsory in Sec 3 and 4, and Additional Mathematics is an elective:

  • K310G3 MathematicsCompulsory in Sec 3 and 4, examined for the SEC.
  • K210G2 MathematicsCompulsory in Sec 3 and 4, examined for the SEC.
  • K341G3 A-MathAn elective.
  • K232G2 A-MathAn elective.

MOE says schools weigh each student's learning progress and needs when guiding subject choices, so the entry bar for A-Math is set by the school, usually after the Sec 2 end-of-year exam. A student who wants A-Math needs the Sec 2 quadratics, algebraic fractions and graphs to be firm, because A-Math starts from there.

Our guide to E-Math and A-Math sets out the differences, and the Sec 3 subject combinations guide shows how the choice shapes JC and poly routes.

  1. 4 Jan 2027Term 1 startsSec 1 begins with numbers, then algebra. Ask the school for its weighted assessment dates.
  2. 22 Mar 2027Term 2 startsTopic order differs by school, so compare the school scheme of work with the centre's.
  3. 29 May to 27 Jun 2027June holidaysA good window to rebuild weak Sec 1 topics before Term 3.
  4. 13 Sep 2027Term 4 startsEnd-of-year exams usually fall around now, on dates each school sets. In Sec 2 the results shape the Sec 3 subject advice.
  5. 2030 (derived)SEC exams for the 2027 Sec 1 cohortFour years after Sec 1, at the subject levels then taken.

The 2027 term dates are MOE's published calendar. The SEC year is our count from a four-year course, not an MOE date.

A child who is coping and wants steady weekly practice usually does well in a group. A child whose PSLE Maths was AL5 or below, or who is in G2 and aiming for G3, often gains more from an hour that follows only their mistakes.

How to choose

  1. Find the level firstCheck whether your child takes Maths at G3, G2 or G1 in 2027. Only Math Lobby and Sirius timetable separate G2 classes among these 12.
  2. Set a budget per hourTurn any monthly fee into an hourly cost by dividing by 8 for four 2-hour lessons. Add registration, materials and deposit.
  3. Ask for the class list sizeA number on the day matters more than "small class" on a website.
  4. Bring the school's topic orderSchools sequence Sec 1 topics differently. A good centre will say how it handles a mismatch.
  5. Watch the trial for workingDid the teacher check your child's written steps, not only the final answer? Method marks decide many Sec 1 tests.
  6. Review after the first weighted assessmentIf the mark has not moved by Term 2, ask why before paying for Term 3.

Common questions

Which Sec 1 maths tuition centre has the lowest published fee?

MaxEdge in Tampines prints S$220 a month for Sec 1, about S$27.50 an hour if there are four 2-hour lessons. Matrix Math is next at S$34.50 an hour, from S$690 for ten 2-hour lessons.

How much does Sec 1 maths tuition cost in Singapore?

At the eight centres here that print a fee, Sec 1 and Sec 2 maths costs about S$27.50 to S$52.50 an hour in a group. One-to-one tutors on our rate card cost S$30 to S$85 an hour, depending on whether the tutor is part-time, full-time or ex-MOE.

Is there maths tuition for G2 students in Sec 1?

Yes. Math Lobby and Sirius Mathematics run separate G2 classes, and Habitat Learning Centre and The Bright Room take G2 students. Matrix Math accepts G2 students in classes taught to the G3 syllabus.

Should my child start maths tuition in Sec 1 or wait for Sec 2?

Sec 1 algebra and fractional equations are the base for every Sec 2 topic, so gaps caught in Term 1 or 2 of Sec 1 are cheaper to fix. A child who is coping well can wait and review after the first weighted assessment.

Is there a mid-year exam in Sec 1?

No. Since 2023 no Singapore secondary school sets a mid-year exam, so a Sec 1 maths grade is built from the school's own weighted assessments plus the end-of-year paper, on a calendar each school decides.

What PSLE Maths grade do you need to take G3 Maths in Sec 1?

If most of a student's subjects start at G2, AL5 or better in Standard Maths allows Maths at G3. A student placed at G1 needs AL5 or better for G2 or G3, or AL6 Standard or AL A Foundation for G2.

When is the decision on A-Math made?

Usually near the end of Sec 2, after the end-of-year exam. MOE leaves the criteria to schools, which consider each student's progress, so ask your child's school what result it looks for.

Which centres let my child try a lesson first?

Sirius Mathematics and Zenith offer a trial at no charge. Matrix Math charges S$75 (counted as lesson one if you join within a week), Tim Gan Math S$75, The Science Academy S$80 plus an admin fee, and The Math Lab treats the whole first month as a refundable trial. Miracle Math no longer runs trials through the year.

Can my child do Sec 1 maths tuition online?

Yes. Every Tim Gan Math class can be joined by livestream at the same S$75 a lesson, and Math Lobby runs live classes on Zoom.
