Poly EAE 2027: dates, SEC entry criteria, portfolios and offers explained

Written and reviewed by Theon Teo, Founder · editorial policy

The Polytechnic Early Admissions Exercise lets Sec 4 and Sec 5 students win a conditional poly place on aptitude before their exams. Here is how EAE 2027 works for the first SEC cohort, from the June window to the January results.

The Poly EAE (Polytechnic Early Admissions Exercise) lets a student win a polytechnic place on passion and aptitude, months before their exam results. For the 2027 cohort, the first to sit the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC), applications are expected in late June 2027, offers in early September 2027, and the offer is confirmed automatically in mid-January 2028 if the student meets the 2028 polytechnic entry bar.

This guide covers who can apply, the dates, what the polytechnics look for, how conditional offers work under the new SEC scoring, and what to do if things do not go to plan. It also covers the ITE EAE and the Poly EAE for ITE students. Everything here comes from MOE, the joint Poly EAE portal and the polytechnics' own pages, checked on 7 November 2026.

What is the Poly EAE?

MOE calls the Poly EAE an aptitude-based admissions exercise. The joint portal says it lets students receive conditional offers for admission to polytechnics prior to receiving their final grades, so the polytechnics can admit students on aptitude and interest as well as grades. All five polytechnics take part: Nanyang, Ngee Ann, Republic, Singapore and Temasek.

It is not a back door. The offer is conditional, and the student still has to meet an academic bar when results come out. What EAE changes is the order: the course is decided first, on interest and talent, and the grades only need to clear a floor.

How big is it? The polytechnics admit about 20% of their Academic Year intake through Poly EAE. Each course can fill up to 30% of its places through EAE, and some courses where passion matters most, such as Early Childhood, Social Work and Design, can fill up to 50%.

EAE 2027 is the first EAE for the SEC cohort

Students in Sec 4 and Sec 5 in 2027 will sit the SEC, not the O-Level. Our guide to how the SEC replaces the O-Level in 2027 explains the change. For EAE, three things follow.

  1. The exercise still runs before the exams. MOE says DSA-JC, Poly EAE and ITE EAE will take place before the SEC examinations.
  2. The academic bar is new. The joint portal's FAQ for the 2028 intake says the academic criteria for Poly EAE application will be the same as the Post-Secondary Admissions Exercise (PSE) for SEC students. So the old O-Level bar of 26 points does not carry over.
  3. The follow-on exercise is the PSE, not the JAE. If an EAE offer does not work out, the next step is the 2028 PSE. Our PSE 2028 guide covers the whole exercise.

Poly EAE 2027 dates

MOE and the polytechnics have not published the 2027 dates yet (checked 7 November 2026). The dates below are expected windows based on the 2026 exercise, which ran for the AY2027 intake. Dates that MOE has already published for the SEC cohort are marked as published.

Sources for 2026: the joint Poly EAE portal, MOE's 5 May 2026 release and ITE's intake page. For the SEC cohort, the MOE PSE page gives the September 2027 CCA check, the mid-January 2028 results and the 6-day PSE window.

  1. Late May 2027 (expected)ITE EAE applications2026 window: 20 to 26 May
  2. Late June 2027 (expected)Poly EAE opens for SEC students2026 window: 25 June to 1 July, about one week only

  7. Mid-Jan 2028PSE opens for 6 daysOnly for students without a confirmed EAE place

The window is short. In 2026 it was open for 7 days, and the acceptance stage lasted about 4 days. MOE announced the 2026 dates on 5 May 2026, so watch for the 2027 dates from around May 2027.

Who can apply for Poly EAE 2027?

For the 2026 exercise, MOE opened the Poly EAE to Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents sitting the O-Level that year, international students in government, government-aided and independent schools sitting the O-Level that year, and final-year ITE students. Students who are in a polytechnic now, or were before, cannot apply. Working adults with at least two years of relevant work experience have their own EAE route.

For 2027, MOE's pages still describe the O-Level rules. We expect the same groups to be eligible, with the SEC in place of the O-Level, so a Sec 4 or Sec 5 student sitting the SEC in 2027 should be able to apply. Check MOE's Poly EAE page when it is updated for 2027.

What grades does an SEC student need?

The bar to confirm an EAE offer is the same as the 2028 PSE bar for polytechnics. MOE's polytechnic diploma page for PSE sets two criteria:

  • Aggregate. A net ELR2B2 of 22 or better. For the Diploma in Nursing, the ELR2B2-C net aggregate must be 24 or better.
  • Course MER. The minimum entry requirements of the course, usually set grades in English and the relevant subjects. MOE says the 2028 MERs will be on CourseFinder from mid-2027.

ELR2B2 counts five subjects, then takes away CCA bonus points:

PartSubjectLevel used
ELEnglish LanguageG3 grade
R1Best G3 subject relevant to the courseG3 grade
R2Next best G3 subject relevant to the courseG3 grade
B1Best other G3 subjectG3 grade
B2Second best other subjectG2 or G3, counted on the G2 scale

When B2 is a G3 subject, MOE maps its grade down to the G2 scale:

G3 gradeCounts as (G2 scale)
A1 to B31
B4 to C62
D73
E84

A G3 grade 9, or a G2 grade 5 or 6, cannot be used for the ELR2B2 aggregate. So a student needs at least four subjects at G3 (English, two relevant subjects and one more) for the polytechnic route. That is worth knowing when your child chooses subject levels for upper secondary. Our SEC grading system guide explains how G1, G2 and G3 grades work.

CCA bonus points come off the total: 2 points for Excellent and 1 point for Good. Our LEAPS 2.0 guide shows how the CCA grade is earned.

Do not compare 22 with the old 26 one for one. Under the O-Level system every subject counted on the 1 to 9 scale, whereas now B2 counts on the shorter G2 scale.

Net ELR2B224

A net 24 misses the 22 bar, so the offer is revoked and Ben applies in the PSE instead. The same 24 would have cleared the Nursing bar, which is why the Nursing figure is set separately.

You can test grade mixes with our L1R5 and ELR2B2 calculator. It uses O-Level style grades, so apply the G2 mapping above for B2 by hand.

How many choices, and how offers are made

Students apply for up to three diploma courses, and the three can be at different polytechnics. The rules that catch families out:

The write-up, portfolio and interview

The write-up

Each course choice needs a short statement. Singapore Polytechnic says applicants submit a write-up of up to 600 characters on their passion and aptitude for the course. Republic Polytechnic adds an optional talents and achievements write-up of up to 1,000 characters, which it highly recommends.

600 characters is about 100 words, so every line must carry evidence. A good pattern:

  1. Name the sparkOne line on when the interest started, tied to something real
  2. Show what you didA project, CCA role, competition, work attachment or Applied Learning Module
  3. Show what you learnedOne concrete skill or insight from it
  4. Link it to the courseName a module or part of the diploma that builds on it

Write a separate statement for each course. A generic one pasted three times reads as weak interest.

The portfolio and supporting documents

Polytechnics may consider participation in relevant CCAs and Applied Learning Modules, as well as work attachments and sustained involvement in projects, and talent in sports, arts, leadership, entrepreneurship and community service. SP encourages applicants to bring a portfolio, testimonials on leadership, competition results and relevant programme participation.

Start collecting from Sec 3: certificates, CCA records, photos of projects, and short notes on what each item shows. A thin portfolio built in the last week of June is easy to spot.

Interviews and aptitude tests

Only shortlisted applicants are invited to interview, and some courses add aptitude tests. Being called for interview does not guarantee you a place. If your child is unwell on the day, inform the polytechnic immediately so that alternative arrangements can be made.

Course-specific aptitude criteria: examples from Ngee Ann Polytechnic

Each polytechnic sets its own criteria for each course. Ngee Ann Polytechnic publishes the most detail on its EAE assessment criteria page. These are its 2026 criteria, summarised.

DiplomaHow NP assessesWhat it looks for
DesignInterview, portfolio, design aptitude activity, online questionnaireDrawings, sketches, digital work or visual diaries. Creative concepts and new ideas. What you have done to pursue design
AccountancyHackathon with presentation and Q&A, portfolio, aptitude testAnalytical thinking and teamwork. Business awareness, comprehension and numeracy. Accounting-related activities
Mechatronics & RoboticsInterview, portfolio, aptitude test, online questionnaireBasic engineering and science. Logical and spatial reasoning. Advanced Elective Modules or competitions such as WorldSkills
NursingInterview, portfolio, aptitude test, online questionnairePassion for nursing, empathy and communication. Healthcare-related projects, community service. Situational judgement
Cybersecurity & Digital ForensicsInterview, portfolio, aptitude test, online questionnairePersonal security projects, CTFs or hackathons, with your thinking explained. Verbal, numerical and logical reasoning

Always check the course page at the polytechnic you are applying to, since criteria differ even for diplomas with similar names.

After SEC results: confirmed or revoked

Nothing more needs to be done on results day. MOE says the offer is automatically confirmed upon the release of your O-Level results if you meet the requirements, and the same automatic step is expected for SEC results in mid-January 2028.

If the offer is revoked, the student will be eligible to participate in the Joint Admissions Exercise (JAE) and other polytechnic admissions exercises. For the SEC cohort, that means the PSE in January 2028. Our poly cut-off points guide shows the latest net ELR2B2 ranges by course, which helps with a backup list.

Can an EAE student still join the PSE?

Not once the offer is confirmed. MOE's PSE eligibility page lists, among those not eligible, students who have a confirmed place and are successfully admitted to an institution through a direct or early admission exercise, naming DSA-JC and Poly EAE.

A student can still reach the PSE in three ways:

  1. No offer, or offer rejectedApply in the PSE after SEC results
  2. Offer accepted, then withdrawn by the deadline (expected mid-October 2027)Free to apply in the PSE
  3. Offer accepted, but results miss the barOffer revoked, apply in the PSE

The withdrawal deadline is the real decision point. In 2026, students who do not withdraw by the deadline will be deemed to have confirmed their acceptance. After that, a student with good results cannot switch to a JC or a different course.

The portal itself says that students still finding their strengths may consider applying through the JAE after receiving your results instead. Families weighing JC against poly will find our guide to choosing between JC and poly useful.

Poly EAE and DSA-JC together

A student can apply for both. The portal says you may participate in both Poly EAE and the DSA-JC Exercise concurrently, but you should accept only one offer. Students who accept both are disqualified from both, unless they reject one before the acceptance stage closes (11 September in 2026). Our DSA guide explains the DSA side.

Poly EAE for ITE students

Final-year Nitec and Higher Nitec students have their own Poly EAE window, which in 2026 was 11 to 17 June. The 2027 window is expected in mid-June 2027. The bar to confirm the offer is a final net GPA of 2.5 or better for Higher Nitec, or 3.5 or better for Nitec, with 3.0 for Nitec in Nursing holders applying to Nursing. SP notes the Higher Nitec bar rose from net GPA 2.0 to 2.5 for AY2027.

Two points specific to ITE students:

ITE EAE

The ITE EAE works the same way for ITE courses. MOE describes it as an aptitude-based admissions exercise with conditional offers before N-Level or O-Level results. In 2026, applications ran from 20 to 26 May, interviews from 15 June to 22 July, offers on 17 August and withdrawals from 24 to 28 August. The 2027 round is expected in late May 2027, before the Poly EAE.

Applicants may need to submit portfolios, and undergo interviews and aptitude tests, and must still meet the course MER on results day. In 2026, students who accepted an ITE EAE place were not eligible to take part in the Joint Intake Exercise. Our ITE guide covers Nitec and Higher Nitec courses.

A plan for the 2027 cohort

  1. Sec 3 to early Sec 4Pick two or three fields, go to poly open houses, start a portfolio folder
  2. By May 2027Shortlist courses, read each course's EAE criteria, check the 2028 MERs when they appear
  3. Late June 2027 (expected)Apply within the window: up to 3 courses, ranked, one write-up per course
  4. July to September 2027 (expected)Prepare for interviews and aptitude tests, bring the portfolio
  5. Early September 2027 (expected)Accept or reject within the acceptance stage
  6. By mid-October 2027 (expected)Decide finally: keep the offer or withdraw to keep the PSE open
  7. Mid-January 2028Check results. Confirmed, or revoked and into the PSE

Keep revising through the EAE months. The offer only holds if the SEC grades clear the bar, so the September and October papers still matter.

Get help

EAE offers only hold if the SEC grades clear the bar, so the months after the interviews still count. The Singapore Syllabus can arrange SEC tuition in English, Maths and the sciences for students working towards a confirmed polytechnic place.

Common questions

What is the Poly EAE?

It is an aptitude-based exercise in which students apply to polytechnic courses in the middle of their exam year and can get a conditional offer before their results. The offer is confirmed if their results meet the academic bar.

When is Poly EAE 2027?

The dates are not published yet. Based on 2026, the SEC student window is expected in late June to early July 2027, with offers in early September 2027. In 2026 the window ran from 25 June to 1 July.

What is the minimum score for Poly EAE for the SEC cohort?

The academic criteria are the same as the 2028 PSE: a net ELR2B2 of 22 or better (24 on ELR2B2-C for Nursing), plus the course's minimum entry requirements. The old O-Level bar of 26 does not apply to SEC students.

How many courses can I apply for in the EAE?

Up to three, ranked in order. You can receive only one offer, for the highest-ranked course that finds you suitable.

If I reject my EAE offer, will I get my second choice?

No. You receive only one offer, so rejecting it leaves you with no EAE place. Rank your favourite course first.

Can my child do Poly EAE and DSA-JC at the same time?

Yes. But they should accept only one offer, because accepting both leads to disqualification from both unless one is rejected before the acceptance stage ends.

Can an EAE student still apply in the PSE?

Only if they have no confirmed place. Students who withdraw by the deadline, have no offer, or have their offer revoked on results day can apply in the PSE.

What happens if my results miss the EAE bar?

The conditional offer is revoked automatically on results day. You can then apply through the PSE in the same 6-day window as everyone else.

Can I change course after my EAE offer is confirmed?

No. You cannot switch courses within or across polytechnics, and you cannot join other admission exercises.

Do I need a portfolio for Poly EAE?

It depends on the polytechnic and course. At Ngee Ann Polytechnic, the Design, Accountancy, Mechatronics, Nursing and Cybersecurity diplomas all assess a portfolio, and polytechnics generally welcome certificates, CCA records and project evidence.

Do CCA bonus points count for EAE?

Yes, for the aggregate used to confirm the offer. A Good CCA grade takes 1 point off the net ELR2B2 and Excellent takes 2.

Can ITE students apply for Poly EAE?

Final-year Nitec and Higher Nitec students can. They need a final net GPA of 2.5 for Higher Nitec or 3.5 for Nitec to confirm the offer.
