The PSLE Chinese oral is worth 50 of 200 marks: 20 for reading aloud and 30 for a conversation based on a short video. Here is the SEAB format, what examiners reward, original model answers at two levels, a phrase bank and a plan to the expected August 2027 oral.
The PSLE Chinese oral (口试) carries 50 marks, a quarter of the Standard Chinese result. Your child reads a short passage aloud for 20 marks, then talks with an examiner about a short video for 30 marks, after 10 minutes of silent preparation. This guide sets out the official format from SEAB, the Foundation and Higher Chinese differences, what examiners reward, original model answers at two levels, a phrase bank and a practice plan to the oral, which is expected in August 2027.
Everything about format and dates below comes from SEAB and MOE. The passage, the video prompt, the model answers and the phrases are our own, written for this page.
The PSLE Chinese oral format at a glance
SEAB's PSLE Chinese Language syllabus (subject code 0005) puts the oral in Paper 3, together with listening comprehension. The format has applied since the 2017 exam, the first year the Chinese oral moved to SEAB's e-Oral system.

How the e-Oral works on the day
The oral is an e-Oral: the passage and the video are shown on a screen rather than on paper. The steps from SEAB's syllabus are:
1Preparation, 10 minutesRead the passage silently and watch the video. Within the 10 minutes, your child can reread the passage and replay the video as many times as they like
2Reading aloudYour child reads the passage aloud to the examiner
3Video conversationThe examiner asks questions linked to the video and talks with your child about it
4FinishThe whole oral takes about 10 minutes
SEAB has an official interactive e-Oral guide with a PSLE section. Watch it with your child once in Primary 5 or early Primary 6 so the screen and the routine feel familiar. Your child's school will also brief Primary 6 pupils on the room arrangements before the exam.
How the oral marks move the AL
Standard Chinese is marked out of 200 and the percentage decides the Achievement Level (AL). Since the oral is 50 of those 200 marks, every oral mark is worth half a percentage point of the subject.

Worked example. Wei Ling scores 158 out of 200 across all four parts of Chinese. That is 79%, which is AL4. If her video conversation had scored 4 marks more, she would have 162, which is 81% and AL3. Four conversation marks, out of 30, would have lowered her PSLE Score by one point.
The ALs above are MOE's bands. The marks column is our arithmetic. How the four ALs add up to the PSLE Score is in our AL scores guide.

Foundation Chinese (0025). The oral matters even more here, at 55% of the subject, and the conversation alone is 40%. The other papers are a 40-minute language use and comprehension paper (15%) and listening (30%). Foundation grades map to ALs for posting: grade A (75 and above) counts as AL6, grade B as AL7 and grade C as AL8. Because each Foundation oral mark is worth a whole percentage point, steady conversation practice is the most direct route to a grade A.
Higher Chinese (0015). There is no oral. Higher Chinese has only two written papers, writing (40%) and language use and comprehension (60%), and your child sits the Standard Chinese oral as part of Standard Chinese. Higher Chinese is graded Distinction, Merit or Pass and is not part of the PSLE Score. MOE gives a SAP school posting advantage to students with a Distinction, Merit or Pass in Higher Chinese and a PSLE Score of 14 or better, among students with the same score. Our Higher Chinese guide covers this and the Secondary 1 rules.
What examiners reward
SEAB does not publish band descriptors for the PSLE Chinese oral, and the syllabus lists only the abilities being tested: reading a passage aloud (篇章朗读) and spoken interaction (口语互动). After the 2026 oral, SEAB's Chief Executive set out more detail in a reply to letters in the press on 21 August 2026. In plain English, SEAB said:
The oral tests communication: expressing ideas, holding a conversation, and using suitable vocabulary, sentence structures and pronunciation.
It does not test specialist knowledge, and children do not need prepared or technical vocabulary.
The video sets the scene so children can make observations and share views. They do not have to narrate what happens in order, or name and describe objects. SEAB said no child would lose marks for not knowing the word for a crowbar shown in the Day 1 video.
The questions are pitched for Primary 6 pupils, who can answer in familiar language from a 12-year-old's point of view.
If a child needs help, the examiner gives more prompts, and the child is not penalised for needing them.
Put together, this is what we coach for:
For reading aloud, aim for
For the conversation, aim for
Correct sounds and tones, including the tone changes of 一 and 不
A clear view in the first sentence
The right reading of characters with two pronunciations
A reason, then a specific example from your own life
Natural pauses at commas and full stops, not in the middle of words
Answering the question actually asked, not a memorised speech
A steady pace, with voice rising or falling to suit the mood
Simple, correct sentences over showy idioms
Keeping going after a slip
Talking with the examiner, picking up follow-up questions
Reading aloud: a practice passage with notes
This is an original passage, about the length and level of a Primary 6 reading.
yí wèi (before a fourth tone), yì páng (before a second tone)
Third-tone pairs
老奶奶, 只好
the first of two third tones rises: láo, zhí
Neutral tone
弟弟, 奶奶, 孩子
the second syllable is short and light
Pause
吃完饭后,/ 正准备离开,
pause at the comma, not after 吃
Feeling
老奶奶笑着说
a warmer, slightly slower voice for her words
How to practise. Read each new passage three times. First read slowly and circle any character your child is unsure of, then check it in a dictionary. Then read for the pauses, marking them with a slash in pencil. Then record one read on a phone and play it back. Children hear their own rushing and flat tone far more clearly than when a parent points it out.
The video conversation: an original prompt
SEAB does not publish the questions, so we practise three kinds of question that together cover what SEAB says the conversation is for: an observation from the video, an experience of the child's own, and a view on a wider question. Here is a prompt we wrote, on the same theme as the passage above.
The three questions:
你觉得视频中的女孩做得怎么样?为什么? (What do you think of what the girl did? Why?)
说一说你帮助别人或者得到别人帮助的一次经历。 (Tell me about a time you helped someone, or someone helped you.)
你认为怎样才能让更多人自觉归还餐具? (What can be done so that more people return their trays on their own?)
Question 1: a high-band and a mid-band answer
The labels "high-band" and "mid-band" are our teaching judgement. SEAB does not publish bands for this paper.
Mid-band answer
我觉得女孩做得很好。她把托盘拿去还,还帮老奶奶擦桌子。她很有礼貌。我们应该学习她。
What holds it back:
It is correct, but it mostly retells the video, which SEAB says is not required.
"很好" and "很有礼貌" are general. There is no reason beyond the retelling and no link to the child's own life.
Four short sentences give the examiner little to follow up.
Notes: the story has a when (去年), a problem (跟不上节奏), what the helper did, a result (两个月后) and what the child learnt. It ends by linking back to the child's own behaviour now. Six or seven sentences is about right. Longer stories crowd out the examiner's follow-up questions.
Notes: practical ideas from three people (parents, schools, the hawker centre), each one feasible for a child to suggest. The 不过 sentence adds a personal reflection, which turns a list into a view. If your child cannot think of three ideas, two well-explained ones are better than three thin ones.
A simple shape for any answer
Teach one shape and use it for every question, so your child is never stuck for where to start.
1观点: give your view我觉得 / 我认为 / 在我看来, then your answer in one sentence
2原因: give a reason因为 / 首先, 其次 / 这是因为
3例子: give an exampleFrom your own life, with when, where and what happened
4总结: bring it back所以 / 总的来说 / 这件事让我明白
If the examiner asks a follow-up question, answer it first in one sentence, then add one reason. Follow-ups are a normal part of the conversation and SEAB says needing an extra prompt carries no penalty.

Topics: what SEAB confirmed for 2026
SEAB does not publish oral topics, but its 21 August 2026 reply confirmed the two 2026 themes: safety awareness on Day 1 and honesty on Day 2. It said both were drawn from what pupils learn in school, including Primary 3 textbook chapters, and that the two sessions were designed to be comparable in demand.
Both themes are about everyday values seen from a child's life: keeping safe at home and in the neighbourhood, and owning up to a mistake. Rather than guessing next year's topic, prepare your child to talk about their own experiences of family, school, friends, the neighbourhood, health and helping others. A child with real stories in these areas can answer almost any video.

A 10-minute preparation routine
Children waste the preparation time by reading the passage once and then waiting. This split uses all of it.
Minutes 0 to 2Watch the video onceJust watch. Who is in it, where is it, what is the problem
Minutes 2 to 5Read the passage twiceWhisper it under your breath. Find any character you are unsure of and decide how to read it
Minutes 5 to 7Watch the video againAsk yourself what you think about what happened, and which of your own experiences it reminds you of
Minutes 7 to 9Read the passage once moreFocus on pauses and on the sentences with feeling
Minutes 9 to 10SettlePick one example from your own life to use, and breathe

What to do
Your child misreads a character
Read on. One slip costs far less than stopping, apologising and restarting the sentence
Your child does not understand a question
Ask politely for it to be repeated. SEAB says children are not penalised for needing an extra prompt
The topic feels unfamiliar
SEAB says no specialist knowledge is needed. Answer as a 12-year-old, from your own life
Your child does not know the word for something in the video
Describe it in simple words or leave it out. SEAB says children need not name objects
Your child goes blank
Use the shape: 我觉得, a reason, one example. A short, clear answer beats silence
Your child is ill on the oral day
Tell the school at once and keep the medical certificate. The school handles any application to SEAB
Your child has a condition that affects speech
Talk to the school early. Exemption from the oral is an access arrangement, applied through the school by mid-February of the exam year

Help at home when you don't speak Chinese
Many families speak mainly English at home. You do not need to correct your child's Chinese to help.
Be the examiner. Read out a question from the table above, even with imperfect pronunciation, and time a one-minute answer.
Listen for the shape. Did your child give a view, a reason and an example? You can hear that without knowing every word.
Record and replay. Your child marks their own recording for pauses, hesitation and English words.
Ask why. After any answer, ask 为什么呢? (why?). It is the single best drill for longer, richer answers.
Five minutes of Chinese at dinner. Ask about one thing that happened at school today, in Chinese. Small, daily speaking beats one long weekend session.
If your child also struggles with writing, the planning skills overlap. Our PSLE Chinese composition guide covers Paper 1.

Common questions
How many marks is the PSLE Chinese oral?
50 marks out of 200, which is 25% of PSLE Standard Chinese. Reading aloud is 20 marks and the video conversation is 30.
How long is the PSLE Chinese oral?
About 10 minutes, after 10 minutes of silent preparation. In the preparation time your child can reread the passage and replay the video as often as they like.
What is the PSLE Chinese oral video conversation?
It is a conversation with the examiner based on a short video your child watched during preparation. SEAB says the video gives context for sharing observations and views, and children do not need to narrate it or name objects in it.
When is the PSLE Chinese oral in 2027?
SEAB had not published the date by 7 November 2026. It is expected in August 2027. In 2026 it was on Wednesday 12 and Thursday 13 August.
Does Higher Chinese have an oral?
No. Higher Chinese has only two written papers. Your child's oral is part of Standard Chinese.
How is the Foundation Chinese oral different?
It is worth 55% of Foundation Chinese, with 15 marks for reading aloud and 40 for conversation. The preparation time and format are the same as Standard Chinese.
Is my child penalised if the examiner has to help?
No. SEAB says examiners give more prompts when a child needs help, and children are not penalised for needing them.
What were the 2026 PSLE Chinese oral topics?
SEAB confirmed the themes as safety awareness on Day 1 and honesty on Day 2. It said the two sessions were designed to be comparable in demand.
Can my child predict the topic for 2027?
No. SEAB does not publish topics in advance. Practise everyday areas such as school, family, the neighbourhood, safety and values instead.
Should my child memorise model answers?
No. A memorised answer rarely fits the question asked, and it sounds rehearsed. Learn the shape of a good answer and a stock of real personal stories instead.
Are idioms needed for a high score?
No. SEAB says the oral does not need prepared or specialist vocabulary. One idiom used well helps more than several forced in.
My child freezes in the conversation. What helps most?
Daily, low-stakes Chinese conversation at home, plus the 为什么呢 drill after every answer. Practising with new questions each week builds the habit of thinking aloud.
