The best PSLE Chinese tuition centre depends on where your child loses marks. For the lowest published fee, HAO Chinese Tuition starts at about S$26 an hour for a 2-hour primary class. For the smallest class, Yi Dian Tong teaches live online groups of up to 4, and Ruixing Chinese caps its Bugis classes at 6. For a child who freezes at the oral or the composition, Confucius Mandarin runs a separate weekly class with one essay and one oral conversation every week. For a branch near home in the north, Tien Hsia has Woodlands and Sembawang and Mind Stretcher has four northern centres. For a former MOE textbook writer who teaches his own classes, Mr Mok's Chinese Tuition is at Bukit Timah Shopping Centre. In the east, EduGrove has four centres and a 2 hour 30 minute P5 and P6 lesson that rotates through every paper.
Best PSLE Chinese Tuition Centres in Singapore (2027): 10 Compared
Written and reviewed by Theon Teo, Founder · editorial policy
We compared 10 primary Chinese tuition centres with a PSLE focus, using only what each centre publishes, read on 8 November 2026. Fees per hour, class sizes, branches by region, trial terms, and the marks and weightings of all four PSLE Chinese papers from SEAB.
We started from the centres that rank on Google Singapore for "PSLE Chinese tuition centre", "primary Chinese tuition Singapore", "P6 Chinese tuition" and "Chinese enrichment class primary", and the centres named most often on the top comparison pages for those searches. From those we kept centres that met four tests.
- Teaches primary Chinese for the PSLE. Each centre runs named P5 and P6 classes, or a P2 to P6 course, built around the PSLE papers, not only preschool or conversational Mandarin.
- Publishes its programme. Levels, lesson content and branches are on its own site, so you can check them.
- Active for 2027. Each one lists current branches, 2027 fees or 2027 intake details.
- A spread of needs. We wanted small groups and large networks, full-paper classes and component classes, every region, online and a range of prices.
We kept the list different from our Chinese tuition centres comparison and our Higher Chinese centres comparison. Five of the 10 centres here appear in neither. HAO, Tien Hsia and Hua Language Centre also appear in the Chinese comparison, and HAO, Mind Stretcher and Ruixing in the Higher Chinese one, because each runs a full primary programme.
Where a centre does not publish a fact, the table says "not published". We did not include Google ratings. We could not read a dated numeric rating from a source we opened for every centre, and a partial set would not compare fairly. The order below is alphabetical, not a ranking.
The 10 centres compared
Our per-hour figure is an estimate. We divide the published fee by the published hours it covers. Where a centre states GST, we use the fee with GST. Where it does not say, we use the fee as published. Where a fee is not published, we do not estimate.

The 10 centres in detail
Confucius Mandarin
What is distinctive. A Chinese-only school from preschool to JC with 18 outlets listed on its locations page. For P1 to P6 it runs three weekly 2-hour classes: Chinese Language, Higher Chinese Language, and Chinese Creative Writing and Oral. The writing and oral class sets 1 essay and 1 oral conversation every week, while the language classes include an essay and oral practice once a month. It aims for 400 to 500 new words a year in the Chinese class and 500 to 600 in the Higher Chinese class. A P6 crash course for PSLE Chinese and Higher Chinese runs in the March, June, September and December holidays. It is an affiliate of Stalford Education Group, and its teachers include native speakers, former government school teachers and published authors.
Suits: a child whose oral and composition lag behind the rest, and families who want an outlet close to home. Less suited to: parents who need class size and fees before they visit, since neither is published.

EduGrove
What is distinctive. A Mandarin enrichment centre from playgroup to secondary. P1 to P4 classes run 2 hours and P5 and P6 classes run 2 hours 30 minutes, once a week, with a maximum of 12 children. Each week focuses on a different part of the exam in turn: oral, composition, the main paper and comprehension, using word games, role play and drama alongside written work. P5 and P6 have separate HC versions. It says its teachers are university graduates who go through six months of training, and that the team includes former MOE PSLE markers and curriculum writers. The centre states that 61% of its primary students scored AL4 and above and that 99% of its students improve by at least one grade.
Suits: a child who learns through games and speaking and can manage a long weekly lesson, and families in the east and north-east. Less suited to: parents who want a small class, since its cap of 12 is the largest published here, or who need fees before they visit.
Fees as published: not published. Trial classes are offered through a form, with length and cost not published.

At primary level it runs Higher Chinese only from P1 to P4, then both Standard and Higher Chinese at P5 and P6. Each term is 12 lessons of 2 hours, with an average of 6 to 8 children, covering comprehension, composition, oral and listening. Its FAQ says no grade or improvement timeframe is guaranteed.
Suits: families who want a published fee and a small class, and P5 and P6 children in either stream. Less suited to: a P1 to P4 child in the standard Chinese stream, since its lower primary classes are Higher Chinese only.
Fees as published: from S$627.84 per 12-lesson term including 9% GST (S$576 before GST). The page calls these starting prices and asks parents to confirm the fee for their child's class. Registration, deposit and material fees are not published. A trial at no charge is offered for primary.
Branches: 6 centres at Balestier (501 Balestier Road, Wai Wing Centre, nearest MRT Novena or Toa Payoh by our reading), Jurong East, Hong Kah North CC, Bukit Batok, Bedok Reservoir and Kovan. Only the Balestier address is on the programme page.

Hua Language Centre
What is distinctive. A Chinese-only centre established in 1992, with 4 branches and classes of usually 6 to 8. The main primary programme is 2 hours a week. From P4 to P6 it adds creative writing, listening comprehension, passage narration and PSLE exam strategies. Oral mock exams are recorded and the recordings are shared with parents for practice at home, and each exam is followed by a post-mortem on mistakes. A separate 2-hour oral, comprehension and composition programme is for children who already have the basic vocabulary, and an Elite Chinese Programme is also listed.
Suits: parents who want to hear their child's oral and help at home, and families near one of its four malls. Less suited to: families who need a fee before they enquire, since fees are not published.
Fees as published: not published. You can arrange a trial class focused on creative writing or oral, and the centre offers an assessment of your child's level at no charge.

Mind Stretcher
What is distinctive. A large multi-subject centre with 29 physical centres and an online option. Its upper primary Chinese lessons follow a three-step pattern: a worked example, independent practice and a quick quiz, with a 3-step method for open-ended comprehension. Lessons are 2 hours, once a week per subject.
Suits: families who want a branch near home and a published fee, and children who like a fixed answering method. Less suited to: parents who want a published class size, or a centre that teaches only Chinese.

Mr Mok's Chinese Tuition
What is distinctive. A small learning centre run by Mok Wei Wu, who graduated with first class honours in Chinese Studies from NUS on an MOE Teaching Scholarship. He spent 10 years in government schools and at MOE headquarters and was an editor and writer for MOE textbooks. Group classes run 4 times a month: 1 hour 30 minutes for P1 to P4 and 2 hours for P5 to Sec 4, mixing exam skills, games and practical tips. A holiday programme is also listed.
Suits: families in the west who want the person who designed the lessons to teach them. Less suited to: families outside Bukit Timah, since there is one branch, or parents who want 2027 details now, since the page says they are coming.
Fees as published: not published. Class size, registration fees and trial terms are not published.

From P1 to P4, Higher Chinese children stay in the main class with extra material, and from P5 they move to a dedicated Higher Chinese class. A primary composition course is listed separately, and 1-to-1 lessons are available at every level.
Suits: families who want a small in-person class and a clear monthly fee. Less suited to: families far from the city centre, since there is one physical branch.
Fees as published: a month of 4 lessons, materials included, is S$268 for P1 and P2, S$288 for P3 and P4 and S$318 for P5 and P6, GST not stated. 1-to-1 lessons are S$60 an hour. Its P6 options are Enrichment (2 hours), Enrichment Plus+ (3 hours, with weekly oral, composition and comprehension) and a 2-hour Writing, Oral and Comprehension class with a composition almost every week. Its composition targets rise from 200 characters at P3 to 500 characters at P6, well above the PSLE minimum of 100.
Suits: families who want a branch in their own region and a choice of lesson length at P6. Less suited to: parents who need class size or fees in writing before they visit, since neither is published.

Regular classes are capped at 4 children, and 50-minute PSLE intensives in oral, composition or comprehension are capped at 2. Its curriculum was designed by former MOE teachers, and teachers are trained in-house under former MOE educators. Its P2 to P6 enrichment course is split by paper: 5 creative composition lessons, 5 comprehension lessons and 2 oral lessons, following the MOE syllabus, with a maximum of 7 to 8 children. It also runs a P3 to P5 creative writing course of 2 hours a lesson, plus Chinese painting and calligraphy. The centre states that almost 90% of its students achieve AL1 to AL3 in PSLE Chinese.
Suits: a child who needs structured composition and comprehension work in a small group. Less suited to: parents who want weekly oral, since the course has 2 oral lessons to 10 written ones, or who need fees first.
Fees as published: not published. The page asks parents to call for the schedule. Trial terms are not published.

What PSLE Chinese actually tests
SEAB's PSLE Chinese Language syllabus (0005) has four papers and 200 marks. These are the formats examined in 2026. SEAB had not posted the 2027 formats when we checked.
| Paper | What it is | Time | Marks | Weighting |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Composition | One of two: a given title or a picture series, at least 100 characters, SEAB-approved dictionary allowed | 50 min | 40 | 20% |
| 2 Language use and comprehension | 40 questions, 29 multiple choice and 11 open-ended | 1 h 40 min | 90 | 45% |
| 3 Oral | Reading a passage aloud (20 marks), then a conversation about a short video (30 marks) | About 10 min | 50 | 25% |
| 4 Listening | 10 multiple-choice items | About 30 min | 20 | 10% |
| Paper 2 section | Format | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Language use: pinyin, characters, words and sentences | Multiple choice | 15 | 30 |
| Passage cloze | Multiple choice | 5 | 10 |
| Comprehension 1 | Multiple choice | 5 | 10 |
| Complete the dialogue | Multiple choice | 4 | 8 |
| Comprehension 2, on a functional text and a passage, with written interaction | Open-ended | 11 | 32 |
| Total | 40 | 90 |
- marks in PSLE Chinese
- 200
- marks in oral and listening together, 35% of the result
- 70
- marks in open-ended comprehension, the largest single section
- 32
- marks out of 200 for AL1, by our arithmetic
- 180
MOE grades PSLE Chinese by percentage: AL1 is 90% and above, AL2 is 85 to 89%, AL3 is 80 to 84% and AL4 is 75 to 79%. On 200 marks that means 180 for AL1, 170 for AL2 and 160 for AL3. Each oral mark is worth half a percentage point, so 10 extra marks in the oral alone moves a child 5 points, enough to cross a whole AL band.
Three things follow for choosing a centre. Oral and listening carry 70 marks between them, so ask how often a centre runs a real oral with a video prompt, not only a reading passage. Open-ended comprehension is 32 marks, more than the next three Paper 2 sections put together, so a class that only drills multiple choice misses the biggest section. And the composition needs only 100 characters, so a centre that trains much longer pieces is building depth, not meeting a rule.
Higher Chinese (0015) is a separate paper with no oral, graded Distinction, Merit or Pass outside the PSLE Score. Foundation Chinese (0025) has no composition and puts 55% on the oral. Our Higher Chinese guide for PSLE and Sec 1 explains the choice.

Centre, home tutor or online?
| Point | Chinese centre class | One-to-one tutor, at home or online |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per hour | About S$26 to S$40 where fee and length are published, shared with the class | S$25 to S$70 at P1 to P4 and S$30 to S$80 at P5 and P6, from our rate card, by tutor type |
| Who sets the pace | The class programme and its timetable | The tutor, around your child's weakest paper |
| Oral practice | Varies from weekly to a few lessons a term, so ask | Can be part of every lesson, with the child speaking most of the hour |
| Composition feedback | Varies, so ask to see marked scripts | Each script can be gone through line by line |
| Best for | A child who is keeping up and gains from hearing others speak | A child who will not speak Mandarin in a group, or one weak paper such as oral or open-ended comprehension |
A centre hour is cheaper because it is shared. A one-to-one hour costs a little more at the lower end but spends the whole hour on one child's errors, which matters most for the oral. Our pricing page has the full TSS rate card.

How to choose
- Find the paper that costs marksLook at your child's last marked Chinese paper. Oral, composition, open-ended comprehension and listening each need a different kind of class.
- Match the class to itA weekly oral and writing class for a quiet child, a full-paper class for Paper 2, a small group for a child who needs speaking time.
- Check the streamMake sure the class matches the school stream. Standard and Higher Chinese papers are different, and some centres teach only Higher Chinese at lower primary.
- Check the real costAdd registration, deposit and materials to the lesson fee, and work out the cost per hour with GST.
- Book a trial with a marked paperBring a recent script and ask the teacher to work on your child's real errors.
At the trial, check these five things:
| Check | A good answer looks like |
|---|---|
| Oral | Reading aloud with feedback on tones, plus a conversation on a video or picture, through the year |
| Composition | A marked script with comments, and a rewrite the following week |
| Open-ended comprehension | Practice on functional texts and the written interaction question, not only multiple choice |
| Who talks | Your child speaks Mandarin for a real share of the lesson |
| Progress record | A dated record of marks by paper, shared with you |
One warning sign is a stack of memorised model essays. The composition topic or picture is unseen, so a learned essay rarely fits. A centre teaching 10 or more students at a time should appear in MOE's private schools search, though registration is not a mark of quality.
If one-to-one sounds right, our Chinese tuition page explains how we match tutors by level, and the PSLE Chinese subject page sets out what we cover.
Common questions
Which is the best PSLE Chinese tuition centre in Singapore?
It depends on the need. From our comparison, HAO has the lowest published fee, Yi Dian Tong and Ruixing have the smallest published classes, Confucius Mandarin runs a weekly essay and oral class, and Tien Hsia and Mind Stretcher have the most branches.
How much does P6 Chinese tuition cost at a centre in 2027?
Where both fee and lesson length are published, primary Chinese classes cost about S$26 to S$40 an hour, from fees we read on 8 November 2026. Six of the 10 centres do not publish a primary fee, so ask for it in writing with any registration fee and deposit.
What class size is best for PSLE Chinese?
Smaller groups give each child more speaking time, which matters for the 50-mark oral. Of the centres that publish a size, Yi Dian Tong caps at 4, Ruixing at 6, HAO and Hua average 6 to 8, Zhou's caps at 7 to 8 and EduGrove at 12.
How is PSLE Chinese marked?
Out of 200 marks: composition 40 (20%), language use and comprehension 90 (45%), oral 50 (25%) and listening 20 (10%). The result is an AL from 1 to 8, with AL1 at 90% and above.
How much is the PSLE Chinese oral worth?
50 marks, or 25% of the result: 20 for reading a passage aloud and 30 for the conversation about a video. SEAB has said the conversation is marked on how well a child communicates, not on knowledge of the topic.
How many characters must a PSLE Chinese composition be?
At least 100 characters, on a given title or a picture series, in 50 minutes, and an SEAB-approved dictionary is allowed. Many centres train longer pieces, but 100 is the minimum.
When should my child start Chinese tuition?
When marked school work shows a steady pattern of lost marks in one paper, rather than at a fixed level. Most centres here run classes from P1, and PSLE-focused work usually starts in P5.
Do these centres offer trial lessons?
HAO, Tien Hsia, Ruixing (group) and Yi Dian Tong offer a trial at no charge, and Hua Language Centre offers an assessment at no charge. Mind Stretcher has a one-time paid trial. Others take bookings but do not publish terms.
Is a centre or a home tutor better for primary Chinese?
Neither in general. A small class suits a child who is keeping up and gains from hearing others speak, while one-to-one suits a child who will not speak Mandarin in a group or has one weak paper.
How much is one-to-one primary Chinese tuition through TSS?
From our rate card, S$25 to S$70 an hour at P1 to P4 and S$30 to S$80 at P5 and P6, by tutor type. The same rates apply at home or online.
