Eleven places in Singapore that teach IB Diploma Chinese, compared on which course they cover (Chinese B SL or HL, Language A, ab initio), published fees turned into a cost per hour, group size and branches, plus how each course is assessed and what changes for the 2027 cohort.
The best IB Chinese tuition depends first on the course your child takes, then on HL or SL, then on where you live.
Chinese B SL or ab initio, fee on the page: Elite Linguistic Academy runs groups of up to 6 in Chinatown from S$420 a month for four 1.5-hour lessons.
Chinese B at HL, or Language A: Language and Literature online: Photon Academy near Fort Canning charges S$480 for four 1.5-hour group lessons.
HL literary extract practice in the north: Ancourage Academy teaches DP1 and DP2 Chinese B in small groups in Bishan and Woodlands.
One-to-one in any course: Mandarin Plus states S$60 to S$75 an hour.
A local IB school student in the east: Yanzi Mandarin teaches IB Chinese at Katong in classes of up to 6.
All 11 providers name IB Chinese on their own pages. Only five give both a fee and the hours it buys, so only those five carry our hourly estimate.

Bishan and Woodlands South
Suits: a Chinese B student, SL or HL, living near Bishan or Woodlands who wants a small group that splits DP1 from DP2.
May not suit: a Language A or ab initio student, as only Chinese B is listed, or a family that wants to see a fee before calling.
The DP1 page works through Paper 1 (one prompt chosen from three), Paper 2 listening and reading, and the Individual Oral across the five prescribed themes.
The DP2 page adds timed writing across text types, Paper 2 practice at speed and oral rehearsal, and notes that the oral is usually recorded between January and March of DP2. Its FAQ tells HL students to know their two literary works well enough to talk about any extract. Worksheets are included with no material fee.
Fees as published: not published for IB. The pricing page says fees vary by level, subject and group or one-to-one, sold in packages of 4, 12 or 24 lessons, with no registration fee. A deposit applies to some package types. The standard trial price is S$18 for a live 60-minute lesson.
Branches: Bishan Street 11, block 152, unit #01-215, a short walk from Bishan MRT by our reckoning. Woodlands Drive 44 at Vista Point, #02-16, closest to Woodlands South MRT in our view. Chinese B also runs online.

Which schools offer which course in Singapore
At St Joseph's Institution, the IB Diploma page lists Chinese A: Language and Literature at SL (by teacher recommendation), Chinese B at SL and HL and Mandarin ab initio at SL, all sat as November papers.
ACS (Independent) lists Chinese B and says a class runs only if enough students choose it. Many international schools sit in May instead, so ask the school which session your child is entered for. That decides when the oral must be recorded and when tuition should peak.

How to choose IB Chinese tuition
1Confirm the course and levelAsk the school whether your child is in Chinese A, Chinese B or ab initio, at SL or HL, and whether they sit in May or November. Rule out any provider that does not name that course.
2Find the weakest componentLook at the last school report. Writing points to Paper 1, slow comprehension to Paper 2, and hesitant speaking to the Individual Oral.
3Check the HL literary worksFor Chinese B HL, ask whether the tutor will practise on extracts from your child's own two works, since the oral is built on them.
4Turn the fee into an hourly costDivide the monthly or package fee by the hours it buys, and add any deposit or registration charge.
5Use the trial to test one paperBring a recent marked Paper 1 or oral recording. A good tutor should name two specific fixes before the lesson ends.
6Ask about the new guidesFor a student starting DP1 in 2027, ask whether the tutor has read the course first examined in 2029.
Common questions
What is the difference between IB Chinese A, Chinese B and ab initio?
Chinese A: Language and Literature is a Group 1 course for strong or native readers that analyses literary and non-literary texts. Chinese B is a Group 2 course for students with some background, and ab initio is a Group 2 course for beginners, offered at SL only.
Is IB Chinese B HL much harder than SL?
The weightings are the same, 25% each for writing, listening, reading and the oral. HL adds two literary works, a longer Paper 1 answer and an oral built on a literary extract instead of a picture.
Can my child take ab initio if they did Chinese at IGCSE?
Usually not. Ab initio is meant for beginners, and one international school's course page says students who studied Chinese to IGCSE level are not suited to it, so the school is likely to place them in Chinese B.
How much does IB Chinese tuition cost in Singapore?
On the fees published by the providers on this list, group lessons work out to about S$60 to S$80 an hour and private lessons to about S$60 to S$180 an hour. Our own IB home tutors charge S$45 to S$130 an hour, depending on tutor type.
When is the IB Chinese Individual Oral done?
It is internally assessed in the second year of the Diploma. Ancourage's DP2 page says it is usually recorded between January and March, but your child's school sets the date, so check before planning tuition.
What changes for students starting the IB in 2027?
New Language B and ab initio guides start teaching in August 2027 and are first examined in May 2029. The IB says the course is still built on five themes and that the assessment model does not change.
Which IB Chinese tuition is best for a local IB school student?
St Joseph's Institution and similar local schools sit Chinese in November, so a centre with local IB students, such as Yanzi Mandarin or Skylace, may match the timetable. Ask whether the group sits in November before enrolling.
Is online IB Chinese tuition as good as face to face?
For Paper 1 and Paper 2 practice it can be, and seven providers here teach online. For the Individual Oral, many students find a live speaking partner easier, so ask how oral practice works on screen.
Can a tutor help with the HL essay in Chinese A?
Yes, if the tutor knows the current guide. Mandarin Plus lists HL essay support, and the essay is 20% of the HL grade, so check the tutor has taught it since the 2021 guide began.
Should we choose Chinese B or switch to ab initio to get a higher grade?
The school decides placement based on your child's background, not the grade you hope for. If Chinese B feels too hard, talk to the school's language coordinator before paying for tuition in a different course.
